Webcam gals I would consider to be erotica. Non-intercourse.
Some gals do photo shoots nude, some explicit and some tasteful or erotic.
If they do solo vids and sell them on their camsite, blog, or website, it isn't widely distributed, you won't find that fare in adult or video rental stores.
Some strippers sell videos of themselves, that too is erotica. Some gals will do skype shows, also erotica.
Some websites allow intercourse, a gal might do her boyfriend, husband, or a swingers type thing with a few men and maybe a few women. Sometimes they sell videos We're getting a lot closer to porn star now.
The amateur videos sold through limited venues might be getting there too.
Real porn is actors/actresses hired to perform sex acts filmed by professionals that distribute worldwide or at least widely in an area (Japan is restrictive.)

Yeah, true but something I have noticed watching cam girls now is that some kinda make it seem they look down on porn stars. Like some say they could never be a porn star or would never do porn, but then do a cum show with 500 on up to 5000 viewers. Main difference is it's (usually) totally solo. In a way it requires "more" skills to be a cam performer because she has to keep the viewer entertained all by herself, without the benefit of a male co-performer or a director help keep the action going, and she has to do her own marketing/promotion and make her own decision about what/how to do each session, which sex acts to do, and she has to take care about the technical things such as camera position and body position to show the action properly, etc. I've seen some very famous pornstars fail miserably at doing solo scenes or fetish scenes.[Link] |

I agree with the OP, especially in the sense that a lot of the most popular/famous cam girls aren't just solo acts, and do sell videos of themselves doing g/g or b/g scenes directly. I do consider a cam girl to be part of the "adult industry" in general, so if they become popular enough, I have no problem with calling them porn stars.[Link] |

Some cam gals, Virgo Peridot and Krystal Orchid to name a couple, have done porn shoots. Some porn stars try camming when they're tired of the porn scene, I saw Nina Hartley on Streammate and a few others but it doesn't work out well for them.
Some strippers look down on ladies that visit nude beaches and some ladies that visit nude beaches can and do look down at strippers. Sometimes they're both. Some gals who visit nudist camps look down on gals who visit nude beaches and vice-versa--go figure. (I've done both.)
The major difference AFAICS is a webcam gal does so in the privacy of her own home. A stripper performs in front of men at strip clubs (I refuse to call them Gentlemen's Clubs.) The stripper has at least a little contact with men, the webcam gal can talk to the men viewing her and watch their cams in a two-way sort of thing but she's at home unless she takes her cam and computer 'on location.' Some Euro porn gals do escorting, they'll engage in full-blown sex with fans more as call girls instead of being trapped in a brothel. Some American porn stars have done stints at the Nevada brothels and more than a few will do prostitution/escorting.
Some gals will dance at a strip club, some topless, some nude a time or two on 'Amateur Night' to get a feel for things, act out their exhibitionist impulses, make a few bucks , see how it goes, some are done, some like it and become strippers.
It all gets lumped into the 'adult' world with it's different facets.
