Very cool, just cancelled my Flicksmart account and I am ready to sign up. I can't wait to be able to have unlimited rentals from a high quality company like XRent. Your response times and stock availability are great.

Yeah, this is interesting. Having to wait 70 days for new releases is sorta a long time though. Also, it means that most of the titles will be rented a log of times before you get it. The good thing is, Xrent has just about everything, so you're pretty much guaranteed to get your title after that 70 days. Anyone that signs up for this give your feedback.

I would have to agree. My initial excitement was greatly reduced after learning of the 2 month waiting period.

I have no problem with waiting 10 weeks for new titles. My problem is with Premium titles being defined as those which rent for $5 or more. Almost all gay titles are expensive - to buy or to rent!

Whoa, I almost missed that little distinction. That pretty much kills this deal for anyone interested in gay porn. I'd almost go so far as to say that they don't have a gay film worth renting that wouldn't be considered a "premium title".

They should have a program for you guys that watch the gay stuff. Just make it a bit more per month and have access to any non-new release gay.

"a bit more" ???

How about a lot more?

I fight like all hell to take advantage of every sale, every discount, every coupon, every close-out I can find to keep the cost of "premium" gay titles below $35 per DVD. Considering that that is more than double the cost of most premium straight DVDs, and considering that the high price is no guarantee of quality, gays are being fucked royally and being asked to say, "Thank you. Please fuck me over again, establishment."

There are a very few studios who put every effort into keeping their product quality at stratospheric levels, justifying the high prices; however, with most studios and/or directors, quality is more accidental than planned and many plan the rip-off from the outset.

I realize that the online retailers are not solely to blame for the high cost of gay porn - they are just adding their percentage to an already over-priced product. However, I do blame many of the online retailers for their piss-poor selection of gay product and their piss-poor marketing to their gay customers.

Supposedly, gay men have a lot of disposable income. The gay men I know certainly spend a lot of their disposable income on porn. It seems to me that some online retailer could make a fortune if he seriously devoted some marketing savvy and energy to his gay clientele.

TLA Video has made an effort; however, their prices are through the roof. Adult DVD Empire, with their Gay DVD Empire division has also made an effort; however, with the exception of their most recent sale, their prices have been off the wall as well.

Other vendors may as well forget it. With my screen name and email address being what they are, one would think that online vendors of porn would get the idea that I am not interested in the straight stuff; yet, there is not a single online vendor who has not flooded my email box with heterosexual material at one time or another and most continue to do so even after I have begged them to stop.

For this kind of treatment I am supposed to pay more and thank them for the service? I think not!

Canned rant #7,382 ... time to get off my soap box and take a valium.

~ GaySatyr

P.S. Vendors take note: I own well over 400 gay porn DVDs now - most of it purchased in the last two-to-three years. At an average price of $35 to $40 each, that represents a total investment of about $15,000.00!!! How much of my business have you gotten???

I just got an email from XRentDVD extolling the virtues of their new rental program. I guess they didn't read my rant (above) or they wouldn't have had the balls to send it to me. Sometimes I think the guys running these programs don't have a clue. It's downright insulting to me to be targeted with a marketing ploy which, by design, excludes me.

Sorry, XRentDVD, but you do not pass "Go" and you do not get $200 for this one. In fact, you go straight to jail!

Or maybe -- just maybe -- it was a form email, and they didn't individually type and personally address each and every one.

I sympathize with your position, but there's no reason to feel extra insulted by the email. Surely it's not the first junk email you ever received.

ObiBong, I know it's a canned e-mailing. However, I have never rented anything from XRentDVD. And I have only purchased a very few titles from them - all of which were gay. And ages ago, I emailed them in response to one of their mass mailings requesting that if they were not going to include gay content and deals on gay titles in the mailing, to please take me off their list.

I'm not off the list and there is neither gay content nor deals on gay titles. They deserve the beating!

And, the only way I will ever purchase from them is on the very rare occasion when a title that I happen to want pops up as being $10 less expensive on their site than on any other in the ADT price search engine. I'm all for minimizing their profits!

I want to note that I have just received a very nice email from the Operating Manager of XRentDVD, explaining their position and offering some suggestions on their future direction and asking that I contribute suggestions for their consideration.

That is the kind of respect I ask. I know it isn't a perfect world and I know that the gay porn market is a relatively small percentage of the overall market. But gay customers deserve some recognition and accommodation, too.

Thank you, Mr "OM" and XRentDVD!

Try Macho DVD

It's a new site by flicksmart.com, not sure if it's fully operational or not.

MachoDVD looks interesting; however they have a long way to go - I have a better selection of gay DVDs in my own collection that they have for rent!

They have 2 Bel Ami titles - I have all currently released on DVD.
They have 3 old High Octane titles - I have them all except the most recent three.
They have 7 Bjorn titles - I have them all.

You get the idea.

Finding great new porn is a chore but someone has to do it!

It sounds like it's time for you to start your own Gay DVD rental operation. You already have the inventory part taken care of. If the market is as big as you think it is and the competition is a poor as you say it is, you could make a mint.

However, be aware that as soon as you start this business, you'll start getting a lot of complaints about how shitty your "straight" selection is.

Interseting idea. I would hope that if GaySatyr was going to start his own online venture, he'd have the sense to stick with what he knows, and leave all the straight porn to the straight folk.

I think that is one of the big problems with a lot of the online adult stores... their gay sections are more of an afterthought "Hey! Let's make some money off the gays!", and are run by straight people who really have no clue what gay folks like. (I'm not saying that's the case with XRent, but it's something that is painfully obvious at many stores).

One of the reasons I shop at GayDVDEmpire a lot (besides their free shipping) is that it is obviously run by some gay guys who are knowledgable about their product.

Anyway, I wish XRentDVD luck with their new rental policy. I'm sure it will be a bit hit with the straight crowd. I've pretty much found out that renting isn't my bag anyway... I'm more of a collector. It's so sad to have to send the movies back!

LOL! I asked for that!

In spite of my selection, there is no depth of inventory. I only have one copy of each title. To state the obvious, I'd need many copies of most of the titles in my collection in order to maintain a reasonable inventory for rental purposes.

Thank you, Mr "OM" of XRentDVD, for joining the KickBack program. That gets my attention! It costs you nothing (other than the time/expense of coordinating software with ADT) but it's an extra incentive for me to look over your stock.

I must also add that the few times I have ordered from you in the past, your service was exemplary - another big point in your favor.

Now, please consider the following suggestions:

  • broaden the selection (and depth) of titles from "premium" gay studios (including director's cut editions),
  • keep prices on par or below those at comparable online stores,
  • offer percentage-off coupons (maybe 5% for $60+, 10% for $120+ and 15% for $200+),
  • feature a different studio each month with an extra 5~10% discount on their titles,
  • add the ability to do Boolean "and" category searches (e.g., "gay" and "Latin") obviating the need for a gay "sister" site,
  • because it is impossible to stock everything, especially when the potential market is smaller, i.e., the gay market, consider offering a special order category for titles that are available but might not be economical to stock on a quantity basis,
  • create a rental program that is advantageous to your gay clientele, and
  • post a monthly newsletter page devoted to your gay clientele on your website and send your gay customers a plain-text email with a link to it (I hate HTML & multi-linked emails - too many chances for viruses & worms),
and you should see a substantial increase in gay business (including mine).
