Probably already been addressed, but I'll bring it up again.

1. Is it possible to have moving (gif) avatars?

I have lots of exciting, moving images sitting on my hard drive, doing nothing.

2. Automatic signatures?

Instead of having to click it every time, have a toggle option in profile.

I'm just wondering if any of this is feasible, because I am a nerd and think it would be nifty. Not wanting to make more mundane work for you, Drew.

Both are possible, but on the first I think there is a forum policy against them.

No, we don't want a bunch of animated gifs littering the forum. There's far too many forums out there that allow people to have animated avatars and animated graphics in their signatures. Those kinds of forums are incredibly difficult to read. I think the simplicity of our forum helps to keep the focus more on the content of a post than all of the extra stuff screaming for attention around it.

I'm not sure on the signature thing either. IMO, signatures seem like a waste of screen space and bandwidth. I've rarely seen a useful signature in any forums anywhere. At one point in time our signature field was quite long and included automatically in every post. We quickly found that many signatures were longer than the posts they accompanied. I don't mind making the change to the page to automatically check the box when posting but before I do I'd like to see some examples of useful signatures.

croy was the addressee

But maybe I should have said: "Croy, do you mind waiting for Drew to answer the question". But than, I'm not that direct a communicator normally, and in this instance I intended to give a hint, not a directional remark.

It's an of day today; wrong wrong wrong all wrong

I remembered that was the reason given on not having gifs before, I assume their reasoning wasn't going to just change. So that helps ma meeshka out while Drew and Steph do other things.

Thanks for that. I agree with you, and I can see why those are valid reasons not to have them, I'm just bummed because I have a cache of crazy gifs that are going to waste on my harddrive. Not just novelty stuff, but some zany optical illusions. I know they're a distraction, but I figure, if you have jpegs, why not have gifs too?

Anyway, it's not a real issue, so feel free to disregard.

i hate gifs. we only allow gifs in the top banner ad spot. if i don't give gif freedom to the people who pay the bills i aint givin gif freedom to every lowlife in the joint (just kidding ma meeshka - you are clearly a highlife.)

seriously animated gifs and bad flash are the bane of the internet. excessive signatures are the bane of message boards.

Well, how about a closer tighter-cropped avatar of Steph-on-the-rocks then
