Norton or McCaffee

Just wondering since the Norton on one of my comps seems to be going nuts and I'm wondering if I should stick with Norton or switch over to McCaffee... I didn't really play around too much with the Norton home version because I found it too unwieldy, so I can't really give a fair comparison. [Link]

Back in the day my campus made us all use Norton corporate if we wanted to use their network. When I upgraded to XP, my whole system crashed. I had to take it off to get my computer to run again. Except, there is some little piece of it somewhere on my hard drive which to this day will not let me run any Norton product until I get rid of it. I tired calling Norton, and they told me it wasn't their problem. [Link]

Sure I coulda gone other routes and kept it, but I saw that as a time to kick Norton to the trash. I tried McAfee, and hated it, plus my sis-in-law uses it, annoying when I used her computer to look something up. Haven't really had a problem with either one although McAfee likes to block IRC ports. I uncheck them but every once in a while a sig update resets the block. [Link]

Click to expand This is why I don't use firewalls from McAfee or Norton. They have the mentality that home users don't know what they want or need so they'll decide what to block for them. In most cases they may be right but I prefer to make such determinations myself. [Link]

I barely even know it's running and it has more frequent updates than Norton. I'm VERY impressed with it. Impressed enough that at work our Norton subscription ended this month and I switched us over to NOD32 there as well. Trendmicro and Kapersky are two products that have intrigued me. Virus Bulletin used to have test results for various anti-virus programs listed. [Link]

They thought they were. The advice shouldn't be to use anti-virus programs as it should be not to visit crack sites, use P2P programs, open unknown emails or surf for porn without Firefox. I do tech support for PC's and I can't tell you how many problems people have with anti-virus programs clogging up their system as if it's a virus itself. Again, if you know what you're doing, you don't need one, if you don't know what you're doing, than I ask, what the hell are you doing with a PC in the first place if you don't care to learn it, which is my biggest beef with my customers. Of course common sense goes a long way and with no knowledge and/or common sense one is going to leave one's PC in peril. However not everyone has an in depth knowledge of things IT and an unwillingness to learn, for these folks and for most who don't have an excellent knowledge of IT a good collection of programs inc firewall, spyware detector/killer and Anti Virus will certainly make a big difference. Besides it isn't purely bad practice that results in infections and it is not only crack/warez and porn sites that carry viruses. I watched a movie about a Russian serial killer some time back which was based on real events. I decided to read up on the real killer and searched on Google I clicked on one of the hits it found and as soon as the page loaded it tried to infect my PC - luckily NOD32 stopped the virus.. There was no indication that this might be an unsafe site to visit. So what are we to do ? Not click on any hits a search engine finds ? If we do this we might as well never connect our PC's to the internet - that would rather dramatically reduce the enjoyment and usefulness of computers. I'm sure I won't convince you and you most certainly won't convince me - I stand by the protection I mention above being a MUST.
