I'm wondering if I'm the only one whose tastes in porn seem to vary radically based on mood. As time goes on, and I explore my porn watching tendencies more and more (largely through my participation on this site), I find that now-a-days I'm actually watching less porn than I used to, but at the same time the porn I do watch hits the mark of what I want to see far more often than it used to. I have the people on this site to thank for that! I find, however, that one of the important considerations that I have to really pay attention to before I sit down to watch a movie (or a scene) is "what am I in the mood for?".
There will certainly be times when I'm in the mood for the MTV fetish stylings of Tanya Hyde, and there will be times when I'm in the mood for Joey Silvera's much more emotional and complex approach. There will be times when no other star but Taylor Rain will do, and there are times when I can't get enough of Mason's out of control take on dominance and submission. Certainly watching Andrew Blake requires me to be in a certain frame of mind, as does watching some purely beautiful girls in a private Adamo movie. Even my oft maligned "act driven" porn finds it's way into my "nothing-else-will-do" psyche now and again--where I'm looking for a specific act to be performed for me. It's often a combination of these fickle, mood driven preferences that help me to make the choice about what to watch, and by extension, what I say on this forum on any given day of the week--which of itself is certainly cause for inconsistency, and hypocritical posts that I do apologize for (can't gaurentee that it won't happen again, though. )
On the opposite side, though, I also find that if I'm NOT in the mood for something, and I watch it anyway, it can be off putting--almost to the point where I will never be able to enjoy it, merely because I didn't watch it during a period where I was actually interested in seeing it. It's very odd. Again, this dictates that I pay careful attention to what I want to watch, and if nothing I have available will fit the bill, it's better not to watch anything at all, and just let my imagination do the job.
Is this insane? Does anyone else find that they have this same kind of experience? I think this also has something to do with why I often watch something I really like, decide to keep it, and then later decide that it's really not worth keeping afterall. This is why I have only a relatively small permenent porn collection--and also why I have a fair number of titles I haven't watched yet--some of which I've acquired months ago, but the mood to watch them hasn't yet struck me.
Am I a freak? What thoughts do you guys have on this--what is your personal experience with this. I have a feeling I might be more variety driven than most of you are and I'm wondering if I am indeed the exception rather than the rule. :)
Good morning Mike, I really enjoyed reading your post. Last week, I was talking with Jimmy D. about the same issue. Sometimes in my movies I am in the mood for the girls to be tied up, sometimes I am not. Sometimes I want toys used, sometimes I do not. As far as watching porn, sometimes I like to watch a feature with a plot driven story, really good editing and dialogue. My mood really changes alot, when it comes to what I want to watch. I might watch a bondage only movie with no sex, then be in the mood for a Brad Armstrong or Michael Raven feature. In my personal sex life, I change what I am in the mood for alot. Last night I was really getting wild with Bridgette, yet the mornig before, it was standard missionary with lots of french kissing. So chances are, there are alot of people like you or myself who have the same feelings. Skeeter Kerkove

I am very much into what you are describing.
My porn viewing lately has dropped off, as to how much and how many I watch per week.
Then I am much more careful to which disc I will pop in the machine depending upon the mood I am in. If I select the wrong genre for the mood, I find that I will pop the disc out fairly quickly and choose something else - reserving the disc I just removed for another day and another time (or the change in moods).
That's why sometimes it will be Andrew Blake or Adamo and such that will be what I want. Other times, I want the harder, nastier, gonzo type.
I know what you mean, Mike. I pretty much only watch what I'm in the mood for, on any given day. At times this is a Pierre Woodman feature, often it is one of Christoph's movies, and most of all it is Nacho's stuff. Yet, there are times I don't want to see a Nacho movie, and recently I wasn't in the mood for any of Toni Ribas' titles (which has passed).
I greatly respect the work of John Leslie and John Stagliano, yet I can only watch their movies on rare occasions. Then, when I am in the mood for them, they are the only porn that will do. On other rare occasions, I need a Shane's World type pseudo-documentary to match my mood.
