| DVDwishes ComX 1060 Posts 7/04 | Posted - Feb 27 2005 : 10:20AM as I have said on many occasions, I think you keep reading between the lines in those instances, that I am a huge fan of your wife's work. however, I would, like so many others, like to see some of her films in better condition than they are now. the adult film industry is notorious for putting the best films from the Golden Age and generally all others on DVD with crappy standards. if you go and mass copy them they just get worse and you're left with an inferior product. there is a few billion dollars that flows through the adult film market every year. shouldn't that say to at least one of the company's that they should consider re-mastering these films? I think the documentary about Deep Throat may be a start, but it was done by those outside the adult industry! now ... as for your earlier comment "She's got plenty of other ways of working out her kinks." I've seen Anal Kinisters 1 , hell, I own the damn DVD. but I will say again ALL of the scenes in the film are too artistic, choreographed, and just plain passionless. the quality of the media you recorded on was a bit too see through as well I am not asking for Nina to be on the receiving end of a Gangbang Audition or anything, but her giving herself to the moment has not been seen by my eyes in quite awhile. I don't think anyone here is going to shout me down when I say that seeing Nina Hartley in a film like The Fashionistas or Eurphoria would've been a bad thing. as a writer I stretch myself far beyond what others think a "writer should do." I don't stick to one genre and call it a day. I've written about everything, except horror because real life can be horrific enough. there are just times when you have to go to the well again and say, "I can do this, it's like riding a bike." as for my comment about The Ass Destructing of Nina Hartley , a joke is a joke only until it's taken seriously. none of this is criticism on my part, just one man's way of asking, when ... I know you have a positive view of Nina's work and I can understand your desire to see her do new things with new people. She shares that desire, and so do I, but I would say it's a bit unrealistic to assume she's going to do anything wildly out of character at this point in her career. What Nina is working toward is the establishment of a new persona, suited to her age and level of skill, as a dominant GG player. That's what she does for fun and she wants more of that in her video work. If you check out her weekly Web cast at amateurcamz you'll see how she likes to work the other girlies when left to her own devices. We both think this will open a new horizon for her as a performer and will please many of her longtime fans, as well as making her some new ones. Now, as to Kinksters and all the video I shoot with Nina and others, I have my own style and not everybody likes it. I'm the one responsible for those camera angles some people here don't care for, and I can only say that the sales figures suggest I'm not entirely off the mark. Unlike most porn shooters, my wide-to-close ratio is 70-30 instead of the other way around. I like long shots where you can see the hardcore clearly, but also lots of body and scenery at the same time. My POV is that of the invisible voyeur in the room, who comes in close to look at this or that detail, but mainly stands back far enough to watch the entire act. There's plenty of endoscopic camera work out there for those who like the screen filled entirely with membrane, but I follow the advice of Bruce Seven in shooting what gives me a hard-on. Thankfully, it seems to work for lots of other viewers as well. I do find it curious that the scenes in AK1 seem passionless to you, as we cast carefully to put people together by request and give them things to do they genuinely enjoy. I'm interested, perhaps more than some other directors, in capturing the somewhat subtle mechanics of female arousal, more than I am in the hammering and slamming that passes for heat or passion in so many shows. Interestingly, the players who work for me report enjoying the sex much more than they usually do, and perhaps the resulting performances are more internal and less melodramatic than some other directors might get. My experience is that this medium has a rather idiosyncratic construction of authenticity. As to Grouper's opinion that Nina's work is all vanilla, that's kind of a funny to level at the winner of this year's AVN award for best BDSM specialty video. Nina's GG bondage series is the biggest selling genre line in the business. Hm. Odd. And no, she's not Chasey Lain. Nina's appeal has much to do with her personality. Believe it or not, some viewers actually get off on that.
