Porn is currently behind the curve of fashion & style. It seems most of the models are glammed up for a kind of 1990's hotness: big eyelashes, lots of make-up, long shiny big blonde hair. But the stylish mainstream women of today are more hipster-ish. Shorter hairdos with more color. More elaborate tatts. Retro clothing. Lingerie that doesn't look like mom's.
More pornographers need to create looks like this:
sgquad.jpg
and fewer like this:

I think all of these women are beautiful. But I think if you want to appeal to younger dudes, you have to stay hip. That means more performers with piercings and sleeves. Women dressed up to look more like rockstars rather than rockstar groupies.
Less LA, more Williamsburg
Less Celine Dion, more Beth Ditto
Less Bachelor contestant, more Rock of Love contestant.
Less Classic Rock, more Rap Metal
Less Playboy, more SuicideGirl
Yall are doing good on keeping up with the whole "big booty" craze. Good job. Now let's think about clothing and hair and jewelry. I know that's more of a "girly" thing and the male porn directors don't analyze that too much, but it makes a difference to both male and female consumers.

Agree. But i guess alot of people grow up on the 1990's look and got used to it and still want it. So there is still a market for it.

I personally love the Suicide Girls look, but it's not for everyone.
I AM tired of seeing early 90s hair in today's porn though. I could go for seeing more Maxim-type style in porn.

Perhaps it's the 'baby boom generation' in their 40's, 50's, and 60's who are the main consumers of porn. And it's mostly them the porn industry needs to please in order to make money.
Fashion preferences of older guys probably are not the same as the preferences of younger guys. And it all depends on whom the porn companies are trying to appeal to.

I'll go out on a limb:
I suspect that some porn viewers have been jacking off to porn for so long, that their minds only equate sexual pleasure and orgasm with the old porn-style (big eyelashes, lots of make-up, fishnet stockings, stiletto shoes, etc.)
I suspect that many porn viewers don't go out much. They don't fantasize about women that they meet in real life. They're jacking off, thinking about the porn star with wild hair, big shoes, glittery skirts and huge implants.
After many years, the human mind has trouble imagining sex any other way.
That's my theory.

Don't know if I agree completely Frog...if what you say is true, why isn't porn fashion stuck in the 70s or 80s? It's definitely stuck in the 90's, I think.

I'll agree with you that porn directors are not trying hard enough with their art direction. The 2000's typical porn fashion of fishnets, aqua-neon colored latex, and clear heels is so tired. I have honestly never wondered hmmmm... how would Megan Fox look in $12 clear heels or Anne Hathaway in a plastic bra. I think alot of that has to do with the lack of decent budgets alotted to porn producers in this day and age
But I think there is a decent market for porn with punk chicks. Vivid Alt has been quite successful, although I cant really say Ive jacked it to any of their films. I think the thing that confuses me about those films is that they focus on everything and THEN the sex. When the Ol' in & out should be paramount.

By any chance, have you seen any of Vivid-Alt's movies?

I suspect that most porn viewers grew up in the 90s.
Does anyone have statistics? Statistically, what's the average age of male porn viewers? Or female porn viewers?
I suspect that it may resemble a bell-shaped curve, with most viewers having come of age in the 90's, with fewer viewers having come of age in the 70's and 80's, and fewer people having come of age within the last 8 years.
I have no statistics to back it up. You make an interesting point, BustdownGal. Why does it seem to be stuck 10 to 15 years prior?
And why are 18 year old porn stars dressed in prep school skirts with pigtails and huge lollipops? I say, send the 18 or 19 year old porn stars to shop at Hot Topic!

I'll go out on a different limb....
Porn pays jack shit relative to most film careers and the girls, by and large, are responsible for their OWN wardrobes. Once they pay rent, fees, medical, etc. all they have left is enough money for slut attire purchased at Fredericks and Body by Venus closeout sales.
And besides, who the hell wants to wear their BEST club mindress to a gangbang anal orgy shoot? You ever try to get semen out of a dress before? Just ask Ms. Lewinski about that.

Jules' outfits are good.
RFrog: not talking about "most" porn viewers, talking about "new" porn viewers. The ones between 18 and 26 who turned 18 after 2000. The ones who buy FallOut Boy albums spend $50 on a "vintage" Facts of Life tee. The ones who ironically rock out to Journey even though Journey's Greatest Hits came out before they were born. There's 10,000 pornos made a year...there's room to appeal to everyone.

I have a big fetish for girls with tattoo's and piercing's but it seems like the porn fan base is more against it, because i they might be older.
However, there is "alt-porn" now like Burning Angel and a few others. So i wouldn't label all porn performers out of date.
Like i've said before, the great thing about the porn industry is there is a little of something for everyone.

I like tattoos, but only good ones. No tatts is better than poor tatts. Shitty tatts or having a sleeve for the sake of having a sleeve is a negative or worse.

Ti's an age thing also you have to realize that some of the fashions maight be fetishes alone. I dress the way I do (The 80's style slutty look) because the guys I'm usually with like it! Simple as that. I also have a leather fetish and the guys with same fetish are attracted to me. There has to be something for everybody!

I love the Suicide Girls' look. We need more a alt. girl look in porn without making the streamline gonzo stuff too Goth/Punk. Keep that in it's seperat niche.

I'm not sure I agree here. I'm getting pretty close to my mid 30s and I've hated the overblown fake tits and other stuff in those photos since I started watching porn when I was 18. I just tend to think they're cliches and like most cliches, they're hard to get rid of.

