^ You do make a lot of valid points. But g/g is my favorite category of porn, and stars like Riley Reid and Jessie Andrews seem like they love doing the things they do with other women, in the porn of today. In the g/g scenes of the 80s & 90s, with very few exceptions, the women would quickly get to the clit licking, skipping through any kissing as quickly as possible. In fact it usually appeared like the women would rather avoid having to kiss another woman. And when it came to French kissing, at the top of my list of things to see, you could pretty much forget it. And let's face it, when 2 people are really hot for each other, there's almost always plenty of kissing involved.
But today, when you have a scene like the one Riley and Jessie did in Lush 4, rather than it seeming like you're just watching 2 women who were paid to lick each other's pussys, it comes across like genuine lovemaking between two people who have real feelings for each other. Plus, they sure have none of that hesitancy about kissing that seemed to typify
the g/g couples of 80s and 90s porn. So, long story short, I thing the good g/g scenes of today are a lot more convincing than what was considered good a couple decades ago.

I have developed a preference for just sex in lez porn, without the stories or sketches that most of the current directors stick in there, since so many of those stories are about fights, blackmail, deception, manipulation, etc. The extra bit that I watch when I can find it is the women being themselves, without interference from someone pretending to be a competent writer/director.
"Being themselves" on a current set may be something very dull, such as staring down at their twitter pages. The constant PR aspect of being a porn performer now may put a wall between realistic and fun.

I think overall porn has gotten a lot better in the past four years in spite of some of the problems that have developed. The big stars are doing more things like deepthroating, IR, blowbangs, swallowing, bbg threesomes, gangbangs, and anal. Bad performances are no longer tolerated no matter how hot the girl is except for at the beginning of her career. Look at the performances of some of the stars of the 2010s like Dani Daniels and Teal Conrad and compare them to the performances of 2000s stars like Raylene and Lisa Ann. I think you will see a noticable difference in performance and enthusiasm. Also, the girls are getting better and seem more real. No tatoos, no peircings. Teal Conrad seems like the most "real" girl ever to be in porn. She carries herself well. We need more girls like her. And Jezabel Vessir is amazing.

You said "Actually, Riley and Dani simply make the vast majority of girl/girl performers from the 1970s, 80s, and most of the 90s, really look pathetic"
Sorry neither one comes close to Felecia as far as looks and performer.

^^ No tattoos? No piercings? On girls from the 2010s.
I couldn't disagree more. Bad tattoos are more common among porn girls of the last five years than girls from the 2000s. Same with piercings if for no other reason the relatively recent craze of "dermals."

Yeah, recently revisited some Ginger Lynn and Nina Hartley flicks from the 1980s. Those 2 women's videos were as about as in demand as any tapes were back then. But being a devoted g/g fan, I just have to say that the g/g scenes were so tame and inhibited in the 80s,
compared with today.
Most of the women that Ginger and Nina worked with looked like they'd run a mile just to avoid any deep, much less open mouth, kissing. Sisters greeting each other at the airport sometimes kiss more passionately.
And if you were hoping to see any girl on girl tongue in the asshole action in your 1980s porn, you could just forget about seeing any porn star of that era sticking her tongue where the sun don't shine.
Seems like so many women who were supposed to be hot girl/girl performers in the 80s would have enjoyed much greater success if they had trained to be Sunday school teachers.
Even including Ginger & Nina, there were no g/g performers in the 1980s who displayed the totally uninhibited, no holds barred, sexuality, that Riley Reid & Jessie Andrews, for example, reveal in their scene together in Lush 4.
Compared to modern ladies like Jessie and Riley, the g/g performers of the 80s were 6th grade level actresses struggling to make it look like they were enjoying themselves. By contrast, women like Jessie and Riley are so unrestrained, and at such obvious ease with each other, that you know they are turned on and thoroughly enjoying the stimulation that each is receiving from the other. 80s g/g porn was such totally fake crap, by comparison.

