Very cool! how do you pull focus on it though? it's really hard to pull focus on stuff on DSLRs because the depth of field is so shallow at smaller f/stops. Even with the 3" LCD screen it's still hard to tell if what you want to be in focus is in focus. Just curious. And thanks the heads up on the Money Talks site. Do you film for it too, or is that someone else? I'm completely awestruck with this whole concept of filming good HD stuff on a DSLR. It makes me happy. haha.
Chode- well I set my camera up where I don't need to really pull focus. Sometimes I use a Marshall monitor for peaking but for the most part I don't pull a ton of focus and if I do I just use my hand. I use the h4n or a h1n depending on where I am shooting. As for moneytalks.com that is a 2 camera shoot always and I have a great cam b operator for it. Check out Jenna hazes trailer for her new movie legs up hose down over at Julesjordanvideo.com you can see the clips shot with the dslrs
How is the T2i?? I have one and got it not for video but for capture off video the way fashion photographers use the Red. I like it a lot but find the lack of autofocus for video frustrating. You can refocus during taking a video by pressing the shutter button half way but the screen lights up and the sound of the lens focusing is recorded. I would like to know what compromises you suffer with the T2i compared with the professional models. Seems much smaller and lighter which is good.
Taking pics and shooting high quality porn all in one is quite cool I was looking at one a few months back here I thought it was a bit of a wierd feeling though for me I guess in the end if your happy with the final product is what counts Edited by - LexRated on 11/7/2010 3:19:07 AM
I'm liking it so far. I've only got to use it for video on one occasion and that was for a wedding. It takes a little getting used to, but I was pretty satisfied with it. You have to have the camera on manual focusing and just control it by hand. It gets difficult if you want to change the focus a lot or if you're compensating for things moving closer or farther away from you. It's hard too, even with the 3" LCD screen, to make sure everything is in focus that you want to be. They have tons of LCD Viewfinder hoods/magnifiers though which help out a lot. I got the Hoodman Cinema Kit that I talked about above for $209 from Adorama, I believe. It's got a 3x magnifier on the LCD hood. That helps out a lot. Nikon is coming out with a model that has autofocus for the video I think. I saw something about it in a magazine about a month ago but I didn't buy the magazine so I didn't read about it or anything. Not sure exactly how that will work and how you'll control the autofocus, but it's an interesting idea at least. I'm sure more companies will jump on that soon. As for the compromises with the T2i, I'm not 100% sure. I know it's not as good as a 7D, but in all the reviews in magazines and online that I've read it's pretty comparable to it, feature-wise. The T2i body isn't weathersealed and is made out of plastic, where as the 7D's is made out of metal (I believe) and is weathersealed. It's no 7D or 5D Mark II, obviously, but for the price it's a really good camera. I'm glad I got it. Can you explain what you meant about capturing off video the way fashion photographers use the Red? I'm not really sure what you're talking about but I'm interested in finding out! haha.

One of the main reasons the camera is so popular is because you can treat it like a flim camera. You can pull focus, you can switch out lenses for different depth of field. Having autofocus would be kinda pointless, not to mention nearly impossible because the short depth of field would send any auto focus sensor into a panic.
Exactly. One of the attractive things about shooting vids on DSLRs is the amazingly short depth of field that you can get with large aperture (fast) lenses that you can't get with movie/video cameras. Canon makes a f/1.2 lens that I would LOVE to play with, but that thing is like $1400, so that's waaay out of my league, monetarily. The largest aperture lens I've got is a 50mm f/1.8, so that'll do for now. Canon makes a f/1.4 for about $300 but I can't really spend that much on a lens right now. Too many other things that are more important at the moment.
Chode.- I have some L series lenses but I actually have the 50mm 1.4 and it is a awesome lens for the price, I would say when you are able to get it you will not be sorry you did. Also here is 1 of 3 music videos I had shot for Murs feat. Roxy Reynolds around dec of 2008 when the 5D Mark II first came out. This was before all the manual controls were available for the camera. ^ very cool man! I loved the skating vids. We used to film ourselves skating on old school VHS cameras or mini-VHS cams. Horrible, horrible quality but those were the days. Thanks for the link Van!
Van, just to follow up, I saw LUHD and while the imagery is slightly better from her previous movies...the movements were decent but the movie gave off a "filmy", almost compressed look which I really don't care for. So overall I must say I still prefer her previous work. But it is the first time using this, so I'm still interested in seeing how future releases look.

