I'll research this more thoroughly tomorrow, but off the top of my head, isn't "human papilloma virus" just the virus that causes plain ol' warts? You know, the type that you get if you scrape your knuckles working on a car and the cut gets jammed full of dirty motor oil?

If I'm remembering correctly, and that's what "human papilloma virus" really is, then we can just write this off as "Duh".

It's been long established that any cellular abnormality has the potential to become cancerous (warts, moles, freckles, etc...) So, obviously, contracting the "wart virus" increases your chances of having cancer. So does being a redhead. Or having freckles.

This study needs to be filed under "Yeah, we already knew that".

In essence, all they're saying is that inserting genitals into your mouth that have warts on them make you more like than before to develop warts. If that happens, you're now more likely than before to develop cancer.

They leave out an important point. HOW FUCKING MUCH MORE LIKELY am I to develop these probelms if I engage in these activities? (Let's be honest, lots of people get lung cancer just from breathing the fumes while they drive to work. It doesn't happen enought to make me think about quitting my job.)

There are about 100 different types of HPV. One kind leads to genital warts, the most common STD in America. There are plenty of types that are considered low risk i.e not likely to cause any cellular changes. But having certain strains of HPV causes a very large increase of the risk of cervical cancer in women. If you have a certain strain and someone performs oral sex on you, yeah, I could see that increasing the chance of their contracting oral cancer. But like the study suggests, it's unlikely to do it unaided by the effects of other carcinogens like cigarettes. This isn't putting me off blowjobs. Smoking, maybe.