Having said that about heavy weighters from the 80's in some other post about huge swordsmen, I'm more into spinners and newbies and orgies and double plays and a variety of stuff these days than the hard beating sluggish types that where thrown over you like a thunderstorm full of big fake tits and high hairstyles like in oldfashioned wrestling.
Seems like the last decade or so has provided lots more of such variety than the decades before where much was very big and less was a bit small. A Halle Von, Riley Reid, Kennedy Leigh, Sasha Hall, Sara Luvv or Ariana Marie back in the 80s really would have had problems to pass as typical porngirls, even though Tanner Mayes may had been reckoned as Elvis Presley's lost daughter. They would have been too small or simply too cute, anyway they would have had earthshaking sensational impact, especially without a bush. These where yet to be discovered! So porn is better now. And I'm not only weighing the bush in. That's just an important part. Pretty important though, I mean the typical lack of it. The out-of-controll-growing bushes coming out of every corner seem stalinistic and scary looking back on now.
Now there's lot more to every preferance. You don't have to go live with porn mainstream anymore, having to go through all features till you can't take one more. A gonzofree world would may have killed the interest. In the real old days you had like two companies producing everything compared to now. The only gonzo out there was presented by maniac writers draining their balls over a smoked up typemachine. So the stuff you had to live with was either soft or hard with very tanned flesh so bigtitted and curly and freakin' german too and that was about it and sure another reason to just kill yourself.

The mid to late 80s were a terrible time for porn in general.
If you want to see some great vintage lesbian scenes watch almost anything Georgina Spelvin shot with a woman in the 70s: her scenes with her girlfriend in The Devil in Miss Jones, 3AM and her scene with Jessie St James in Easy are all volcanic and amazing.
Agree about Riley and Jessie. There are several great scenes in Lush and Girl Crush.

The porn might be better, but only because they pussies are shaved.
Back then scenes barely lasted 8 minutes, but at least you know where you stood with them. Today, you can have an hour's scene and basically see nothing.
Seems there's a lot of talking in today's porn which irritates me.
And most of today's porn has hot babes but the often badly positioned camera lense 90% of the time lets scenes and movies down.

Everyone {nearly} is blonde.
Too much Silicone.
Bald neither erotic nor hot.
Porn since the mid 90's is no longer erotic. Sure the girls are good looking and they fuck well, but it isn't erotic.

Yeah, well...everything subjective depends on our individual POVs. The only things that dont care about our opinions and POVs are facts. As this topic (porn better now or before?)cannot be determined as an objective absolute fact, obviously it goes without saying that what I said depends on my POV.

Not sure who you're referring to. Lots of the big stars of the past decade were not blondes and no sign of silicone: Gianna Michaels, Kristina Rose, London Keyes, Charley Chase, Jada Stevens, Tori Black, Sasha Grey, Dani Daniels, etc.

Upsides to today's porn: Stars are more versatile, doing more things like bbg, IR, anal, dp, gangbang, blowbang, swallowing , better performances in general, more deepthroating, better blowjobs
Downsides to today's porn: too many stars being prostitutes, too many short careers, bad cameramen, bad camera angles that are too tight most of the time, too much pov, too many stars drastically changing their looks (colored hair, plastic surgery, tatoos, etc.)

I'm 28 and should probably be one of those that value todays porn higher, but i'm not. My intro to porn was, believe it or not, the Taboo series. Yes, THE Taboo series. Ever since i have done my best to collect movies from those eras. There is something about them that hits something in me. I do like porn where they dont just get right down to the sex, so that is probably one of the reasons i liked it so much. There was a story, solid acting(it really was) and more erotic and sensual. It feels more real than it does today. Many in todays porn doesnt even seem to enjoy it from my point of view. And we have to many fake tits, fake asses and fake whatever. Not to mention the same girls doing the same thing in the same place over and over again. It gets old very fast.
Subjectivly i want porn to take a trip back and throw a little bit more focus into the feature side of it. Explore some taboos harder. Travel to some exotic places and create something beautiful. Be creative. Put in more effort, not just more dicks.

For the anal freak that I am, today's porn got better in terms of bringing me the most gorgeous super model girls willing to take huge dicks up their cute assholes. Absolute beauties like Jillian Janson, Megan Rain, Carter Cruise, Alex Grey or Ariana Marie doing anal is such a dream come true. This is something I couldn't get in the 90's when I started watching. But I have to agree that producers no longer get much creative in terms of setup and locations.

