I'm looking for some opinions on what exactly constitutes Point of View (POV).
In my circle, there has been some debate as of late. Some saying that POV, as a rule, is specifically shot from a person's point of view who is actually engaging in the sexual activity going on in the scene.
On the other hand, there's another group who feel that POV also, and just as commonly refers to the gonzo style of "getting right up in" the action, so to speak. This would include rather odd angles and the like, as if the viewer were sticking his/her head right up between the legs, etc.
I tend more towards hte former than the latter. Seems to me that POV is a pretty specific form of gonzo. I have trouble with the second idea, because there is simply SO MUCH of that type of stuff out there that it almost kills the point of even having a sub-genre.
Whattaya Think?

From what I have seen, the former is the more prevalent, and what I think of as POV.
IMO, the whole idea of POV is to make it as real as possible to fantasize that you're the one bangin' the starlet. Therefore, I agree that POV is shot from the perspective of the person *doing* the fucking. Anything else is simply "voyeur view".
It's my understanding that P.O.V. style porn stems from the almost universal male fantasy of somehow being able to watch themselves have sex.
With the advent in the 80's and 90's of smaller, hand-held video cameras, and the agreeance of girlfriends and wives who might not be comfortable having a third person in the room filming them having sex, but were okay with their boyfriend or spouse doing it, an amateur porn genre was born.
The professionals have pretty much expanded on that basic theme.
Well I guess adherence to a strict definition would say that POV is whatever simulates what the performer would see from his own eyes as he's getting fucked or sucked. Granted, the zoom lens is an extension of the performers-eye view. Unless the performer's eyes have Superman-like vision, I don't think they would ever be able to see their own dickhead clearly enough to be able to count the pores on the glans or the number of taste buds on a girl's tongue!
The definition seems to have broadened somewhat to include the view from wherever the camera is when held by any of the performers . At least, that's how I interpret it.
Speaking as a fan, I love POV stuff - I'm a huge fan of Mike John's work (see POV Pervert #1, #2, #3 for example). I also love close-ups - like the close-ups of a tongue on a cockhead, or of a beautiful girl's face. So for me, it's pretty hard to screw up POV too badly (although it can be done, believe me!)
Yup! That would be my definition also. Or perhaps definitions by example is the best way to go:
Gonzo is what John Stagliano shoots in his Buttman series. He doesn't get involved in the action too much, but interacts with the performers (as opposed to the Voyeur series, where there is no interaction, and which can therefore not be called Gonzo)
POV is what Mike John shoots in the POV Pervert series. He is directly involved in the action all the time. A POV scene usually starts just as a Gonzo scene - chatting up the girl, as it were - but the action then progresses differently. The viewer is directly involved not as a voyeur, but as a participant. The key words are: Gonzo - Interactive POV - Participant
I really like POV scenes but they have to be done correctly to make it erotic as possible for the viewer. Rodney Moore and Mike John are the true innovators in this genre and I have many of their titles in my collection because of their outstanding work.

Well I agree with the first.... If I see ANY part of the males face, back or get a shot of the action from underneath (let's say like a sot of the pussy getting pounded, shot from underneath as the girl is getting fucked in doggy) - it's NOT POV in my opinion. A movie that puts itself off as POV will lose points in my reviews for these things. So I suggest sticking to Mike John, who does the best pound for pound POV out there. Vince V. does a nice job in his POV line as well.

I hate POV even though it sells it's just not fun to shoot.
Can you tell us more please Jewel? Do the POV camera angles mean you have to work in uncomfortable positions, or is it that having the camera so close to the action spoils the mood?
I'm a big fan of POV. I was watching RLD's Just Over 18 #3 and the hottest thing on there, IMHO, is a POV shot bj scene ...and it's one of the Extras!
I also said I liked "Perverted Pov" (in another thread) and "The Vitual Sex w/" Series. (Jill Kelly, jesse J & Nikki T are my favs)which is pretty much POV.
"POV, as a rule, is specifically shot from a person's point of view who is actually engaging in the sexual activity going on in the scene"
Mike John has shown an ability to maintain superb Pov imagery, while interjecting dialog, and controling the tempo. He often elicits jaw dropping sex acts from his performers, and entertains the viewers with a humorous wit, that comes across as effortless. Not surprisingly, his patented, 180 degree sudden turn of the camera, offers the occasional, unexpected cameo of himself, or rather his face, which consistently is thoroughly drenched with perspiration.
Though I've certainly enjoyed these upclose, lurid feats of pornographic improvisation, I'd like to see the genre branch out to introduce more indepth, one on one scenes.
As with the Handjob feature formats, where the hand performs most of the gruntwork, the female's oral fixation entertains the viewer instead, with direct statements of dirty talk, and one on one, first person POV. Maybe I missed the available mother lode of this form of pOV, but for myself it has been, surprisingly difficult to find, outside the realms of amateur.
Similiar to the opening moments of gonzo flicks, the girl addresses, teases, and tempts her viewers, only to break it off, the moment the first male arrives on scene to take over the show. He proceeds to completely disconnect her, from the audience, along with any further lewd ideas the viewer may hoped to hear. The view is suddenly shifted to "third person mode", as she invariably turns to suck his dick, which in added spite, having just arrived, still lies limp. With handjob features, the male performer ofcourse exists, but simply plays the silent dick. Though not actually billed as a Pov, they often portray the scenes in the context I'd like to see PoV's further explore.
Endless - You and I might just have been separated at birth! I'm constantly on the lookout for the kind of scene you just mentioned, where the girl maintains the connection with the viewers while the action continues.
Do yourself a favor and check out Deep Throat This #20 - It's all blowjob/cumswallow action, but there are many instances of the actress being the focus, with tons of eye-contact-with-camera, dirty talk directly to the viewers, etc. And for me, the RayVeness and Amber Simpson scenes are off-the-charts hot.
I can't believe how many times I've recommended this movie on the ADT boards since I first saw it (only a few months ago). This may be the best movie I've seen all year.
Your post has inspired me to go back through my collection to see if I could find a couple other examples
A few other movies that come close to this ideal:
Blowjob Fantasies #18 - Blowjobs only. Almost every scene is hot, with lots of eye-contact-with-camera, and it feels like the actress is interacting with the viewer at several points. Not a ton of dirty talk, but still worth a look.
A Good Source of Iron #2 - Gia Paloma's opening scene has her doing a lot of dirty talk to the viewers throughout: "I have a drinking problem", etc. The dirty talk is more dispersed - she talks to the cameraman, and the guys who are supplying all the cum that gets shot into that oversize martini glass - but it's still pretty damn hot.
To Completion #3 - Some glimpses of what we're looking for, particularly in the Sunrise Adams and Misty Mendez scenes
Yes, both 16 and 20 were superb releases, and I do recall 20 as having more direct focus on the viewer PoV.
Thanks Cumwhipper or the suggestions! Will definitely check these out, if I havent already. Actually, I really haven't seen anything to date, that truly focuses on the potential of this approach, but hell, if its close?
Thats potential enough!