And one last thing, I also agree that "not any porn will do." If I'm not in the mood for a style of movie on a particular day, then watching it won't arouse or excite me, only leave depressed feelings. You and Don are right on there.
Typically, I start thinking about a certain actress. Then I'll look through my collection of her work and decide which one I'm in the mood for.
Occasionally my search will cause me to stumble on some other actress, reminding me of a scene which will completely change my (obviously shallow) mind.
At the moment, I can't recall being so off-put by a scene that I was unable to ever find it interesting again. I can recall not being particularly interested in a scene but then, after it percolated in my brain for a while, deciding that I needed to add it to my collection after all.

I definitely know what you mean.
Starting to watch the wrong thing on the wrong day, while if I found enjoyable once, I'll probably be able to find enjoyable again; but if I start watching something that turns me off on that day, it often turns me off enough that even watching the "perfect thing" for that day afterwards won't get me into a better mood.
Interesting topic and I understand where everyone is coming from.
I usually start thinking of a certain actress and then try to find the scene that fits my mood. But if I am having a bad day or are in a bad mood when I watch a movie, it takes a while before I want to watch that movie again. This usually happens when i watch a movie real drunk or hungover, kind of ruins it for a while. Sometimes when I watch one with other people, I don't want to watch it again for a good long while.
Sometimes I need a gaping anal film, because I am feeling empty inside. Sometimes I need a plot/feature type, that way I can think a little (very little) or because I want to be entertained. Sometimes I'll watch a she-male film, well, no real reason other than I like/love it.
Since I started really watching/buying/reviewing porn, I've really started becoming more open minded. I would've never thought that in a million years that I would ever like a gay DVD, yikes, or a she-male DVD, or even double anything (penetration, anal, or vaginal). I never thought that I would ever like half the stuff that reviewing has brought me.
I love all types of porn, well, except for one "person" who I will not bother to mention, but you all know who that is.
I am oh so thankfull for the Kickbacks, here at ADT, without them I would be like minus 12 or so DVDs that I truly loved.
So to sum it all up... yes, porn and mood go hand in hand, at least with me.
*three posts today, five times editing total, damnit.

My porn consumption has decreased recently, but most of the time I rent based on mood just as I listen to music based on mood or view television or non-porn movies based on the mood I'm in. Some times Metallica hits the spot but other times I'll be craving AC/DC or Hendrix. I like horror and action movies but some times I want to see a comedy or a *cough* chick flick *cough*...
Same with porn. Most of the time, however, instead of a mood or style of direction I'll want to see a specific genre like facial cumshots or anal. Occasionally a specific performer (I've gone on Aurora Snow and Belladonna kicks)...
You aren't insane. In fact, I think if you aren't consuming a media based on mood or desire(/need) for something but just to consume or just "picking a list" then that probably crazier...
I am definitely watching less and less porn. And last night I was definitely in the mood to watch a porn, but nothing I owned seemed to satisfy me, and I couldnt really think fo something that would satisfy me. It doesnt seem like porn satisfies my moods anymore, im waiting for something to come along and re-energize me.
The overwhelming consensus here seems to indicate that mood plays a large part in which porns we watch - and I'm no exception. Like Hardware and Gunth, often a craving for a certain actress combined with what type of mood I'm in determines which flick I pop in the DVD player.
Sometimes I just want to be titillated and see sexy ladies posing and/or playing with eachother in some softcore scenes. When I'm feeling especially randy, I prefer something really nasty and harcore. Still, other times I want to view a porn with a decent story line. There are even times when I'm not really even in the mood to watch a skin flick that I find I'll play one just for the background noise because I'm tired of listening to the radio, or music in general. This is usually when I'm reading or working on my home biz. That can get a little distracting sometimes and I'll have to take a break , but usually I'll just chug along at whatever I was doing.
