Now i don't have a widescreen monitor, so i'm wondering how i can tell (other than the box), or if anyone can answer the following: ie. if i have a movie that appears widescreen, but the menu fills the full 4/3 screen, is that likely to be a anamorphic widescreen movie. Similarly, if i have a movie that appears to be widescreen, and so are all the menus, but then one of the trailers in the extras is in 4/3 format, does that mean the dvd can't be anamorphic widescreen. I guess what i am asking is: can a film be anamorphic widescreen if other parts of the disk aren't. Similarily if you have a film that has a movie made up of widescreen and 4/3 scenes, does that mean that playing on widescreen, the 4/3 scenes will appear with black lines down the side, while the rest look normal? thanks  [Link] |
Bill  All-Star Member 5334 Posts 6/00 | Posted - Mar 27 2010 : 1:09PM The easiest way to determine whether a title on a DVD is anamorphic or not is to change the aspect ratio in the DVD player's setup screen. If a title is letterboxed when the DVD player is set to 4:3 and is not letterboxed (or is less letterboxed in the case of a movie with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio), then the title is anamorphic. If the picture stays letterboxed, then the title is not anamorphic.  [Link] |

Most of the time you can tell because people look too tall or their heads look vertically stretched. But this is playing them on a 4x3 monitor with *out* telling the DVD player to add bars. As Bill said, the tip off is to change the DVD player mode from 4x3 to widescreen (or vise versa) and you'll see a change in the bars if the movie is anamorphic. But I wonder why you care. Because if you simply have a 4x3 monitor, all you have to do is tell your DVD player that you have a 4x3 display in it's setup menu. Then the DVD player will add bars as appropriate for anamorphic content, and turn them off for 4x3 content. That's the default setting on most DVD players and it "just works" for 4x3 displays.
