I just bought a new Nikon D 90 and a lens kit. Love the camera but I have been getting an error message that locks up the whole thing. Cant turn it off, cant do anything but remove the battery and restart. I have read on another forum that others have had the same problem. I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about it...

I had a D80 and my friend has the D90. We have both experienced intermittent error messages or lockups. For both of us, they were truly random and once we took off and reseated the lens and (if attached) flash units, the body would go several hundred shots before another lockup.
I've read that sometimes cleaning the lens contacts can help...just use a Qtip dipped in iso alcohol.
Not sure if the D90 accepts firmware upgrades but if so you could also do a re-install of the current version and see if that helps. Once they started sticking computers into cameras, lockups were an inevitable byproduct.

Although I shoot mostly Canon, I have some Nikon's and have had similar problems with both.
As suggested, update the firmware, clean the contacts, sometimes there is a problem with a memory card.
Ultimately most of this boils down to a lens to body fit problem with the lens mounting shoe/bracket being slightly out of alignment or not locking up correctly.
Try this, turn the camera on, then see if you can rotate the lens a smidgen without depressing the release. See also if it feels "loose" in relation to the body.
If it errors during your test, you now know the problem and send it back.

Thanks for both replies. I lent the camera to my in-laws to take on a safari in Africa for the last 2 weeks. They said during the 12 days and 1300+ shots, the problem only occurred 2 times. Other than that it was great. They did change lenses alot.
I have read about adjusting the lens but not anything about updates or firmware upgrades. I will look into that.
Kind of glad to know that its not just a Nikon problem.
I will give it a good cleaning and be sure to hit the contacts on the lenses.
Thanks again for the info guys...

I went to Best Buy today...I was able to recreate the error pretty easily with the most of the Nikons there...I am betting at this point 90% of the time it is the rotational issue with the contacts or at least PURELY contact related.

Very interesting... it really is a great camera, thankfully there are forums like this to find out info to keep me from pulling out my hair and/or sending it back to Nikon and being without it for weeks on end. Thanks Proxy for thinking of me.