I have found that usually I choose which pornos to watch based on which type of costumes are worn, or which themes are employed in the movie, or simply which honey I'm in the mood to watch. But I doubt that I'd ever get rid of a any flicks I own because even if I didn't enjoy it first time around, or its scenes didn't cater to my mood, I reason that I'll eventually be in the mood to enjoy it. I also have many movies I haven't watched yet, but that has as much to do with the rate I've been buying lately as it does with what moods I'm in when I put one in the DVD player or VCR.
I guess what I find most interesting is not WHETHER mood effects what you watch--I think that to a certain degree that is almost a given--but HOW mood effects what you watch. I gather from the some of the responses here that some people primarily choose what to watch based on performer. I certainly do that from time to time, and I would theorize that this is how most porn gets chosen. On the other hand, as I've grown more finickey with my porn choices, I find that studio, production values, and especially director and the attitude and scenerios that director tends to bring play very large roles in that decision as well.
On that scale, though, for me personally (with a few occasional exceptions), the actual individual acts involved (i.e. anal, DP, DAP, swallowing, 2 on 1, straight to the A, cum drippers, black on white, etc) in any given scene is very low on the list of what drives my choices. Mind you, there are certainly acts I like to see, and I do find myself aroused simply because they are included, but they are not what drive me to watch a scene. On the other hand, I expect that alot of people have a slightly different priority list than I do, and the kicker is that on any given day what I'm looking for, and that order of priorities can get reordered and shifted around, and I have to choose according to those most current criteria (hence my interest in variety).
I'm afraid this is now becoming too analytical. I don't mean it to be. I also don't mean to find fault with anyone's choices (that would just be silly!). I just would like to take a step to a common ground. Are there so many threads about DP, DAP, swallowing, and other act specific questions because that is truly what most porn fans are looking for first--in combination with the right girl and the right studio? If so, I wonder why that is? Is it simply easier to equate wanton, uninhibited sex or degrading sex, or dominance-submission (or whatever meaning the specific person makes of them) with specific largely socially "deviant" acts? I know when I want to see a certain act, I certainly have a reason--it may not be easy for me to figure it out, but it's there.
Again... this is not a dig in the slightest. This is simply me trying to understand--trying to understand myself especially. I'm probably drifting off the topic... but to heck with it! I'll bring it back to this--HOW does your mood effect what you chose to watch? Granted "mood" is probably a bad word to keep using for this--but I'm lazy, and porn isn't an exact science anyway. :) Am I just rambling? (probably... when do I NOT ramble...?)
Whatever you do, please don't necessarily follow my lead, just post whatever comes to mind. I think there's some interesting discussion to be had here--ultimately fruitless though it might be.
...same here. ...although, since I'm a picky SOB I'm always in the hunt for the perfect scene with my favorite girl also. Saddly that seldon happens becouse the guy holding the camera will always find a way to ruin my mood.
I wanted to watch a porno last night, and I spent almost a half hour looking through my collection for the perfect disc. I finally gave up due to exasperation at not finding what I was in the mood for and just watched Law & Order instead! Pretty freaky, huh?
I've sort of wanted to post about a variant on this issue myself: I have to be in the mood for porn in the first place. Similar to sex itself. If not in a sexual mood, no amount of porn will get me there. In fact, it will push me away, if anything.
My interests in porn are narrowed to two specific, in-low-demand niche genres. And even then, I have to be in the mood. Then, after a long, lung-expanding pull on a bong loaded with the kindest California bud, I start thinking the right thoughts and—voila! —I'm ready to reach into The Forbidden Cabinet in which the naughty titles reside.
We are, after all, talking about endorphin-releasing responses from watching certain kinds of material. One cannot be in such a mood all the time. At least I can't.
Often times, I'll know what I want to watch (i.e. what kind of scenes, which for me is usually rough/hardcore) and find something that has that and watch it. Other times, I just like to take a movie I don't know (haven't read a review on it, don't know what it'll be like), and see where it takes me, see if it gets me in the mood to enjoy it. I think this latter phenomenon can be used as a criterion for a good film, its ability to get you hooked into it.
