I've never had a problem with anyone at AVN. I truly like everyone that I have met at AVN (you included). That's my personal feeling. Professionally, and I speak for all of us when I say this, we all feel quite disrespected by not being nominated for best new company. And maybe I saw some of the questions about us not winning best new company in this thread and knowing that we weren't even nominated I might have gotten a little emotional, but c'mon- Ever since that cover, it's like AVN almost had to make a point to shaft us during the next year to not look suspiciously pro-Third Degree because of all the babies out there whining and complaining about us getting a cover. Even when we called to state our case about not being nominated, we got the blow-off. And everyone on this message board equates our existence just in the past year. I think I have the right to get a little emotional. I'm sorry that we at Third Degree care, but we do. If we didn't, we wouldn't be as successful as we are today.
But not to beat a dead horse, but we hadn't been around for months when we were given the cover. The supposed cut-off date was 2 months after our first release. And in the first 2 months, we only released 2 title per month. We still hadn't even had a release yet when Tim Connelly decided to give us the cover which was approved by Paul. Our first release "Share the Load" released on 7/26. Our second release "Don't Tell My Daddy" release 8/16. Our third release "Crack Addict" (the cover of AVN) didn't release until 8/23, over three weeks after the issue was send out. Our 4th movie "We All Scream for Ass Cream" release 9/6. Our 5th title was originally supposed to release 9/27, but due to a replication problem, it didn't actually reach distributors (not stores) until Thursday the 30th, which meant it missed the cutoff date. That is 4 releases.
Again, we are upset. And when I read posts that girls that had been around much longer than our company were nominated for best new starlet, it just makes the pain sting that much more.
For what it's worth here is my two cents on this years AVN Awards: Where it would have been nice to win something, I don't need anybody to tell me who the best new company is. That's right for all the fine smut produced by Danny Case, Pat Myne and myself apparently none was worthy an award. In most cases we were beat out by evil angel and that I will consider an award on its own. I personally was up agents Jules, Justin, Joey, and I think Christoph and Darkko as well. For AVN to say what I do should be looked at because it may be as good as what they do is more then anything I could ever ask for. I have been a viewer of evil angel products from the start. I even got to shoot for Bella on her first evil title( I think everyone remembers the cytheria scene). I know that John Stagliano only takes on people he feels are truly perverted and will try to make the best movies possible and this is the attitude I try to have when ever I shoot. For this I would like to say thank you Mr. Stagliano for many hours of viewing pleasure and for setting the bar so high. I would also like to think AVN for every nomination you gave me. Most of all I would like to think Joey Wilson for giving me the chance to make 3rd Degree a company built with the same high standards.

Hooray for Savanna Samson winning best actress! I was honestly rooting for Hillary Scott for best new starlet, yet I am impressed by ALL the nominees in that division.
Slut Puppies is a fantastic release, the one that actually introduced me to most of the ladies nominated for best new starlet this year. Way to go Mr. Jordan!
I don't want to argue your opinion about AVN and I support your thoughts about bad taste. But corruption is such a great thing. It makes live so much easier.
We got busted when we shot a scene in L.A. because we had no permit. The producers comment was: "Why are we not in Prague or Budapest? We could just have payed the cops and continued our shoot."
In any society there are stupid laws. It's good to have a way around it.
Hey there Steve, we missed you at our ADT party. We had both Tiana and Kinzie there and I can just see your smiling face trying to bury itself between those sexy tushes!!
(Emphasis added, and some editing done by yours truly.)
I can send you a copy of The Elements of Style if you promise to read it, Mike.
BTW, when I, excuse me, when me was at AVN, the window for Best New Starlet was 18 months. As far as "Best New Company," the cynic in me, excuse me, the cynic in I says that that award was probably cobbled up to placate new companies who had advertised enough to warrant an award but didn't have enough product -- or good enough product -- to actually credibly win one.
But I don't work there any more, so I can't prove it.
Tod Hunter writes: "I can send you a copy of The Elements of Style if you promise to read it, Mike."
Tod - this is an informal message board. Is there some part of that you don't understand?
But more to the point is that too bad you weren't such a meticulous copy editor while at AVN, as you fancy yourself in your post-AVN career. I remember numerous occasions when a lengthy piece of hard copy was given to you to proof, and you would return it to me in about sixty lazy seconds, with maybe one fly-by-night notation after your quite obviously superficial scan of it. Guess you couldn't wait to get back to writing that Insider column of yours which concerned itself with just about everything but porn. Tod - you were writing for an adult site. Was there some part of that you didn't understand also? Hell, even Gram wanted to pull the plug on it.
Yea whats up w/ that.. No love for third degree!!!! For crying out loud!! (not byast) i think and have always thought third degree is the best new gonzo company out there!! all around.. Its ok they know their good! They dont need plastic to show it.. the sales show it:)
Mike, copy editing's dead. Everyone knows that. If you don't believe me, ask skronk.
(But if you really want to throw a dart, you might point out that Mr. Hunter doesn't even know how to format his aviator so it links to his site.)
This thread is my favorite this week.

I don't think many people take the AVN Awards seriously. To be taken seriously, you need to be accountable and transparent. Accountable and transparent aren't exactly words that come to mind when you think of AVN.
congratulations to all the winners. i was one of the first persons to hug Audrey hollander and congratulate her when she won Performer of the year.
i m really happy for her. i feel a bit dissapointed though, that after 3 years of hard work in this business, doing everything from High-end features to extreme harcore gonzo, after over 300 scenes where i ve always tried to give my best, i haven t won a single award.
oh well, i m probably not good enough.
but in the end, i find my awards in the look directors give me after my scenes. and the one of my banker.