Overall that is my biggest peeve with today's porn, not just fake tits.. that everything feels faked! In scenario porn it feels real, in today's formula of intro then cut to naked-couch-facial scene you know immediately its fake, the moment the dubstep intros starts you know its a porn scene, a girl getting paid to be fucked, and as you said often looking like they are not enjoying it and with them whaling like banshee for 40 mins..
I want to see girls in genuine ecstacy not endurance!
And yes, again, bring back beautiful creative higher budget porn, sounds counter-productive, but also need to change business models and embrace technology, and if you make it they will cum!
I don't know as have never been to a prostitute, but have read that with falling sales in porn and tubes sites almost being used for promotion.. perhaps today's porn is being used somewhat as an advertisement for their prostituting? Perhaps why less sensual and more fuck-toy bedroom/couch scenes, though also obviously cheaper production costs, to mimic what service they can provide for you as a prostitute? Again must stress just talking off the top of my head here..

Those are choices made by the production company and the directors, the stars rarely have say over set design and positions, as long as it isn't on their "No" list.

^ Yeah, still doesn't make much sense. If it's an ad for their services, why wouldn't they want to put their best foot forward to impress prospective clients? It's not like McDonald's cuts ads that make their burgers look like shit. They use all kinds of tricks to make their food looks as delicious as possible. I think the same would apply to performers who escort on the side. They want to make potential customers think it's worth putting the money down.

I agree partially, but as a person who started in the 70s, I think what you're describing actually started about 10 years ago, and ended a couple of years ago, in terms of quality and quantity of output. I think the newer cameras allow for a more glamorous look so it may make the newer stars look better to a modern eye. If you look at Anabolic, Red Light District, Jules Jordan, Evil Angel, Seymour Butts, Elegant Angel ten years ago: they had similarly hot talent doing nasty deeds regularly. Lots of group sex. Casts with 10-12 people and more in one release. Anal almost all the time. Tease scenes. Lesbian scenes. Vaginal sex. The whole package. Look at the Outnumbered series. There are 25+ in some of these releases. Now it is sometimes 4-5 girls in one release.
Now you get really hot girls doing fair to middling anal scenes, one girl at a time. Every couple of months, you get a promising group scene and it usually is no more than four people. Mick Blue's Best Day Ever, Manuel Reverse Gangbang, Orgy Masters, and the like which come out once or twice a year, used to come out almost monthly in porn.
Other than Evil Angel, the other studios mentioned (if they are still in business) are releasing lots of vag-only titles, which 10 years ago would have been by Vivid or Wicked Pictures and the like. I'm all for studios and talent making money however they need to, and I'm sure the cycle will come around again someday. However, if you go to the pay site VideoBox or any of the studios' sites, and do a search for the non-vanilla sex acts and scenes you will see very few recent releases and dozens or hundreds from 2002-20014 for example. Something happened as of a couple of years ago that really changed the industry's output. I can't believe it is consumer driven because the nature of porn is that consumers seem to want more and more to get satisfaction. The fact that it has been vanilla as of late doesn't fit that mold.
The torture-gore-porn Horror movie craze started around the same time (early/mid 2000s), and you could say that maybe wider audiences are tired of that level of intensity by now because it has played out, and major motion pictures rely on box office sales. I don't get that with porn, because the porn industry isn't relying on box office.
Maybe some think that Playboy was the height of men's magazines, but I was always more into Penthouse. Beautiful women, not as glamorously airbrushed and retouched as in Playboy, but hotter and a bit nastier. To me, modern porn aesthetics are more along the lines of Playboy, in a relative sense. There is nothing wrong with that.
If you're into soft porn, then I'd give you that this is probably the Golden Age, but for Hardcore porn it has passed by. There's still some out there to be had, but it is few and far between in the American market. For hardcore porn fans, I think there will be a resurgence but it is currently in a down cycle. Just my 2 cents.
It would be interesting if some major porn company could do some crowd funding for audience to build a porn scene or entire release: talent and sex acts, set-up, etc. (I am not talking about cam scites or one of the lesser niche porn websites as I know there are similar concepts already). One of the major studios getting a real-time poll of what people would like to see. Done rambing

I think your assumption that the majority of the audience needs escalating group sex and circus acts isn't well founded. Outside of anal it seems the average or casual porn consumer is more than happy with 'vanilla' porn and probably always has been. There does seem to be a growing demand for light S&M, g/g, TS and IR.
The idea of the escalating demand for more extreme acts seems to have been more driven by certain producers during a specific time period and a vocal minority who use to spend a lot on VHS and DVD porn rather than the demands of the general audience. It should also be noted that the idea of an escalating demand for more extreme acts is a favourite trope of anti-pornographers.
I suspect that vocal minority who use to spend a lot on porn are most likely among those using torrent sites and tube sites today. So producers have to create product of a wider appeal and higher quality to engage those few people who are willing to pay for their porn.

