I think that in the near future every studio makes scenes and put them on their internetsite for download in stead of putting the stuff on dvd.
More and more DVD titles on the market allready contain scene's that previously where offered on paysites. For instance Naughty America and Reality Kings. I think that it is a positive thing that customers don't have to go to a shop or rentalstore to buy or rent a whole dvd with maybe only one scene of their interest.
The other positive thing could be that films with things like pee, poo or fisting can be distributed over the net without the risk of lawsuites.. since those movies aren't distributed by post.
On the other hand... I see alot of paysites like reality kings or naughty america making more of the same stuff every week. They become lazy in making scenes with build up or the standard routine.
Good example if this is Milf Next Door and We Live Together where every scene is a copy. Only the girls change.

With all due respect, this is utter nonsense. Yes, DVDs will be replaced by some newer medium/media in 5-10 years, but I think people will continue to want a tangible product that they own and can watch at their leisure.

Can the movies downloaded over the net compare to Blue Ray or HD DVD quality? Can they beat this or at least meet this level of quality?

The quality can't even compare to standard DVDs most of the time. It's like CD vs MP3 or even worse.

Go purchase a Aiptek HD digicam at Best Buy for about $125. It records in HD at 1024x768 right onto a memory stick. Cheap-ass unit. Now show that video on your plasma. Now compare it to any porn DVD.
Yes. Downloaded porn, properly formatted and filmed in HD, is already available. It rivals or in some cases betters traditional DVD. HD-DVD and BlueRay...nope....that trumps downloads for now.

A couple of years? As in 2 years? I very much doubt it.
But you are on to something, I did find information on the internets that said that Porn Video Sales & Rentals fell to $3.62 Billion last year from $4.28 Billion in the US. That's a steep decline from years of slowly increasing sales. And this is while Internet Porn rose to $2.84 Billion from $2.50 Billion. (But I suspect that might be a little harder to track...)
But look further down on the page, it's due to discounted product since the number of units sold went up.

They can still be brought up on charges. Ever notices that sites like ADE don't allow VOD to the states blocked from sales?

It'll take a while before people are completely at ease with the idea of getting the Films, TV and Porn over the internet.
We are getting there though Unfortunately, when it comes to TV & Films at least, the best quality stuff seems to be distributed by pirates.
I think it'll be a fairly long time yet especially as Hard Drive space, Internet speeds and caps haven't quite caught up with High Definition video sizes.

I disagree. Harddrive space is getting bigger and bigger and cheaper and cheaper. I have two 500 gig harddiscs. Plenty of space for high quality stuff.
I read there will be a 4 terrabyte harddrive in 1 year.
I also disagree on slow internetspeed. In Europe and in my country 20 MB down speed is common good nowadays.

With all respect to download sites, DVD is still a growing phenomenom within the growing phenomenom of technology in this economic world. Unless another highly acclaimed portable device surfaces that contains the popularity of DVD, I don't see DVDs leaving the porn scene any time soon.

I also have just shy of 1TB of HDD space but how many normal people have that much space to play with? Everyone I know seems to have fallen for laptops and their relatively small hard drives.
On top of that a lot of folks don’t have HTPCs or connect their PC to their TV so even if downloading stuff were simple they wouldn’t want to watch it on their PC monitor.
It's very true that many Europeans are lucky. We too have 20MB+ here in the UK but the truth is that many (probably most)Broadband connections here & likely worldwide are no where near 20mb and a great deal of those are throttled or capped.
500GB hard drives are big and 1 is probably about right for an ok DVD collection but I wouldn’t think it was big enough for HD which can't be ignored. It’ll also be a hard sell for anyone that’s lost a hard drive in the past. If they have to back it up by burning it they may see it as easier to just buy.
That’s why IMO We're still some way off people giving up the simplicity of buying a Disc compared to downloading it especially when it comes to TV & films. With Porn sure it's a fair bit more complex as it seems a lot of the stuff happens to be web exclusive and there’s definitely a convenience factor. I’d rather download porn even if it’s slightly lower quality than face the prospect of buying it in a store.
But still I have a hard time believing porn DVDs will die in 2 years but I guess we’ll see.

Dvd versus vod is not just a question of the best format for movies, it's also a question of selling porn by the scene or as whole movies. I can see why smaller companies will prefer to sell their stuff as vod scenes rather than put together movies and get them distributed in the form of dvds.
Since most porn dvds are just random collections of scenes anyway, I suspect that people's buying habits could easily change into buying single vod scenes instead.

Here's another issue. Will the Nazi states be emboldened by the death of the Adult bookstore/DVD. Because if DVD goes then so do the stores as we know them. Will the Nazi states take this as a cue to start trying to say you can't view hardcore porn over the internet in their states. They already do it in regards to satellite transmission which is unfuckingbelievable.

By the way I know some of you take these types of issues lightly but I certainly don't. Censorship in any form is a strong step towards and a huge tool of tyranny. I think we are moving that way more and more.

