dedewhale Member USA 7 Posts 8/03	Posted - May 1 2004 : 1:31PM I bought some DVD's that I just found out are in PAL format, I am located in the US. I do not have a dvd player that can play this format...where can I get one? I would prefer one for my normal TV... can I buy one in the stores ? but if I cant... can any dvd-rom (i do not have one yet) for my pc play them (thought i heard that)? any help would be appreciated [Link]

Most of which can be bought in stores. They should play fine in your DVD-ROM provided they're Region 0. If not, you'll be prompted to change your drive's region. Which can only be done about 5 times. Click to expand Be careful with "hackable" players. Unless they can convert PAL to NTSC, the fact that they don't do region checking, really doesn't help people in the US. Back when I bought my PAL/NTSC player, Sampo was pretty much the brand to go with. However, they no longer seem to be available. Over at the AV Science Forum, the Momitsu V880 seems to be the hot PAL/NTSC DVD player. Not only does it do PAL/NTSC conversion, it will also upconvert DVD's to 720p or 1080i if using the DVI connection. It is currently selling for $249. Another option is the Maxent MX-RS200 DVD+R/+RW recorder which is built by Sampo. Buy.com is currently selling this for $279. [Link]

The exception that comes to mind is Colmax, who codes all of their stuff for region 2. Of the two players that I mentioned above, the Momitsu is easily converted to multi-region after upgrading the firmware (available on manufacturers website). The instructions are at the site linked to by Harendotes. Historically, Sampo players have been easily region-hackable. So I would be surprised if the Maxent isn't also. However, The Sampo Zone website doesn't have any information on how to do this for this player. [Link]

Most (all?) of their models can be modified to handle any region code as well as handling any region code as if it were the "0" region code. Plus, Sampo models handle PAL-to-NTSC and/or NTSC-to-PAL conversions automatically as well as outputting their signals to either PAL or NTSC televisions. dedewhale Member USA 7 Posts 8/03	Posted - May 2 2004 : 10:49AM thanks for the help, really helpful info...$250 + for a dvd player seems like a lot of money to throw down at the point...I saw a phillips dvd recorder in the store that look cool but that too was almost $300, so I guess I will just buy a cheap $59.00 dvd-rom for my pc instead. Click to expand It appears that all of the Sampo branded DVD players have been discontinued. It appears that a couple of stores still have the DVE-612 or the DVE-662 available.
