While I'm writing the new price search pages I'm thinking about new Alert System possibilities. I have a few questions:

  • Should there be alerts for used items? i.e. tell me when this item becomes available used

  • Should there be alerts for rental items? i.e. tell me when this item becomes available from a rental store

  • Should a price alert for a DVD include used items? i.e.
    tell me when this DVD is available for $10 or less would include both new and used items.

  • Should there be alerts for Bargain Watch items? i.e. tell me when this item hits the Bargain Watch list

Drew,
Love what you are doing with all the upgrades on the site. I have a suggestion/question about alerts. Is there a way to get an alert when a new dvd with "Star X" is added to the price search? I hope it doesn't already exsist, I'll feel like an ass. Or is it too difficult since there's so many names that can be involved. It's just a thought I had.

My two cents:
Used item alert: No, since these are often "one of" prices and the item will probably be sold by the time you get the alert.
Rental item alert: Maybe if this was an "in stock" alert, but that seems to be fluid as well.
Include new and used in alerts: Same as above, but if you go with "yes" on used alerts, then this one makes sense.
Bargain watch alert: Yes, but I'm not sure how useful that will be since some titles will never make it to a the bargain list.

This doesn't exist and is a very good suggestion. The primary reason I haven't added this type of alert yet it because of the way we maintain our performer data. When we get more efficient or get more help and the performer data improves we'll be able to do performer based alerts too.

Personally, I like the idea about alerts for used items. In most cases I'll be just as happy with a used DVD than a new one. Rental alerts wouldn't matter to me because I don't rent movies. Bargain watch makes some sense to me, but most of the time I'm interested in buying a movie when it hits a certain price, not when it's so much cheaper at one place than another.