Oh ye of too much faith. The internet will eventually be clamped down so tight it'll make cable TV content seem liberal by comparison. Every day, another clueless soccer mom shows up somewhere online and informs the world -
"Oh mi GAWD! My keeeads R lookin' at parn!"
Give it five years and you'll be lucky if you can see bare breasts online without 6 forms of identification and a federal porn watcher's license. And it'll probably be against the law to even talk about pee or poo.

A Tangible Product - That's What People Will Still Want 5-10 Years Froms Now
This DVD Is Dead/Dying Is Utter HorseShit.
Not every porn fan has a credit card, or even bank account for shit's sake.
We already have 2 new formats that require updating your DVD player: HD and Bluse Ray-The Stuff Is Expensive Too, to say nothing concerning the cost of a modest sized HD TV all of which is required to play these new formats - no HD/Blue Ray DVDs are not compatible with regular DVD Players
Remember, DVD Movies became available at retail outlets in 1994. Nobody really switched over untill 1999.
DVDs have a good 10 years ahead of them before they are obsolete.
Shit, even a el cheapo $399.00 computer with shitty streaming is unaffordable for the vast majority of Porn Buyers
But $14.99 will buy anyone a brand new Magnavox DVD player
$49.99 will buy an inexpensive Brand New Portable DVD PLayer (Extremely Popular With Porn Buyers.)
DVD ain't goin' no where, even if sales are way down since the explosion in 1999.

The dvd format first hit retail in Japan in 1996. It came to the states in the spring of 1997.

Tintintin has some logic but it certainly won't be 2 years. Over the past five years DVD sales have dropped dramatically (complete a search plenty of studies) and this has coincided with an increase in internet speeds, based on this evidence the market for DVDs will shrink further but continue to exist and the downloads which will continue to improve will rise. Several factors aid in this particularly in the adult industry.
1. Downloading is anonymous to a large extent, adult material can be embarrassing
2. Adult DVDs are basement quality and cant compare to commercially produced DVDs, eg. budgets much higher, cameras used and technology. So the quality gap is much less between a porn DVD and a internet download when compared to a commercially produced DVD and a download. Porn will not have a say in the new "format war" as porn will continue to produce a lower quality range.
3. Price, the cost of a typical DVD is around $20-$30. You can gain access to a site and have multiple links and potentially download multiple DVDs for the same cost.

Are we talking about DVDs as a medium or as a product? I can see DVDs lasting for a long time as a data medium, but movies being sold as DVDs may have a shorter lifespan.
I don't see why hard drive space would be much of an issue. Would most people really want to keep all of their porn movies on a hard drive? I would download and then burn to DVD, if it could be done legally. I would prefer to download the scenes I want from am iTunes-like store, pay for them on an individual basis, and periodically burn collections to a DVD.
I think that may be the way the market is headed. It's too bad porn still has such a stigma, as Apple would otherwise be a logical company to implement this type of system.

Isn't the whole point of downloading to eliminate the DVD? If you're just gonna buy the movie and burn it to a DVD, why not simply buy the product and cut out the extra steps? The only reason people download is because they're cheap and lazy. Burning to a DVD is extra work. Not a lot but it is extra work.
Probably the biggest single reason hard drive space has increased so dramatically is people downloading movies, music and games. Otherwise, almost nobody would need 500 gigs of storage space. Which may sound like a lot but you could fill it up pretty easily if you downloaded movies all the time.

I can't speak for everyone, but that wouldn't be the whole point for me. I think it is also reduced costs - the companies don't have to manufacture the DVDs, so they can sell downloaded content more cheaply ... in the same way that downloaded music is cheaper than buying the CD. Personally, I would prefer an a la carte scene menu and then burn the DVDs on my own.
But I admit I may be a bit of a dinosaur. Hell, I still have a soft spot for Golden Age porn.

You nailed it, dude. I feel that the removal of stores or the ability to purchase material at any regular site or any regular availability will mean that the ThoughtPolice will then go after the "internets".
I am afraid our ability to have free speech and access will be hindered by the Gov....Monitors that are even watching what we purchase on line now. You know they can then regulate what we can access on line in the future if they want to and make the material and you.....disappear.

It only costs a buck or two to produce the CDs and DVDs that are made. The cost is low...but they make a killing on each sale because it is so cheap to produce. The CD market since the late 80s have ripped us off by still pricing them so high....with a low cost to produce.

I totally agree, but that still doesn't rule out the possibility that mass-marketed, legal, downloadable porn along the lines of an iTunes model could lead to lower prices for consumers. It did with music. However, with music, that lowered price has come with lower quality (compressed) files, which don't interest me personally. That's why I still buy CDs, although I do it judiciously because of the rip-off prices.
I feel the same way about porn. I don't think I'd buy downloadable porn unless it was DVD quality, or very nearly so. So that may be a barrier, given that not everyone has sufficient bandwidth for that.
It would be interesting to hear from some porn studio personnel on this thread - is this an economically viable model? Would it be more or less of a headache than the current system?