Gonzo seems to have blended, for lack of a better term, into the mainstream, with some scenes being more "athletic" than others.
This totally isn't a bad thing. For some years it seemed as though all you got was gonzo, that has rolled back a lot.
The return of the pubic hair is most welcome and except for stars who may feel that they are out-shot, the implant craze seems to be lessening, that or i'm getting good at ignoring the balloon factory stars.

Thanks for sharing your POV. That's a really healthy debate among porn lovers. It's true that the 4-5 girls per release has become the norm now and no one surprises us anymore. I guess we have gained a few things while losing some others.

A couple of things to start with.
1. My capacity to enjoy porn hasn't really changed that much in the forty or so years since I acquired my first Penthouse magazine - certainly the channels by which I interact with the images, and the nature of the images, has changed but the fundamental basis for my enjoyment, sexy women being sexy, remains constant;
2. In terms of moving images, picture quality and sound quality has improved in the period since I began having regular access to hardcore (as opposed to softcore) videos - around the mid-80s.
What has changed, for me?
Then -
My porn consumption habits have gone from 70s and 80s non-explicit 'girly mags', especially Penthouse, through softcore (censored hardcore) videos, which were consumed via stealing random moments at my parents' place or when flatmates were away for a definite timeframe (since sexually explicit videos were not legal in NZ until the mid-80s and I didn't have my own personal VCR), and beyond...
...In the early to mid-90s I inherited my first VCR and had it set up in my bedroom - as such I could watch Porn vids at my leisure. The major constraint upon enjoying porn, once I established my own private pornzone, was money. I was a part-time minimum-wage worker with a dope habit - renting porn was a once a month thing, buying a video was a two or three time a year experience. Also, when it came to purchases the range of selection was very limited - there were two vendors located in pokey premises in back streets with mostly duplicated product - racks displaying VHS box covers in a small space. These guys held a local monopoly and priced their wares accordingly. Furthermore I had no idea about who were the currently hot pornstars or what videos they had performed in, other than from the box covers on offer at the vendors or in the Adult Section of the Video Rental Store (where the selection was relatively more extensive, but certainly not comprehensive). It wasn't the case that I could find this out via magazines - purchasing a magazine pretty much blew my monthly porn video rental budget, Penthouse only had four or five porn reviews per issue and wasn't pornstar-focused otherwise, while the more pornstar-focused magazines (such as Genesis) were not stocked as widely as Playboy/Penthouse and were even more expensive.
Yet despite these constraints my experience as a porn fiend was consistently a journey of discovery and surprise. Sure, early on I realized the hot chick on the slick would only be in one scene and the performance would be lame, but over time I learned to decode the smoke, mirrors, baits and switches. On the other hand the joys of discovering Ginger, Amber, Shanna, Shayla, Kylie and Silvia were moments of unexpected revelation. And when one of my godesses took it up her beautiful ass it would be a lighning bolt of joyful surprise to culminate a thunderous scene of sexy pleasure - I might have wished for the anal treat but until it happened I may not have seen it cumming. Gonzo porn - Stagliano, Butts and Leslie - was a home run smashed at me from left field. Sure there was dross, technical (sound/lighting) issues and phoned in performances from disinterested never-will-bes, but, each time I visited the rental outlet or the video vendor, the hope I would be able to mine some more porn gold was never futile, and often realized. My lack of knowledge was a kind of innocence and the porn garden was a freshly minted Eden.
Now -
Thanks to the Internet nothing is a surprise. Reviews, forums and databases mean I know who is doing what with whom at all times. Instead of being a journey into the unknown, a voyage of discovery, porn is now an activity more akin to sifting flecks of gold from acres of sand.
Production values may have improved but the level of creativity has not. Pretty much like all early-21st Century consumer product, porn is endless iterations of the same basic model - Jacky St James/Bree Mills, BK/McDonalds, Mike Quasar/Stillsby Alan, Pepsi/Coke, Jules Jordan/Mason, Ford/GM. The relentless reproduction of alternatives disguised as choice.
The vortex of fetishistic extremism - triple anal, double fisting, strangling, head in a vice, whatever hasn't been filmed before - is creativity being sucked into a whirlpool where novelty is the only criterion for activity.
Yeah, there's more, a lot more, and by virtue of total quantity there may be more good stuff but in reality that good stuff is only a thin seam of gold in a mountain of crap.
If in the past the constraint upon my porn consumption was money, it is now time. Who has the time to dredge through the sea of cookie cutter soul-less porn to find the nuggets? Who has the time to construct sensible metaphors?
In the end it remains what it's always been - by luck, design or fate I stumble over performers who are generally worth following, styles/directors/producers whose product is satisfying. I wank, therefore I cum.

