As "Penny Flame," Jennie Ketchum gave me--gave us--a lot of memories. She always had a certain liveliness and joy in her eyes, and she certainly gave off a sense of joie de vivre. I have been reading her blog on and off for some time now. She mentioned earlier this year that her mother is an alcoholic, and that she does not have the best of relationships with her. She also alluded to the very problems she is talking about these days. I am saddened that she has been living with such pain and in such loneliness for so long. No one deserves to have to live like that. I have a high degree of respect for adult performers because they take great risks to keep us entertained. We have to remember that they are human just like the rest of us, that they bleed and hurt and cry just like the rest of us. Sarah Blake had this YouTube video a while back stating that "Pornstars are not aliens." It is very sad that she had to point this out to people. I do not begrudge Jennie Ketchum her right to do something else. And, as far as I am concerned, how she goes about her recovery is her business. It will be difficult enough without a ton and a half of Monday morning quarterbackers questioning her every move. I wish her all the best, and I hope that she does find the happiness that she deserves. I have every confidence that she will.
It's Penny's wit and intelligence that made me a fan. As long as she keeps writing her blog, I'm a happy camper. I'm glad that she's working on correcting things because it was very evident that she was spinning a wee bit out of control.
Well you are wrong. Read a few of her blogs and tell me this woman isn't serious. Penny, as well as Jennie, is very intelligent and talented in other ways than sex. Cynicism is all well and good, but it needs to have a basis in reality.
"Doctor" Drew is the real "user", trying to make a buck off other peoples misery. The righteous son of a bitch has the nerve to tell girls like Penny and Mary Carey that they shouldn't be doing porn, shames them into quitting, and tries to make a direct correlation between porn and their addictions. It's an insult to everyone in the biz. He doesn't want these girls in front of the camera shooting porn, but he doesn't have a problem filming their lowest moments of recovery and showing that to the world. What a hypocrite! No real "Doctor" would even consider "using" his patients in such a way. The guy is a scumbag. As far as Penny goes...I always liked her and wish her the best in or out of the biz.
I think some of you are letting your feelings about defending porn blur your analysis of Dr. Drew. I watched Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, and if you don't think that Mary Carey is better off out of porn, you are crazy. She has a suitcase pimp boyfriend who doesn't give a shit about her and makes sure she keeps using, and then there is the business about her mother. When she was doing her ballet dancing during that show, you could see how happy she was. I'm not saying all women in porn are addicted or that they should be "rescued", but Mary is one of them. I've seen Dr. Drew on Loveline, Rehab, Sober House, and many other shows, and I have never gotten the vibe that he is anything but concerned for the people he treats. And he is no Moral Majority type, as some are painting him. Ask the people he has treated and see if any of them agree that he "used" them or didn't want what was best for them. He has been an addiction medicine specialist for far longer than he has had these shows, so I think his dedication is pretty genuine. Just because someone might not agree with you on the adult industry doesn't make them a bad person with nefarious intentions. I don't deny that he's got the credentials. I just see him as a "Doctor", much in the same way I see Gloria Allred as a "Lawyer" and Al Sharpton as a "Reverand". People who are more interested in their own celebrity and getting paid than truely helping someone. And you can throw "Doctor" Phil in there with them. You gotta agree that guys a pile...lol.
Well, since you don't know him, I"m going to take your opinion for what it's worth.

