TOP TEN RULES FOR PORN BEGINNERS 1. Your first porno is best bought and watched alone. Privacy reduces the potential for the shame and embarrassment that may accompany this momentous occasion. Watching it with someone else is only going to lead to A. Sex, if you're lucky or B. Someone walking out of the room in embarrassment or disgust. Tastes are so individual that the only way to successfully get one for someone else is not to. If you don't go to the store or to the monitor to help your partner choose it, you're less likely to like it, which leads to the next rule. 2. Don't buy porn for people who haven't seen it before (i.e. your wife) unless it's a gag gift. Any adult who has never seen a porno, not even accidentally, has been actively avoiding it and doesn't want to see it. It's the 21st century--porno is everywhere. Even those who choose to avoid it are more likely than not to have accidentally seen it: walked in on someone watching it; popped in the wrong DVD at a friend's house; typed in "whitehouse.com" instead of "whitehouse.gov"; any of a number of ways. Unless the person you're buying for gives you specifics, don't expect them to like it. They may let you try again, but don't expect initial success. Communicate Communicate Communicate. 3. Porn must be watched while jacking and jilling. Porn is made for people who are engaging in sexual activity while watching it, either alone or with a partner. You can’t approach it like you would a Hollywood movie. It’s interactive. You have to pull out your joysticks and Fire buttons. If you try to sit and watch Cunt On A Hot Tin Roof in the same way you watch Inception--with your pants on--you will be bored. But start dipping into that inter-thigh wetness, then all of a sudden every single detail becomes exciting. It's like you're having fantasy sex with the people onscreen, and your focus becomes laser-like. Another option is watching the movie but mentally banking the images and sounds for later when you're masturbating. 4. Not everyone sexually behaves the same way you do. I've heard a lot of people sneer "Fake!" at this or that in a porno. If performers do something that's never occurred to you to do, that's "different", or that "looks uncomfortable," don't assume it's fake or not pleasurable. Try it first before you judge. Porn can be a learning tool as well. 5. Do work. You can find videos of any kind of sex you want with any kind of people you want if you're willing to do a little internet searching to find it. There are over 11,000 porno videos released a year. (Hollywood distributes about 500.) For every porno that fits the sitcom writer's stereotype of porn, there are 50 that don't. For every body type, there are entire series dedicated to worshipping them. There is more porn on Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than is dreamt of in your philosophy. 6. "Amateur" is a marketing tool. Pornographers use this word to polarize the stereotypes of "fake porno sex" vs. "real sex" and to get money from consumers who believe that "amateur camerawork" is equivalent to "real couples who LOVE each other having sex." Who is more of an "amateur": a 19-year-old porn performer who's working with a "professional" company and has had sex with 7 guys in her lifetime; or a 43-year-old exhibitionist who's had sex with 150 men in her lifetime and is distributing clips of her and her boyfriend via the internet? The later will label her video "amateur", but either way, it's a performance. It's exhibitionism. The vast majority of porno videos with the word "amateur" on the cover are using porn professionals anyway. Homegrown Video is one of the only companies dedicated to distributing videos made by people outside the porno industry. 7. Trying porn is FREE FREE FREE. And I'm talking legally free, too. There's lots of porn previews/trailers available from sites like EvilAngel.com, AskJolene.com and FreeOnes.com. And, of course, right here on ADT. In today's world you don't have to waste money paying for pornos you end up not liking. You can watch free previews of the parts of the movie that the director thinks is the best. Heed, though: for some reason many porn previews are better made than the porno itself. The editing and music is much tighter and fast-paced. Some of these previews have the quality of a TV commercial! But then the movie turns out to be the same old point-and-shoot porno. If the whole video was as good as the preview...well, that would be one hot video but it would probably only last 10 minutes. But it'd be so hot I wouldn't need more than 10 minutes. =) 8. There is a short list of things you shouldn't expect to see. If you're worried about gross surprises, here's what you will probably NOT see (if your first porno is an American porno): Piss, poop, period blood, fisting, vomiting, necrophilia, bestiality, ch*** p***ography. Legal US porn bought from a store or a legit website almost never shows these things, and it NEVER never shows the last one. If you get the European version of some US-made videos, you may run across a peeing scene. There is a long list of things you should expect to see in standard pornos, but you can just check out the list of topics in ADT's forum to get a sense of those. 