The porn of the 80s, when I got my 1st VCR, generally had very poor photography and editing compared to the excellent photography in the better porn productions of today, such as my current favorite, the We Live Together g/g series. Also, the Viv Thomas videos now being put out by MetArt have terrific photography and beautiful women.
And as I mentioned in another post, the girl/girl scenes of the 1980s mostly seemed so fake compared to good g/g porn now. The vast majority of 80s g/g scenes starred women who looked like they were just forcing themselves to make love to other women. But today, women such as Dani Daniels and Riley Reid seem totally natural and comfortable when they fuck other women. Plus, those 2 women, as well as many others today, engage in a lot of hot French kissing and ass licking, 2 activities that rarely took place in the fake g/g scenes of the 80s. I mean, if 2 women are supposed to be really hot for each other, then how do they NOT get involved with doing any nice, open mouthed, tongue to tongue, French kissing.
Also, in the girl/girl porn of the 80s, and in most 90s g/g as well, if the viewer was treated to any tongue to tongue action, at all, the women only did it for a very brief couple of seconds, before quickly moving on to the usual tit sucking and pussy licking. And scenes where a woman would lick her female partner's asshole simply didn't exist in 99.99% of the girl/girl porn of the 1980s, or even in videos of the 1990s, until about the end of that decade. Obviously, the gay for pay women of those past eras were too uncomfortable being intimate with other females to let their tongues wander into certain areas. But, by contrast, some of the truly bi-sexual ladies of 2016's porn, such as Shyla Jennings, Riley Reid, and Dani Daniels, look perfectly natural, as their tongues lustfully devour the assholes of other women, with all of the gusto of a hungry lass licking an ice cream cone.
Yes, absolutely, today's porn (particularly if girl/girl is your favorite kind) is actually much, much better, and more real, than the vast majority of videos that were passed off as supposedly being erotic, in the early decades of hardcore porn videos!

^ Many films of the 70s were very well shot and edited on film, they were just tranferred indifferently to VHS, a less than ideal format for quality in general. The standards and goals of editing in the 70s were very different from modern porn and are hard to compare, although almost all eras overuse the 'meat shot.'
Again, I would recommend you view the g/g scenes of Georgina Spelvin in the 70s and early 80s and you'll see quality g/g did exist back then although most of it disappeared by the late 80s.

It makes me so sad that the currently available copies of shot-on-film porn from the 70s/80s are in such poor shape. Many of them are simply videotaped screens playing the movie. Some of them include the DVD menu, with some anonymous person selecting the "play" button for me. I mean, this stuff is below cheap in terms of effort and quality. This leaves lots of people thinking film is fuzzy and grainy, when it's really rich, warm, and detailed. Bodies look better on film. Spend the money on Vinegar Syndrome to see the real deal.
That said, there were as many incompetent, careless pornographers back then as there are today.

So This.
Not only that, no commentary tracks on films. We're losing stars, it would be nice to have their thoughts on their films.

Jim Holliday did a series where he narrated some details about vintage scenes as the scene started. There is a box set, but it's unavailable. I had one of the movies, and outside of one starlet who's name escapes me (I think Ron Jeremy was in love with her in real life) they were nothing special. Jim's insight was neat though.
I just want to see BBG scenes that are well done. Some eroticism with out all the circus acts. And a good cumshot. I hate tattoos!
Some scenes in vintage porn through the early 80's where quite good. One thing I liked and it wasn't super common, but once in a while the women would rub the cum out onto here face, and still keep blowing a bit. Pretty hot, and passionate. Something I don't see in modern porn. Not the way it was done.