Melissa, don't worry about it. If I were you, I wouldn't care what a few people (who do the voting) think. As long as you're happy doing what you're doing, that's what counts. Plus, you have a lot of fans that love you.

I agree with you. Its nothing against either Audrey or McKenzie, both of whom are stunning. It just seemed odd that they won, because neither did alot of scenes last year.

That is the funniest summation of Sunny Lane ever.
"That is the funniest summation of Sunny Lane ever."
Thanks. I first thought of the comparison when Fayner wrote something on LukeFord about a Sunny Lane business card being found in the condom jar at AIM. Of course, I'm just teasing her. She seems really nice, and has one of the best hip shakes in cowgirl I've ever seen.

That's an error that should be corrected next year. You're one of the best performers out there and everyone knows that. You never disappoint, Melissa.

Accountable and transparent? arthur?
HillaryScott said: “I did an anal scene for Redlight and managed to shit on the top three guys in the industry, Michael, Manual and Erik! Of course it made the BTS and it was even mentioned in the AVN review of the movie. Now that's some shit to be proud of!”
I understand that this is an informal message board. I also understand the rules of English grammar. This makes me one up on you. I have offered to level the playing field by sending you a copy of The Elements of Style , which will help if you read it.
And as far as denigrating my abilities as a copy editor -- I had this dimwit above me who would overrule most of my changes, so as time went on I saved my changes for egregious lapses of fact like calling Boris Yeltsin the President of the U.S. or calling Jenna Jameson a contract girl at Sin City.
If Gram wanted to pull the plug on my Insider column, he never told me that. Not that I would have minded. It was a pain in the ass as much as it was a pleasure. Too bad he got fired for insufficient devotion to pornography before it ever got to that point.
You may find it hard to believe, but there is more to life than porn. My life, at least. There's more to my column, and there's more to my worldview. Your worldview seems to stop at the border between Chatsworth and Canoga Park, and that's okay. You are far more immersed in porn than I am, and that's okay too.
Your award is one that keeps on giving: the poise and intelligence and lurking depravity you bring to a job most girls won't keep for more than 6 months.

I didn't even recognize Melissa as a brunette. I had the Hustler Centerfolds 4 for her to sign but was looking for a blonde as she is blonde in it. Had to show her. I think the AVN's are like others said just a typical awards show. Doesn't make any inroads for anyone to do better or not. Just a self promotional thing for AVN and the industry. The girls know they have a fan base who will stuck with them. Like Hillary and Brittney they know they got fans and get new ones each year. Add me to that list.
C'mon folks, everyone has their own opinion as to who should have won (if it wasn't their top pick). By bringing up "should-a-wons" (in your opinion) only reveals that you missed the winner. It isn't a horse race! There is no win-place-show; only win.
I always felt that it was enough of an honor to be nominated and that a win is just icing on the cake. Most sensible people have expressed a similar feeling.
For those who didn't make the cut to be nominated (except for newbie awards)...you now have a little over 8 months remaining to prove yourself nom-worthy. Get workin' at it!
Recognition is always nice, but it shouldn't be your only motivation to do what you do. I am simply an asswhore living out my sexual fantasies on camera and paying my rent all at the same time. If someone feels the need to give me an award based on my sexual adventures, then great.
The nomination for Best New Starlet was a shock and to even be considered by most as the favorite to have won is very flattering. It was cool to win 2 awards for best oral and best group sex scene.
I would like to say thank you to my supportive fans and to AVN for giving me the ability to say that I am... an award winning cocksucker!
Keep making those nasty ass-fucking scenes, Hillary! Maybe next year you'll get a best ATM scene so it'll sit next to your best cocksucker scene to match. :)
Aren't you directing another Anal Princess Diaries?

I'm delighted that Katja has found a new excuse to keep being as filthy as she wants to be on screen -- But I can't help wondering just how many directors are going to be using this line on just how many new girls over the next twelve months, and how many of those gullible young things are going to fall for it? (Lots, I hope - lots and lots and lots...)
I’m glad that Hillary Scott is appreciative of her award, for she and Alicia Alighatti were amazing sexual performers. As was Penny Flame in Darkside. For those who were concerned that Red Light District Films wasn’t going to have top-notch sex scenes, I feel the AVN awards at least shows that we kept it up (bad pun, but what the hell). Winning a bunch of sex scenes in a sex film at least shows we accomplished what we set out to do. As for the other categories, I found it strange that the winning director would actually get up in front of the industry and say that the cinematography and editing of his film, which just won in both those categories, was shit. I wonder how that makes those who voted for them feel. Especially when it’s seconded by posters on this site. Let alone those who worked on the film. I do thank AVN for the 5 awards Darkside did win, more important than they appear at first glance. We are in the sex entertainment industry, and whatever gloss and polish we as directors apply, the end result should always be good, solid sexual performance and entertainment.
Hey James, I thought Darkside was real good, one of only a few feature type films I watched last year. Penny, Hillary, and co. made for some great sex. I was so glad Hillary won those AVN's and I suspect this year she'll make it hard for AVN to ignore her.