Well when you do POV it's like you are fucking a piece of equipment instead of the guy it's just not as fun and you cannot fuck so hard or the camera will bounce all over so it's pretty lame.
Well, the topic asked for opinions, so here's mine.
Cumwhipper, I'm with ya on some aspects of POV, but not on the most important one.
First off, I LOVED Rodney Moore's work with regards to POV 5 to 10 years ago, especially as it pertains to doggy style fucking. That shot, from the guy's perspective, of the girl's ass and as much of her body, including the back of her head, as he can fit in frame, is one of the best in porn. Most guys love that view. TO my knowledge Rodney was the first to use that perspective consistently in his movies and it was always great.
Second, anytime a girl is talking dirty in a movie is usually a good thing. I like the setups when the girl is talking to the camera\viewers about what she's gonna do, and how nasty she's gonna get and how she can't wait for this guy to cum all over her face and in her mouth. I'm still down with ya on this.
Here's where I depart.
Once the action starts, I am not big on the girl interacting with the camera. Or the guy talking to the camera either for that matter. It just kills my wood. Even with blowjobs. Especially with blowjobs, which is the primary employment of POV. I like them to lose themselves in what they are doing and pay all the attention to each other. I don't mind the POV shot, but I just don't like the girl looking at or playing to the camera, and I hate the girl talking to the camera in the middle of the action.
"Do you like the way I'm sucking his cock?! Don't you wish it was your cock?!" I find this annoying during the action. I don't mind if she talks to him, (her partner), but I don't want her talking to me. And I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't like when she has a dick in her mouth, and she's making a conscious effort to look at a camera. In POV or in any other aspect.

Agreed. This shot is just perfect because it gives a great view of the girl's ass while being fucked.
People seem to forget that Rodney Moore was the real pioneer in POV. Mike John and others are just following his lead.
I mostly agree here. I love BJ flicks and esp. POV blowjobs. But when a camera angle is not-POV or "pseudo" POV, I'd rather the girl stare at her parter and not at me. I also find "chatter" for the camera annoying but only if its NOT in POV. See, if its in POV -- its to "me",and the experience is happening to me. Otherwise, its kinda of a subtle admission that "I'm just a porn actress doing this staged scene for you".I enjoy eye contact of any kind. But prefer it to happen in POV/ psuedo-POV angles.
You're considering directing? For which studio? Got any particular style in mind? I just loved your scene with Brian Surewood in Pussy Whipped, and I'd really like to see you do more scenes like that.
Yeah, the sex in POV scenes sucks, but I still have my best sex in private, so who cares! In movies it's more about experiences & fun when it comes to sex.
@Kperv I have my own label but I will probably distribute it through a different label as well. What style? Nothing you would expect. Just be patient. It's too soon to talk about it anyway.
Has anyone seen "Swallow Me Pov" from Devil's film? is it like Mike John's Pov movies, Camera is 100% first person? Who is Pov cameraman?
I have seen 2 other Devil's film POV reviews, and those doesn't help much. Anal P.O.V. 3 (Tristan Seagal) not 100% 1st person, some 3rd person camera angles also. Asian POV 2 (Jon Dough) is more or fully 1st person a.k.a POV.

I have seen "Swallow Me POV". While its not totally 100% POV there are plenty of lingering shots that are "true" POV. Good oral and cowgirl footage especially. NOt sure who the camera man is, but he also does "Latin POV #3" which I can highly recommend as well.
yeah "Swallow Me POV", most of it is first person, but there are departures. From memory all of the pop shots are first person which is how they should be in POV movies unlike the Avena Lee scene in ASIAN POV ... i was so very disappointed when the cumshot was not shot in first person...
but to have my 2 cents, POV should definately always be in first person and no other angles...... it's the only way POV should be. When it goes into other angles, it kinda breaks the rhythm of scene... one minute you feel like you are there actually being with the performer, the next you're the "other" guy in the room...
and i reckon there should be better transition shots, especially not cutting from position to position... e.g. seeing the guy pull out and penentrate... just provides a better flow for the scene. even if they cut from the action to the pull out and penetration.