^ I agree completely, except I would just plainly descrbie LUHD as presented in low resolution. But I do not know whether it was the camera or some treatment given to the video after it was shot, and was therefore intentional. Perhaps that almost fuzzy view it was is preferred by those who prefer to see leggings instead of legs. However I was cool with the stockings going in. But with the perfect array of A's and B's as presented by Marie Luv, Lily LaBeau, Jenna Haze and Zoe Voss, I should have been able to feel the electrification of erect nipples, but I could barely see if the nipples were erect. Regardless, I was looking for better picture quality than the marginal quality of SB2. Having said that, the Marie Luv scene featured shots which highlighted her overall form and great chemistry with Mark Ashley, making LUHD worth a purchase. I would have loved the Lily LaBeau scene too if it was not for the technical aspects. Edited by - bootymeister on 11/23/2010 9:19:48 PM
^Dude, thank you!!! I'm going crazy trying to figure out why no one else sees what I see. I've posted something on this in the Jenna Haze thread if you want to add anything there. Have you seen Young and Glamourous 2? Chris Streams pretty much uses the intentional soft effect I think you were referring to...but his video quality is solid and stable throughout.

Actually, I was going to mention "Young and Glamourous 2" in my previous post. Although I did not see it, I saw the trailer and noticed that it had a fariy tale look unlike the usual Chris Streams videos. I guess glamorous or artistic dictates low resolution. I was savvy enough to rent instead of purchase a G/G flick called "La Femme Lovers" distributed by Daring Media Group. It was a well done, artistic and seductive series of lesbians attired in fine lingerie. It was obvious that the video was shot in high resolution but was enhanced with what seemed like muted ligthing and airbrushing, so the movie was much less stimulating. What I found to be odd, in the DVD extras, the director boasted about his finished product by showing a series of original raw, high-resolution, vibrant short clips immediately followed by the 'enahnced' version of the same short clip. Needless to say I could not possibly make the purchase after seeing smaples of the true orginal vivid video. I suspect this is the norm for the Daring Media Group and pass over all of their stuff. lol. Don't you just hate it when the bts comes out crystal clear and the actual movie looks like crap? I remember the YG2 trailer, but that's just in the beginning of the scenes during the tease segments that look that extremely soft. The entire movie does have a slightly soft look to it (that I didn't mind at all), but I was still able to get a realistic feel to the picture which is very important to me at least. I liked it a lot. You should give it a rental, it's got a great cast. LUHD, I could see that during the teases they intentionally made it to look the way it did. But after the tease it still didn't give me the realistic feel I look for. I'm still thinking it's the camera. I think I did read somewhere it gives off a filmic look.
This is one of the rigs I use with the 5D: It stabilizes it and makes it so you can pull focus smoothly. You can also mark on the focus wheel your focus points that you want to move from and to, especially if your doing some sort of dialogue sequence. Something along this line that I recently shot:
Very cool Kevin. That's a Zacuto rig, right? Those are like close to $1,000. If I had the cash I'd definitely buy one. That's pretty neat that you can mark your focus on there. That'd come in real handy for filmmaking. I haven't done any more filming lately. Nothing interesting to film around here. I filmed about 6 rolls of Super 8 footage for a class project that I need to ship off and get developed. I asked my Film Professor if I could just do it on my DSLR and he told me no. Haha.
Also, what was the aperture on that shot you posted of Julia Ann and about how far apart were you? Shallow focus is so fucking sweet. I've got a 1.8 50mm and wanna get a 1.4, but again, cash is standing in the way.
Ok...news: I just ordered a Follow Focus kit for my T2i. It's the D Focus kit. I also ordered one gear and the D Mount. With shipping it came out to $236, which isn't bad at all. I've read good stuff about this system and it's way cheaper than a Redrock/etc, so that's awesome as well. My film buddy from school that's working in Austin now recently got one and he was raving about it, so that naturally made me want to get one. Should come in in about 2 weeks, so I'm psyched! Has anything new happened in the Porn/DSLR world? This thread was pretty active for a while then kinda died. Mike...Van...Kevin...Gary? Anything going on with you using DSLRs to film some good ol' fashion fucking? Any info is appreciated. :)
Forgot to ask this as well: Does anyone know if Daring Media Group uses DSLRs to shoot their films? The trailers I've seen of their stuff is SUPERB from a film making standpoint and looks very 'DSLR-y'. Just curious if anyone knows. Thanks.
Hi there I have shot two movies for Daring Media on DSLR's The latest of these movies "The Informers" trailer can be seen here. http://daringmediagroup.com/trailers We shoot on 3 DSLR's and cut between them. We usually use 85, 35, 50 and 24mm primes and a few additional telephotos. Shooting adult content is pretty tricky both at the point of production and post but nice for that classic cinematic look.
Thanks for the info Will, and welcome to the forum. I watched the trailer for Informers and thought that it was very nice and looked good. What other movie have you done for Daring where you used DSLRs? Also, what camera did you use on Informers? Thanks.
The other title that I shot for Daring Media on DSLR's was "Limousine" I'm pretty sure that Kendo also uses DSLR's in his productions for Daring too. His work looks excellent! The setup for "The Informers" was; 3 Canon 5D MII - Usually one 35 (establishing shot) one 85 for Headshots and a 70 - 200 for Variation. Porn is pretty tricky in my opinion to shoot with a fixed DSLR, so I tend to shot 3 angles and cut between them. I encourage the performers to just deliver the scene. The Daring style content does not require any direct camera eye contact from the performers and that is a massive factor as well. (you can cut to the best angle without having to consider eye contact in the edit) Under lights I clamp the cameras at 3200K so the colors are balanced and shoot in neutral mode. Obviously the canon audio is about as bad as you can get so all the audio is recorded separately and synced in post. With care you can get an excellent film style look. The Downsides in my opinion are: 1) On wide (non shallow Depth of field shots) the sensor can sometimes go crazy and deliver random wild artefacts in the footage. 2) I would not attempt work off tripod as rolling shutter is unavoidable. 3) You have to use audio recorded from a separate source. (a little tip here: use pluraleyes to sync up the audio and footage)
Awesome. Thanks for the tips and info Will. I'm aware of the horrid sound quality that DSLRs pick up with their built in mics, so I plan on getting a Zoom h4n soon for audio. My film buddy also recommended Pluraleyes for syncing audio and video. His day job is working for a wedding filming business and they'll have 4 or 5 separate cameras capturing footage simultaneously, so they use that to sync the audio to all of the video that they have. It seems to be a very useful tool. Do you have anything else in the works that you're going to shoot with DSLRs?
You don't need Pluraleyes. You just need a slate; a much cheaper solution and one that has worked for the 80 years since movies added sound. Also, for non-critcal audio (moans and groans), an XLR to mini adapter will give you acceptable results as long as you are using a good mic.