+1,000,000 to BDG's post. I'm not entirely nuts about all the tattoos on the SG girls, though. But at least they're somewhat tasteful.

I think pornstars should do more with their hair instead of that straight mop look. Bring back that classy early 80's look like Seka or whom ever. And also less alt.look bullshit the better.

I'd also say there's probably something to the statement that a lot of really hardcore porn fans have gotten so into the culture of porn, they don't know there's anything outside of it. More casual fans have been asking forever for girls who look more like the girls you might actually see in the real world wearing things women actually wear and it seems to go in one and out the other.
And it happens with the girls too. Some of them are actually very interesting when they first go into the business. Then, for whatever reason, the porn culture turns them into the standard "porn star" with the requisite fake boobs, inflated lips and tacky attire.

I don't quite understand your statement here. I'd like to know how you've come to the conclusion that hardcore pornfans aren't aware of anything (and what do you mean by "anything") outside of the culture of porn.

I think I said what I intended to say pretty clearly. Perhaps you misread it or something. It was a bit of a generalization, yes. But I included some qualifiers that you apparently missed. At any rate, it isn't really a conclusion. Just a theory. Obviously, I can't really know what goes on inside another person's head.

I think its naive to expect porn to be more up to date regarding fashion etc..
Afterall, not all porn fans are the same age. Not everyone wears the same style clothes or listens to the same kind of music.
Older folk are more likely to listen to 60's/70's music, drive older cars, watch older films, whereas younger people will be more into contemporary styles and fashions.
That's what I think is great about porn, there's something for everyone.

I'd definitely like to see more short hair in porn. Not that long hair isn't beautiful, but I especially like some of the Euro stuff where they have a few with short hair. But I agree that the girls seem to have limited wardrobes, I know I've seen the same outfit several different times on the same girl.

I'm a big fan of the alt look--jet dark hair, piercings, tattoos. I'd also like to see more of a girl next door, cute, college look. Why not have sexy, beautiful, horny pornstarlets dressed up like your average co-ed? Tight jeans, boots, tights, baby tees, tight shirts, tank tops. Now that would be hot. There's nothing sexier than a great ass in a pair of jeans.
Enough with the bleach blonde, big fake tits, bimbo look!! With a few exceptions of course haha.

The biggest problem I have with "porn fashion" (and the overall look of the girls) is that there's something really missing. Something major. There's a complete absence of soft femininity. The girls are more like statues than women. It's a weird mix of masculinity and femininity that really turns me off. I like to see women with nice, shiny, healthy hair and nice, natural, feminine bodies. And it absolutely couldn't hurt anything at all for porn women to come in dressed like real women instead of some kind of outdated ideal of "sexy".
It's not just the clothing. It's the whole persona.

Who's the Arbiter of banal from on high, though? You? Me? BDG? Nope. Doesn't work like that. People don't live their lives based around what some random on the intertubes thinks.
I think the 80's Big-Haired Porn Star look is banal. What we have now as the standard (let's use Pammy Anderson) is just an evolution of the 80's look. Hair got smaller, pubes disappeared and everyone got their navels pierced and a lower-back tattoo to go with it.
I find too many or poor tattoos (like the two featured in BDG's image) just as off-putting as the badly-done-barbie-doll-look below the alt.girls.
OTOH, If women are happy with their big fake tits and bleached blonde, or both arms in full sleeves, then more power to them. When the suicide girls look sells as many DVDs as the Barbie doll look, more will be produced.

The so-called alt-look - tattoos, piercings, stuff like that - is a complete turn-off for me.
I LOVE classic ultra-feminine lingerie. Stockings, garters, lace - the more, the better.

See. Complete opposite here. I hate that shit. Nothing turns me off faster than stockings, garters and lace. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they were in fashion when my grandmother was in her 20s. I don't even agree that they are ultra-feminine. Maybe there was a time when they were but it is long gone. Real women today have a much softer, less restrained look. I think stockings probably came in during the time when it was considered evil for a woman to show any skin anywhere other than her face.
Stockings are my bane. Because I love seeing bare legs and nothing has ruined that for me more often than fucking stockings or pantyhose.

How long has the suicide girl look been around? Ten years or more? If the porn industry adopted it now as the default look - and dark hair and elaborate tattoos don't seem that uncommon, at least to myself, who isn't a big fan of the look - wouldn't they just be behind the curve one more time? Here I've been thinking that tattoos and piercings were starting to grow old.
Neither of the presented looks appeal to me. They both seem tarted up, although maybe in opposite directions.
Twenty years from now the ladies with the sleeves, the ones who are always sticking out their tongues to display the oh so daring piercings, will still be around. And all the young people will be saying what's with all the old ugly porn chicks with the cattle stamps above their ass, who finds that sexy? But there will still be an audience for it, all those grampas with celtic band things circling their upper arms.

granted, survivor was released in 1999, but the suicide girls company was started in 2001. that's seven years of contemporary, constantly updated fashion.

I'll try. I'll have to look around a bit and see what I can find. It's hard to find just exactly THAT look. Pictures of it (I'm sure) are everywhere and yet they're nowhere in particular because it's just a casual look that a lot of women normally wear in their day to day lives. Not too flashy and not too casual.

I agree. But I like them for both reasons. I don't generally care for a lot of tattoos and piercings but their tatts and piercings are often thoughtful, well-done and actually erotic (As opposed to just having some random symbol stamped in some random spot). And plus, I get into "strange". I think mystery is sexy.

Writing a poem, drawing a picture, composing a song -- that's free expression. Picking a tattoo pattern off a wall is about as expressive as selecting canned goods.
