I understand many dvd players and tv's in the US will have problems with the PAL format. But what about US DVD-ROM's/writers?

Should there be any compatabilty issues here regarding format? I have a friend in the US struggling to play my dvd. It's also region free.

If it is region free disc there should be no problem at all. American DVD-ROMs can read NTSC or PAL and computer moniters here can display either. In fact when I first started making VCDs I screwed up the first several by not noticing that I was making them in PAL format.

If your friend is running Windows the standard player that came with it will play PAL discs with no problems.

Careful if your friend switches between PAL and US Region 1 formats. In my old Windows 98 system after so many switches back and forth it was actually programed to make the final switch the permanent one so the system would no longer read the other format.

Damn, in Windows XP you can switch formats all you want, it's regional codes that you have limited ability to switch before it's permanant.

well I think lee carver should google hack firmware if you have a drive with locked region. Mods delete this if this is not allowed but I am not posting step by step so I figure this isn't copying protection but maybe it is.????

There's plenty of software available for region code switching, without attempting a risky firmware upgrade. Remote Selector will switch region codes automatically, even if the drive is region locked. Best of all, it's free!
