Possibly I'm insulated, in that our family has one computer and I control it. My kids don't own any of the portable technology, and can't afford to buy it themselves because they don't work (both are 15). It's certainly possible (indeed, likely) that they've seen pornographic material elsewhere, or pilfered it from me despite my best efforts to secure it. But I know they don't keep it in their rooms or their backpacks, because I don't believe in privacy rights for teenagers. I believe in random searches.

Anyway, I'm just not sure that kids are getting the choking game idea from porn. Hell, I played that game when I was a kid, except we were "smart" and just held our breath until we fainted. God, kids are stupid.

Then again, when I was 12, my consumption of Penthouse and Club magazines did very little to discourage me from blowing things up with firecrackers and gasoline or playing "Vietnam" (running through the woods while another kid tried to shoot you with a BB rifle and/or threw lit firecrackers at you ... somehow, no one ever got their eye put out, but I did accidentally "napalm" my hand once. That hurt! I'm sure my parents would have been much happier to think I was just jerking off to gauzy portfolios of the Pet of the Month, circa 1972).

In terms of seeing actual hardcore, I don't think it traumatizes or deranges 17 year olds, either.

Again, I don't think it should be legal to give it to them, but I think there are far greater societal ills afflicting our youth -- you only have to look at a fast-food ad -- or an episode of THE APPRENTICE -- to see where the real harmful brainwashing is coming from.

For me, the problem is, as I say, the absolute littering of the net with landmines of super hardcore porn in the form of free sections, typo-friendly addresses, as well as pop-ups & adware. Not to mention TGPs of gangbangs, etc. It really is the modern equivalent of standing in the center of town & shoving it into people's faces. The hard truth is that the new technology needs appropriate checks & balances, because "public space" has been redefined in the cyber era. I'm sure that my old friend Mark Kernes & other First-Amendment waving pornographers would have my head over this, but any society as a whole does owe a certain amount of protection & nurturing to its children -- while it's certainly the primary job of parents, that does not wash the rest of our hands from being good citizens & if not actively helping to raise healthy, happy subsequent generations, at least not so unhesitatingly & cavalierly putting them in potential harm's way for the sake of a buck.

There is no rationalization for that, Constitutional, intellectual or otherwise.