Have you taken the trouble read what Penny has to about why she stopped doing porn as well as why she stopped abusing alcohol and drugs? You certainly have no clue about what she said about being a sex addict. Do you think so little of her intelligence that she has taken the path she has taken because Dr. Drew is exerting some sort of mind control over her? May I suggest you cease your stupid drivel long enough to read, especially her first couple of blogs at www.becomingjenny.com, and see what she has to say about intimacy. Educate yourself and stop being an ass.
^ I didn't say anything about Penny's intelligence. I believe I said "I like her and wish her the best". If you took the time to read my post, it was really more of a commentary on Dr. Drew than Penny. Before you spout off again, get your facts straight, take a deep breath and think it through :) I'm sure you'll have a response where you come up with something clever like calling me an ass, but I'm done with it. Knock yourself out ;) [mod edit: quote removed] Edited by - killbillvol69 on 7/4/2009 12:55:50 PM
Wow, I can't believe that Penny is gone. I liked her. I can only say I wish her luck on her path chosen and hope that it is a path chosen for herself. There are a lot of people that tell us what we do is wrong in there eyes. Change can only be brought from with in and wisdom can only be learned not taught. I hope this is a choice for her and not to be a statistic because if we could all be smart/sober/kind/calm/better people from a book we would live in a perfect world, for which we do not!
I don't know if she is back in porn or not, but it won't surprise if it happens. You could tell she would be a tough nut to crack. She needs prolonged treatment for her addiction (not to porn), but she wasn't alone. Almost all of those people on that show are probably going to relapse. It was Andy Dick's 10th time in rehab. That's what some people don't like about the show. They think it doesn't show rehab for how it really is. The people are getting paid to be on the show and in rehab. They are probably right, but I think it can serve as a cautionary tale. Maybe some kid who looks up to one of those celebs will see how messed up their lives are and not become an addict.
I believe in Jennie, and what she is doing. I am very proud of her as I am sure others are as well. I really do believe that she is done with performing, (not directing though) and is serious about recovering and so forth. As her best friend I can say I see no relapse in Jennie's future.
Of course, people are getting paid, but nowhere near what you'd think. Some are in it for exposure, but some truly want to beat their addictions. Speaking of Andy Dick, say what you will, but as of the time when I'm writing you now, he has been sober for a year. That may not sound like much, but for an addict, it's huge. Now on to Jennie, let me just say that my understanding is that she was and is very serious about breaking her addiction and patterns. Some in here have said that Dr. Drew is using these people, but I can assure you that he is a very passionate and dedicated physician and when the people really want to change their habits and behaviors, he is able to help them.
I agree with you. I think people are far too cynical about such things. Dr Drew has never given me the slightest reason to think he has ulterior motives. You don't become a board certified physician in order to become famous. And I think you are right about Dick. He did look like he was one of the few that might make it without further rehab stints. He was actually on the Sober House show, so he wasn't techically doing another rehab. Some of the people came off as major assholes, although I am sure a lot of that is the addiction. That Steven Adler was one of them. He could be a nice guy, but when he was using or trying to get off the stuff, he was a first class jerk. Same with Jeff Conaway. BTW, who knew how far Amber Smith had gone? She was an actress and high-priced model and she ended up turning tricks to finance her addiction. She still looked pretty fine to me. ^I think it may just have been a joke of how Jennie was similar to "Penny" and if your name rhymed in a similar fashion, while just using some off the wall names, but I won't try to put words into harri's mouth, lol. I'm much more interested in what you put into your mouth on film, can't wait for your new scenes to come out!

Maybe if VH-1 actually had some quality programming instead of all the crap they pass off as "entertainment" Dr. Drew would garner a little more respect and not at much cynicism.
Something tells me Anime's thinking more in the terms of guys putting their foot down about having their girlfriend's preform as long as they're together when there's this whole "You knew what I was doing when we started dating" scenario that always goes along with it. Don't forget, whenever the girls usually come back its always "Oh I stopped for him." If you know what your significant other was doing when you met her and started going out, I don't know if you should be the one putting the stop to it unless she actually wants to. (Not that I want to put words in Anime Nut's mouth. LOL he'll obviously correct me if I'm mistaken.)

Has anyone else still kept on reading Jennie's (Penny's) blog? I must say I've been checking it everyday and it has been great reading. More importantly it's fantastic to hear that's she's happy in her journey and achieving goals that's she's been setting to reach. As corny as it sounds, I'd love to just go up to her, shake her hand and thank her for allowing us (the readers) to have such an interesting insight on her life. Christ Almighty, I was totally unaware of this, even after reading some sporadic comments/allusions. I wish her luck, good health, inner peace, and happiness in her life and future endeavors! [div] fu_q: Thanks for the link. I have been looking for a credible/accurate article to clue me into the situation and was about to post a request, before I found your link. [/div]
I don't know. I have to think that anyone who was really that concerned about someone's psychological well being wouldn't air all of their dirty laundry on a TV show watched by millions. Yes. I am a porn viewer and therefore, can only be considered to be at least somewhat biased in this area. But I don't let my porn viewing override everything. You may very well be right about Mary Carey being better off. There are a lot of people who just aren't right for a business like porn. Hey. If she's really happier, I think that's great. No matter how much I like someone, I wouldn't want them to stay in the business if I knew they were miserable doing it. However, these things (if in fact a person really does have serious problems) are better worked out behind closed doors. There's a reason doctors have offices with doors on them. You're not going to help anyone by doing what they're doing and even if you did, the potential to do far more damage than good is just too great. It's like doing surgery on someone in a sewer. It might work and everything might be fine but it's risky and there's no real reason to try it. I think it's possible "Dr. Drew" thinks he's helping people but I really have to question someone who is apparently a Dr who seems to have no qualms about giving advice to people in the way he's been known to do over the years.
That's the thing though. You can be concerned and still be wrong. You can be educated AND concerned and still be wrong. To me, I always did get a certain vibe from him. He conceals it very well but I always felt that there was definitely something a little off there. And now I see he's involved with this and I really wonder about him.
Do you think a person who wants what's best for you would present you on global TV as a mentally damaged person who needs professional help (even with your consent)? Regardless of whether or not he really helps those people, they will be recognizable everywhere they go as Dr. Drew's "patients". How can that really be a positive thing?