I agree with Quasar. Use a simple marker then post sync. You don't need a time code slate or any fancy post software. Studio Depot (Hollywood) or Filmtools (Burbank)sell great professional slates. And if you can get a field recorder that has XLR inputs... highly recommended. The XLR to mini adapters are prone to problems especially in the mini jack on the cheaper recorders.
So slates are basically the clap boards that you always see used before scenes start? Zoom h4n's are pretty popular from what I've read/seen. Skronker has already said in this thread that he uses them for interviews. I need to get one, but I've got tuition that's due next week and I'm waiting for a grant to get approved, so I've gotta wait till after all that's ironed out before I'm gonna order it. I'm jonesing for it though! :)
Just for my use in audio interviews the Zoom is killer. Sucks up the little batteries like M&Ms. But you can't beat the quality. They sell a cheaper model, too.
Just get a bunch of rechargeables and it's all good. They have a cheaper version, but the h4n is supposed to be fucking awesome. When did you start using one Skronk?
I use the zoom H4N great piece of equipment, I also use the zoom H1 as well at times. I never used a slate but I am a big fan of plural eyes, we use this software on when editing for www.moneytalks.com as well as the stuff I shoot for Jenna Haze. Syncs all the audio w/video up perfectly. Also chode... this isn't porn related but I just shot another video for the Group Melrose which consists of Murs and Terrace Martin (producer for Snoop Dogg) and being you are into dslr figured you might be interested in checking it out, just went live yesterday...
Another question for the pros: Editing-wise, do you use Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere CS5 for editing? I'm a hardcore Apple guy but seeing/reading some stuff about Premiere I'm starting to question my faith in Apple. Premiere accepts the h.264 codec where FC doesn't. (I use Final Cut Express personally, but even Pro/Studio doesn't accept h.264 files). What I have to do is use Handbrake to 'reconvert' the file to a .mov file and THEN import it into FC to work on it. So it goes from a .mov to a .mov file so FC can handle it. Seeing as Canon's DSLR footage comes out with that codec, this is an important issue when doing DSLR filming. What do you guys use to edit the files, or what do you have to prep your files to edit? Also, isn't color correction easier in Premiere also? I'm interested in what you guys do. Call me out if I made any tech mistakes in the above paragraph as well. Thanks.
Badass! I think you and I have talked about this before actually before I bought my T2i. BUY IT!! It's well worth it. :) What titles or site stuff have you done with the T2i? Or was it personal stuff?
The people have spoken. I'm a nitpicking dick. Woo! 8754 Posts 1/04

@ChodeMasterJ - did you see Apple lowered the price of Aperture to $80 if bought in the App Store. Maybe a drop in the Final Cut price is in the offing as well?