9. Porno does not have anywhere near the cinematic quality of a standard Hollywood movie. The vast majority of porn has the quality of a home video. This is not an exaggeration. We consumers take Hollywood for granted, and we underestimate how very hard and very expensive it is to make a Hollywood movie. $500,000 is "low budget" in the mainstream movie business. You can make 10 pornos for half a million dollars. So, don't buy your first porno with high expectations, no matter what the box says. The porn videos with the highest production values are one level below a music video. Watching porn is more similar to watching a sports match than a movie. Everyone's improvising moves within a set of rules; everyone's more athletic than you; and the camera is doing its best to follow the balls. DO NOT believe those people who talk about the "Golden Age" where "porno movies actually had plots." Those people are in love with their *memories* of those movies, not the reality of them. If you watch old pornos like Behind the Green Door (1972) or Deep Throat (1972) after watching The Godfather or Star Wars, you'll laugh at the very idea of comparing pornos to real cinema. If you're looking for "something erotic for your spouse, but not too hardcore/too slutty/too graphic," or "something with a plot," then leave the porn room and rent one of the following award-winning, mainstream erotic films that fit those requirements better than "couples porn": 9 1/2 Weeks Body Heat Breaking the Waves Crash (the Holly Hunter one) Damage The Dreamers Eyes Wide Shut Frankie and Johnny Last Tango in Paris Legends of the Fall Mulholland Drive Romance Secretary Sex and Lucia Shortbus Splendor The Unbearable Lightness of Being Threesome Wild Orchid Y Tu Mama Tambien 10. Porno appeals to your horniness. That simple. Don't expect artiness or something revolutionary. The question to ask yourself when considering getting a porn video is, "Do I want to watch people performing sex acts?" If the answer is "Yes," then go for it knowing that's what you'll find. "... If you watch old pornos ... you'll laugh at the very idea of comparing pornos to real cinema." Really? Go tell Radley Metzger that. The Opening of Misty Beethoven is real cinema. And not all "old pornos" are created equal. I mean, if you discount so-called exploitation films, a blanket term that '70s feature porn can fit under, as cinema, then that's your taste. I argue, instead, that along with various other grindhouse reels of that era, celluloid porn is as legit as anything else.

Yeah, Cafe Flesh and Nightdreams are more purely cinematic than many of the "mainstream" erotic films on BDG's list. But what difference does it make? BDG is on a crusade and you can't reason with a crusader. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow
It's a very good post, but I think you missed the boat in your dismissal of Golden Age films. There was an abundance of talent, dollars, and well-made thinking/wanking person's eroticism in movies too numerous to mention in the late 70s and early 80s.
Yes, indeed. If years of watching commercials for mainstream movies haven't taught you that the ad is not the movie then this is definitely advice you need. Granted, it will go unheeded, since you were too dumb to figure it out from said mainstream movies, but don't blame BustDownGal, you lazy pervert, you.
This is almost the perfect way to describe MOST porn but I would add one slight point. The vast majority of porn DOES resemble a home video. Which wouldn't be so bad if the vast majority of porn didn't resemble EXACTLY the same home video. It's that bad that you can watch one porn flick and you've pretty much seen them all. It wouldn't be nearly as bad that porn seemed amateurish if everybody did their own thing, experimented and tried to find something unique that worked for them. I can deal with a shaky camera, less than perfect lighting, sirens in the background, weird noises that come from behind the camera somewhere, sloppy dialogue. What I can't deal with is paint by numbers assembly line porn where it is all flawed in exactly the same way.
+1 to Skronker and Roads. I'm predictable, I know, but felt I had to weigh in. Edited by - Gore Gore Girl on 12/16/2010 3:31:35 PM Edited by - Gore Gore Girl on 12/16/2010 3:37:11 PM
How did I miss this earlier?? Oh my, this is insulting. It's also untrue, considering I wasn't born when these films were made, so, y'know. To be clear, I am in love with the *reality* of "those movies," *and* the memory of watching them last week, and the week before that. Not necessarily the ones mentioned, but to be honest I doubt the OP has seen the ones I'm thinking of, otherwise they might not have listed 9 1/2 Weeks as a cinematic alternative. I'm also in love with the prospect of watching the new DVDs I got in the mail today, and the memories they will in turn create.
