I have roughly 1000 albums in my music collection and I would estimate that about half of them have no lyrics in the album package. The RIAA can suck my dick if they think I am going to pay for a CD and then turn around and pay them again to access lyrics from some pay for lyric site they are going to try to set up. [Link] |

While it may seem to some that they are just being dicks, if they think they can commercially benefit from their property (i.e. "pay them again to access lyrics from some pay for lyric site they are going to try to set up"), they should be protective of their copyrights. To the extent that they prevent others from creating "lyrics sites," that will impinge on their ability to market their products for profit, I can't say they are wrong to do so. However, I'm sure that, whatever monies they realize will be more than offset by the customer, and potential customer, ill-will that they create. Even the Walt Disney Company -- the biggest copyright assholes on the planet -- tolerates numerous fan websites, some which are for profit (profit from a site, not from any Disney material being sold), that share Disney images, music, lyrics, recipes, etc. You name it. It's great customer relations. And, it's great advertising for the products they sell. This just may be a case of the Internet creating a new market (i.e. the selling of song lyrics) that was/is not practical with traditional print media. Over the years, of course, there were fan magazines, even printed music & lyrics magazines, that "sold lyrics" as part of the magazine. But, never on a buy-the-lyrics-for-a-specified-song basis that the Internet could easily provide. [Link] |
