When ready to buy, read, read, and read reviews. If combined with a few rentals that you have made and perused you should have some pretty good expectations of getting something good. Again, buy on-line, it is cheaper.

ex: I rented a Barely Legal movie for Dani Woodward and Malorie Marx and saw a scene with Cytherea in it. From then, I rented another movie with her in it and discovered Cherry Lane.

I go down to the local brick and mortar Le Sexe Shoppe. I look primarily at three things:

1.) The studio: I prefer known quantities, such as Evil Angel, Zero Tolerance, PXP, RLD, Ana/Dia, etc. That way I pretty much know what to expect, especially in terms of production value. I never really try production companies I haven't heard of, unless the DVD has a girl in it I really like, which brings me to...

2.) The girls: There are a few stars that I consider must-sees. These are my A-listers. However, if I find a movie with a couple of B-listers in it, I may choose that one over the one with the single A-lister.

3.) The guys: Yes, the guys in the movies matter to me. There are certain guys (who will remain nameless) that sorta ruin scenes for me, so I try to avoid movies with them in it, unless maybe it's only for a single scene. Off the top of my head, it's a good sign to me if some of the following are in the movie: Brandon Iron, Manuel Ferrara, Erik Everhard, and of course Rocco.

So to sum up, when I'm trying to pick out porn, it's a combination of all things listed above. I have to recognize a couple of girls in the film, it's got to be from a company I feel I can reasonably trust, and if I'm having trouble still making a decision, I'll think about which guys are in it.

Practically speaking, this results in a renting process that is peculiar in itself and which I have described elsewhere in this forum.

Balance is key. I am fortunate in that I can rent cheap. 10 titles for a whole week for 15 Euro. While picking those 10 titles, I use rules #2 and #3 to strike a balance between the trusted and unfamiliar. Even if I am unlucky and all the unfamiliar titles turn out to be stinkers, I can fall back on the titles I can almost always tell will be good. And then there are times that I get lucky, and the unfamiliar titles are good as well. If that is the case, I can look for more of the same. At the same time, I learn to avoid the stinkers.

I have seen a lot of bad porn in my quest for good porn. But after so many years of watching porn, I am pretty much confident about what I will like and what I will detest.

So, in short, there is only one rule for me: experience.

Hmmm... and variety. Without variety, I get bored, or even worse, jaded. So I like to mix things up anyway. But then, I am seldom looking for specific titles, stars, acts or fetishes.

Unlike Hollywood, porn directors are very often associated with a label (i.e., company). Thus, I end up buying videos from certain companies: Evil Angel, Red Light District, Platinum X (and formerly Extreme Associates) for gonzo/all-sex; Private and Digital Playground (and formerly Wicked) for features.

Then there is the matter of content. I don't watch too many features, but a coherent storyline is nice. It doesn't have too be super-duper plausible (heck, most of the Hollywood mainstream stuff isn't), but it does have to flow well. If I'm picking a gonzo/all-sex tape, most of these are now in genres (blowjobs/facials, gangbangs, creampies, etc.) so I can indulge in whatever fetish I fancy that day.

There is one reviewer whom I've been reading consistently over the years. I understand his personal preferences and his pet peeves (helpfully, he has stated these again and again), and he has made my porn purchasing over the past few years far less of a hit-or-miss game. Thanks Rog! You rule!

I'm getting acclimatized to some of the reviewers here. I've been burned a couple of times buying a video that someone fleetingly suggested, so I will stick with the suggestions of bonafide reviewers. Over the years in various online forums concerning various topics as well as online stores such as Amazon.com, I've found that people who took the time and consideration to write full-length, persistent reviews with correct punctuation and decent grammar provide far more useful information than the post-and-run "such-and-such movie has that kind of action" or "i liked it"/"me too" drive-by dilettantes.

Do not use the box cover art as a guideline. The better directors seem to have more honest scruples about what they put on their box covers, but you can't tell who is being honest and who isn't by looking at box cover art. Heck, as you watch mainstream Hollywood, you'll realize that movie trailers for bad films contain all of a movie's good moments. Trailers for good films only have a portion. But you can't tell a good movie from a bad one by watching the trailer.

If you do the "rent first" thing as others have suggested, you should take notes. The more effort you expend on researching and figuring out your own personal tastes, the better decisions you will ultimately make. The better you are at communicating what you are looking for, the more relevant responses you will receive.

Oh yes, I can't forget. The girls should be hot. The first time I saw Jenna Haze on the box cover of Flesh Hunter, I said, "Holy fucking shit!" To this day, if anyone says the name Jenna Haze, I think of that box cover as well as her scene in that movie and get instant wood. That's what porn should be all about.

Summary

You cannot say "recommend good stuff to me" and expect the world to be handed to you on a silver platter. Ultimately, you will need to figure out your own research/qualification procedures and/or sources. That's the "trial-and-error" part.

I have found that my attempts to write reviews have actually helped me identify what is important for me. Reviewing movies is not easy, but the benefits are two-fold: yourself and others. In case you are a rookie to pornland, first thing to do would be to find out what you like, what turns you on. Since there are so many different companies with so many different directors around and this resulting in such a big variety of directing styles, it´s safe to say you´d better start to find out, what does work out for you, and what does not work out for you.

Once you made that first step, second step would be to decide whether your main attraction is biased upon the actresses, some certain directors/companies and/or a combination of both.
How to find out? Rent, rent and rent, whatever appeals to you, when you see a boxcover. Plus, to widen your horizon, always try out something new. Maybe that´ll help to find you your favorite fetish, whatever.
Reviews might be helpful as well, but you should always keep in mind that these are often very subjective and can lead to big disappointments, like i.e. the reviewer likes certain things/scenarios you don´t like at all.

Me? I consider myself a porn-watch veteran, since it´s some 20 years ago that I watched my first porn flick. I can tell for sure that things change, i.e. many titles I used to love when they were released several years ago, nowadays no longer appeal to me in any way. Even the other way round this is sorta true. Some things I found disgusting back than, I now really love to watch.