I totally disagree with that. I've never jacked off while watching a porno movie. It is possible to watch porno movies as movies and not a sex enhancer. And I always approach feature porno movies like I do Hollywood movies. I watch those kind of porno movies for the plot.
Overall, I thought it was a pretty good list. Many of the points are spot-on (especially the top 7) and I can really relate to them. Some replies are overlooking the "for beginners" part. Of course if you're a jaded know-it-all it will all seem trite and obvious. But I remember getting suckered by the "amateur" porn that turned out to just another assembly line, only with fewer robots. And bringing home porn for a GF(at her request), with disastrous results. And getting suckered by previews and boxcovers. And #5 is just recently becoming true. You can find almost any porn you want, if you work hard and are willing to spend money and break/bend rules. As recently as 5 years ago, this was not true. I'm not smart enuf to weigh in on the Siskel+Ebert vs. BustdownGal sub(?)plot.

^ After 19 years in the business, I won't even try to deny being a know-it-all (although I don't believe I'm as jaded as certain of my contemporaries), but I don't believe you need a Masters in Film Studies to recognize that Cafe Flesh is a more artistic creation than, say, Wild Orchid. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow
Without repeating other posts, I would like to add another vote in defence of Golden Age porn (jeez I hate that term, but it seems to be standard and well understood what is meant). I find it interesting that the two vintage titles mentioned by the original poster were Deep Throat and Behind the Green Door. If they represent OP's exposure to films of the era, no wonder he takes a jaundiced view: though each has merits, neither really stands up to some of the classic plot-driven movies from the 70's and early 80's IMHO. My impression is that they have historical significance for their impact on pornography (and general movie goers) that exceeds their artistic worth. (Am I allowed to say "artistic worth" referring to porn? ) That being said, both movies still compare well with much of what has followed them in the nearly 40 years since, although I don't think Deep Throat holds up nearly as well as Green Door. However, I welcome scathing responses to my assessment of both films; I am far from a film scholar, be it porn or otherwise!

^ No need for a scathing response; both those titles are iconic - the original Deep Throat is back in the mainstream news this week thanks to the latest Thora Birch drama. If I were going to toss out a Damiano title it would have been The Story Of Joanna, but it's all good. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow
For the household name classics, The Devil in Miss Jones holds up best, in my opinion. I truly love that film. But consider, which action flicks or other trashy genre films become the household names? Are they the nerds' favourite films of that genre? Usually not. But the people who throw out those titles as though that's the be all and end all of the genre are basically screaming "I don't know what I'm talking about!" Porn just happens to be a genre where you can get away with not knowing what you're talking about -- everyone has an expert opinion on it from watching two scenes. It's all the same, right?
Actually, since rights issues prevent a lot of great 70s/80s fare from being properly remastered and reissued, it's no wonder there's such a lack of appreciation ... It's a shame, too.
There's too much complaining in this tread. I thought the list had some good insights. But, I think you give too much credit to Homegrown, and sell short other great sources of amateur content. Homegrown is the big-dog here and deserves credit, but has their share of what's generally referred to as ProAm. Sources like ShotAtHome, Platinum, and recently HomeMade and others have some good stuff and probably less ProAm. But to your point, it would be nice if Amateur really meant all the performers being filmed were there because they enjoyed having sex together, not just random performers acting like they were enjoying themselves.
