If the title has been rated R18 and possibly cut will it have the R18 stamped on the artwork/disc?
I have yet to come across one that does as I buy all of mine through mail order from the US on the net, never been to a porn dealer before. Also I'm in the UK.
Hi Louisa - I'm not sure about your first question but if a title has received an R18 classification (and I believe that this only happens to films classified in the UK by the BBFC) I would have thought that it will always have the R18 symbol stamped on the disc and artwork regardless of whether there have been any cuts made or not. The reason why you have probably not come across any discs or artwork marked with the R18 symbol is because it sounds like you have never bought any porn from a sex shop in the UK (this is where 'R18' films are sold). Films that might well be of an 'R18' standard will not be marked as such if they are bought in the US or Europe because the R18 classification is purely for UK-releases. You might find two copies of what looks to be exactly the same film - one in a UK sex shop, the other in an American sex shop - they might have exactly the same content, but only the one that is sold in UK sex shops will have the R18 symbol marked on the disc/artwork. Hope this answers your question!
With regard to the second issue which you raised about the statement on the BBFC website that 'R18 films may not be supplied by mail order' : here the BBFC are talking about the situation that exists in the UK that officially you cannot supply R18 sex films by mail-order if you are based in the UK. As Sir Wankalot has himself commented recently, if you are based in the UK and you supply R18/any porn to another person in the UK - and you thereby attract the attention of the police/trading standards etc -you can find yourself in hot water (fines/possible threat of prison according to what Sir W said). What the BBFC is saying does not affect you as a buyer buying from the US. As long as the material that you buy from the US falls within the BBFC guidelines then you are doing nothing wrong. The situation becomes more technical when you order material from European suppliers that might contain action that is deemed 'obscene' and falls outside the BBFC guidelines (eg. pissing/fisting/bestiality). If you order this type of material then customs do have the ability to either seize or let through such material. There has been recent discussion in this thread about what might and what might not be seized. Ultimately it would probably boil down to whether you were lucky on the day or not. Anything involving animals or under-18s and intercepted would I think almost certainly be seized by Customs and would also probably result in a search of your home by Customs/court action.

Trading obscene material in the UK would be illegal (obscene publications act). Selling anything that doesn't have a BBFC certificate would be illegal (video recordings act). Trading i guess would be OK but im not sure becuase it is for gain.
All R18 classifies material which is to be sold in a licensed sexshop has to have the R18 logo on the cover (example), if there is a R18 version and a non R18 version (sold abroad) there will be 2 different covers. If the R18 is the only version, usually there is only one version of the cover, with the R18 logo on it. Selling a non-classified movie (whether it is a Disney or porn) is illegal in the UK, even if you do it as a private person. 'Supplying with intent to gain' is what is the crux here. Giving a non-classified movie to a friend is legal, since you don't make money of it. Trading a R18 movie on a forum and then mailing it to the guy who buys it, is also technically illegal, since the only legal way to trade R18 movies in the UK is when the buyer goes to the premises of a licensed sexshop, buys the movie and takes it home. It is not even allowed for a licensed sexshop to mail the movie to the customer after he has come to the shop in person and paid for it! So to answer Louisa's question, trading with fellow pornlovers is technically illegal, but the chances are very slim to get prosecuted for it, unless you are trading high volumes. Any more questions?
