Here are a few of my personal recommendations (both newer and older films and videos). These really are the movies I recommend to people (both men and women) who aren't well versed in this stuff.
Category 1: Real movies that happen to be XXX
ROOMMATES (Chuck Vincent, 1981) - Not only is this one of the best XXX films ever made, period, but this film will surely silence any naysayers who doubt the dramatic qualities sexually explicit cinema can have. This film isn't just "good for porn," it's simply great, by any standards. Top notch writing, directing, production values, and acting that'll knock your socks off. The story involves three women, each from different backgrounds, trying to make it in NYC, but discovering that finding success is harder than they think. Judith Crist loved it.
THE DANCERS (Anthony Spinelli, 1981) - A testament to how great the writing in XXX films can be, this complex, and very touching character based drama is low budget but so agonizingly real that the minimal sets and workmanlike cinematography is more than made up for by the brilliant direction and acting and what might be the finest script ever penned for the sexploitation screen. Working almost like a play, THE DANCERS tells the tale of a traveling troupe of male strippers and the chance encounters they have in a small town, while on tour; each story framed by man's dance routine.
Category 2: After the 80's, there was no good XXX, right?
MASSEUSE (Paul Thomas, 1990) - The first great DTV (direct to video) feature made (although this one was shot on film). The simple tale of a lonely man who becomes romantically obsessed with his masseuse. This is a minimalist masterpiece, following two characters as their relationship progresses. This is a film of nuance and subtlety that's performed seamlessly and directed flawlessly. A testament to how true artistry is never destroyed by social or technological changes.
NO LIMITS (Nic Andrews, 2003) - For anyone looking for a traditional Hollywood B grade action flick mixed with XXX, this is your movie. Nothing too serious, the movie is deliberate high camp mixed with some savvy film references, thrown in for good measure. A nifty twist ending awaits in this high stakes tale of a possible kidnapping.
Category 3: My favorite directors are Bunuel and Murnau...
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (Jonas Middleton, 1976) - A masterpiece of surreal horror, TTLG is a truly unsettling study of childhood trauma and the sordid lives of the upper class, topped off by a Dante-esque vision of the underworld. Exquisite visuals mix overt abstraction with rich symbolism in a complex story of despicable people trapped in a vulgar world and haunted by their own personal demons.
CAFE FLESH ("Rinse Dream" - 1982) - Deco futurism abounds in this lurid metaphor for the porn audience and their perceived objectification of the porn performer. Some of the finest production design ever witnessed in XXX, FLESH is a moody new-wave nightmare that's part Sartre and part Huxley. Fine writing and directing surround the disturbing and pointedly anti-humanist sexual setpieces.
Category 4: Acting and plot makes my brain hurt...
SQUALOR MOTEL (Kim Christy, 1986) - Don't ask what this weird vignette film is about, just accept its bizarre setups, weird costumes, crazy dialogue and all-around randomness and you'll be blown away by the pretty lights and funky score.
HIGH RISE (Danny Steinman, 1972) - While this one has a plot "set-up," this is more or less a crazy vignette film involving a ditsy young woman's adventures in an apartment building. Each vignette mixes humor with beautiful cinematography and a truly fantastic original score.

Is the DVD release of Squalor Motel decent enough to pick up?

Heh...Nope. But don't wait around for a remastered release any time soon...or ever.

Big fan of Squalor.
Colleen Brennan's talents are given full reign to satisfy a viewer's kinky, voyeuristic side. As she wanders from freak show to freak show, it's fascinating to watch her stuck-up motel registration desk facade melt down into her true raison d'etre: Fully-engaged proprietress of an iniquitous hovel where thrill-seekers act out their deviant fantasies.
Almost singlehandedly, Colleen gave the porno biz another three years of credibility. She was alone at the time as someone who could carry a film erotically and narratively.

True enough, but at least I know what I'm getting. It's not exactly an expensive buy anyway.

Well I've been a Colleen fan forever, so I've been sold on her. I wouldn't say she was the only one at the time though. I do think she was one of the best ever though. I just saw The Initiation Of Cynthia with her for the first time, and again was impressed by her. Even if George Payne weirded me out.

The Initiation of Cynthia has got to be Colleen's smuttiest performance of all time. The way she ravenously begs for cock alone messes my pants up, much less what she does with the multitudes that are offered her.