I commented on your list of "award winners" in the Porn for Skeptics, but I feel like you really need to do better research in general before you dismiss the artistry of X rated films. First off, you're right about two major things: XXX films do tend to have minuscule budgets, compared to Hollywood films, and the actors who perform in many of them are often sub-par. The reason for this is the cheapness of the producers, not a lack of talent on the part of some of the directors. And the idea of truly narrative XXX is all but dead. Even the handful of filmmakers who still attempt narrative XXX are hampered by studio imposed sex scenes that run too long and occur too often. Now, on to your moronic statement regarding 70s XXX...First off, I can assume that you've seen only a handful of XXX films made in the 70s, like DEEP THROAT, BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR, TABOO, and DEBBIE DOES DALLAS. Well, those suck (except GREEN DOOR, which is an avant-garde performance piece and not a traditional narrative film, so making that comparison is pointless). What 70s XXX films have you seen? And before you make such ignorant statements, you ought to watch some of the excellent XXX narrative films recommended in "the features side." If you still feel this way after watching movies like THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, ROOMMATES, MEMORIES WITHIN MISS AGGIE, CAFE FLESH, THE DANCERS, TAKE OFF, THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN, BACCHANALE, BLONDE AMBITION, MISBEHAVIN, etc., then we'll agree to disagree. Oh, and it's good to know that STAR WARS is the pinochle of great American cinema from the 70s, cause, you know, filmmakers like Robert Altman, William Friedkin, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorcese just don't hold a candle to the likes of George Lucas, who's even admitted he's not terribly good at directing actors, which is why he directs machines. Also, a better comparison than sports matches would be 70s TV movies. The pacing and production values are similar. I'm just really sick of people who haven't actually watched these films trying to diminish their quality. Edited by - john lyons on 12/17/2010 9:05:08 PM
Radley Metzger is pretty great from what I've seen. I loved Misty Beethoven and as a movie. It was fun and sexy. I'm actually looking into picking up the Cult Epics Blu-ray of Score soon. It's nice to see his films finally getting good releases.

^ I was thinking of hosting a Score / Wild Orchid double feature for the OP so we could debate the fallacies of Rule #8, but since Rule #3 dictates that "porn must be watched while jacking or jilling" I guess that ain't gonna happen... Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow

Ironically, the Golden Girls' Rue McClanahan lived with (but refused to marry despite repeated proposals) softcore / hardcore auteur John Hayes. She even appeared in some of his earlier, "tamer" work. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow

Not to add to the dogpile on the OP, but I love 'Classic Era' porn and it started up several years before I was ever born and I didn't really discover it until the mid to late 90s.
In the early 1980s, I saw the xxx version of The Devil in Miss Jones on a 6 hour VHS tape with 3 or 4 other features and never thought much of it. Seeing the restored widescreen version put out a year or two ago changed my mind. Damiano's commentary is terrific plus the second disc of extras has other interviews, etc. He made the film for next to nothing and seemed to relish the fact that he had more money to make Story of Joanna a few years later. Back then, the younger me referred to these films simply as "shit flicks" but the middle-aged me appreciates what Damiano accomplished with such limited resources, especially in the case of Devil In Miss Jones.
Here's where I think BDG misses the boat on its assessment of Golden Age films coming up short cinematically. So many of these films did what subsequent generations of big-budget porn failed to: They explored the feminine psyche. The reason the Golden Age stars are precisely that is that they -- and likewise the scripts -- imbued their characters with recognizable dimensions. For lack of a better analogy, they weren't all manifestations of a certain, notorious Berlin song. This is why the fast forward button really isn't your friend when watching these grand films. The eroticism is directly related to the cranial probe.
I'd argue that you could adequately list nearly all of those films without much trouble. No matter how you slice it, for every great movie like Insatiable, there are 500 crappy ones that we've conveniently forgotten about (or would like to).
Me neither. If all an X rated film can do is turn me on, why should I watch it? I expect my hardcore sex movies to excite my mind and my senses. I expect sex scenes to make me laugh, cry, or feel emotionally, not physically. To me, the mark of a great XXX movie is emotional resonance. My eyes still swell with tears each time I watch the scene at the end of THE DANCERS as Georgina Spelvin stands stoically on her porch watching as Richard Pacheco drives by, knowing she'll never see him again. That moment is more powerful than the "hottest" sex scene ever, because it's human. That's what I look for in my smut: humanity.
^ Y'know, one of the things that bugs me the most about those I have butted heads with over the years in academic circles/those who read academic books is that they strongly believe porn should be judged by its lowest common denominator. It's so frustrating. Every other genre or medium being studied is permitted and encouraged to be analyzed according to its finest examples, but if I put forth some fine examples of porn, they say "that's the exception that proves the rule!"
Well, IMO, Insatiable sucks. It's like one of those globe-trotting Emanuelle films Joe D'Amato made. But I'd agree: most 70s XXX sucks, but so do most movies, period. It's the good ones that count. The bad ones are a given.
My point is that I agree with people who say the "Golden Age" is overrated in terms of quality production. I think the Golden Age is just an indication of what to expect at the time: more of an emphasis on blowjobs, more pubic hair, etc. I don't think the quality was better overall, either as a percentage of output or any other measure. I think "Golden" gives people inaccurate expectations.