The last couple of months there has been a tremendous amount of great talent comming around, so it's a statement hard to go against. There is only some directors out there missing a little. I loved Diabolic's Sid Knox and couldn't get enough of his work. And Danny Case? Phew... I'm not so sure about Pat Myne. Dane Case came around as classy. Pat Myne was more of a try hard-bartender, or drunken seaman or just an actor. Anyway. These two guys should be kicked in the line-up of some covers again. No one could interact better in the foreplay without their dick hanging out. Jake Malone I guess too, Jules Jordan, sure, but I'm not so sure about the other half of the story. They often end up in some POV before you'll get to the popping. Sid Knox and Danny Case never did. They just captured everything beautifully.

As an anal freak I still remember the first anal scene I watched in the mid 80s with Marc Wallace and Jeannie Pepper. I was thrilled and followed so many beautiful pornstars desparately waiting for their first anal perfomance. Some did, most of them didn´t. As said before it took so many time to find out by studying the covers whether a scene promise to be worthy to watch. So many disappointments pushing the fast-forward-button...Porn today is easy to achieve. You can watch so many scenes on one night. Yeah, that´s great.
And to be honest. Isn´t it a bit like watching a famous and praised soccer match of the 70´s today. You still remember how it thrilled you when you followed it live - and now: kind of embarrassing. Today´s porn is different, tougher, straight to the point, varied and - I mean that´s why we all watch porn: really beautiful girls / milfs!!! Whatelse do you need? So don´t forget the past - but looking forward to what is released tomorrow.

I was born in 1981, so no. I didn't watch my favourite porn when it was contemporary. And I need a whole lot more than a pretty woman, as do many others apparently. You yourself just listed some things outside of beauty that you seek out.

Didn't mean to say she was missing, was saying that she is the only director worth a damn.
Far too many girls now "perform" if that makes any sense. I never got that impression from the majority of the Stars in the Golden Age, except Traci, who was way over the top. Way too much Pacino going on in this era.
Golden Age male performers got it: It isn't about them. Shut Up.
Directors, Once the action starts: Shut Up.

Ok so I was off with the prostitute angle, as makes sense directors/producers call the shots, but..
There has to be reason for the bolded? I hate it! But gotta say Traci's overacting got me hard as steel, back when I was young and could :(
Maybe it's because they have to go for 40mins so have to act, or often appear to not really be enjoying themselves so again have to act?
So ok they are not trying to sell their I can be a fuckbot sextoy for an hour come and use my prostitute services, but so many people for so long have been complaining here about this complete lack of eroticism and sensuality in modern porn??
Why is it so???

Because there really isn't any anymore. Insatiable and Behind The Green Door are arguably the 2 most erotic and hot films ever shot, imo because everyone wanted to be there.
Sasha Grey, Dani Daniels and Riley Reid come to mind as acting in their scenes. I never get the feeling they are really present all the way, in the moment.
Bobbi Starr, Remy LaCroix, Harmony Rose, Poppy Morgan, I never get the feeling they are acting, and I'd consider them close to golden era performers.
Also, while it may be more visually explicit, lack of pubic hair makes it less erotic. While the overall availability of porn really hurt Playboy, the lack of eroticism and over use of airbrushing hurt just as much.
Yeah, the girls were beautiful to look at, but they weren't hot and erotic anymore.

What I find so frustrating is there is clearly a market it for it.
Yeah Ginger Lynn on Dave's Old Porn, Dave Attell is a legend check out his CD Skanks for the Memories, was saying how much she enjoyed the longer shoots and establishing feelings instead of today's wham bam thank you mam, and both her and Joe Rogan were confused as to why there is so much anger in today's porn.
I actually liked Sasha's dirty talk and over acting as weirdly kind of suited her in some scenes if she didn't go too over the top, Dani Daniels on the other hand was a huge disappointment after seeing her scenes for the first time after loving her solo vids, one of the most beautiful but some of the worst most blatant acting :(
I love the look of bush, Bring back bush, and agree does give a more sensual feminine look, and still love the old Playboy pics, more sensual, provocative and natural look with tanlines and full blush.
