We've all heard the stories about how piracy has hurt the industry and such. It got me thinking the other day, "what if the industry was no more?"
Say the commercial industry for porn was gone, would porn still exist? Would people make their own? Today we have all of these tube sites that are intended for amateur porn, though there isn't a whole lot of truly amateur stuff on them. Mostly German if any ;). But if there were no industry, would the people make their own? Would it be better or worse than what the industry gives us?
Personally, I could go for a whole lot more amateur stuff that what's out there. I enjoy it. In a way, I kind of think porn would be better if it were all for the people, by the people. Just my opinion.

ABSOLUTELY. People who have a clue about how to light their sex and capture it well would be very nice. Modern cameras and the internet give me hope. I would so much rather give my money directly to a competent couple pulling all strings than give another dime to the industry with their monstrous castles and swimming pools.

No, because having videos of yourself having sex publicly available is a huge hit to your persona and only properly compensated with money. Proper lighting, action and scenes require people with experience who know what they're doing, i.e. professionals.
The vast majority of amateur porn showing faces (mostly the girl's) is released to the internet without the consent of those who are identifiable. Most people don't want to watch porn without faces.
Most amateurs have neither the ability nor the looks to satisfy most current customers.
Porn already is "for the people, by the people", it just costs money to produce and people need to live on something. That's what free trade is for. The quality value of most amateur porn is equal to the amount of money used to produce it - next to nothing.

The most "professional" pornographers really aren't that good at capturing the female body in a glorious capacity. The simplest and most basic fundamentals of camera and lighting operation are sorely lacking in the industry, like knowing to close the blinds when the sun is beaming through the window directly behind your subject and into the camera. I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging but I can deliver a way more clear, colorful, and well composed video than the majority of "professionals". The amateurs do suck really really bad at capturing good material, but at least they're not doing it on purpose. Some of the best porn I've ever seen is shot at home. Black on Filipina anal action...EVEN.
One of the best examples of a production company that REALLY understands the concept of lighting is KICK ASS PRODUCTIONS. Their technique consisted of a black room with perfect lighting upon women smoking cigarettes and showing off their pretty pedicured toes. Perfect filmography with no hardcore....by design.

I think the demise of the industry would be a disaster for porn. The industry does one thing very well that you would never be able to count on from random amateurs - age verification. It's peace of mind. I don't have to worry when I buy a movie from a well known, established studio. They take care of the age verification. There's nothing to guarantee the age on an amateur piece that some random person made and threw on the web. That scares the fuck out of me and I won't go near it. With the laws being what they are and people having their lives destroyed over pictures, we need age verification. I just don't see how possibly as many as tens of thousands of amateurs could do any kind of system that works as well as the one the industry uses without sinking money into it and organizing things into some kind of coherent structure.

Hey Mike you may not have a castle with a huge pool but I've got one and my pool is really huge. It's out in Utah and we call it "Lake Powell". :) All kidding aside, you could probably count on two hands the amount of industry guys living in castles and you might find quite a few living in their cars, everyone else is right there in the middle just like everyone else in America.

I do apologize for painting so many with such a wide brush.
If there is a will there is a way. The governments of the world know every detail about every citizen with a number. Don't let them fool you. It would be very simple for me to go down to an office with my woman, have them scan our biometric ID cards recently introduced into the fold (which will eventually be the microchip in our wrists), take a DNA sample, and sign off on the papers. Then the fucking and filming begins. If there is demand, we get paid, the government gets it's cut, and the people can get what they want. If you don't want to follow the rules and pay your taxes, you pay the penalty.
Porn producers are basically just legalized pimps that filter what gets made and what doesn't. I'm not pleased with the direction it is going. I think it would be awesome to have more of a direct effect with the money willing to be spent. Imagine for the first time ever ....a fulfilled request for black women in nothing but sheer nude thigh high stockings doing RCA without impunity. Captured from head to reinforced toes. Now that would be real change.

Since when does the average Joe go around bragging about what porn he saw and who he saw in it? The bottom line is, in my opinion, anyone who knows who did what, has obviously looked up porn if they were to verify it. It's only as publicly available as going to a porn site tacking it down. Of course, it would be more anonymous if there were more amateur porn out there, one particular scene would be harder to find amongst many. But as it stand right now, I could probably pick the few girls out of a crowd that I've actually seen in amateur videos. There's just not enough of them.
This part is more debatable. The quality and low budget/no budget production values that go into making most amateur films is what I find appealing, because it feels realistic. I have a hard time believing that people in mainstream porn live in the same world as I do. I'm the same way about mainstream Hollywood films, I dislike fakeness, and don't care so much for "professionals" that are getting paid such high dollar to "do it right", imho, they're aren't doing it right, I prefer indie films.
Last time I checked, most mainstream doesn't exactly spend a lot of time focusing on the guy's face either, it's mostly the girl, so I don't see how that is different. I've never seen an amateur film where no faces were shown. Really you have no way to know if both parties consented to posting it on the net. But that's kind of how it is now anyway, not a good idea to shoot an amateur film with someone you'll later break up with or piss off.
And of course, you're entitled to your own opinion. But again, I they think they do have the looks and the ability, because what I dislike about manufactured porn is the total lack of realism. Dressing women up like perfect dolls isn't real, and it's doesn't much appeal to me. I know plenty of ordinary girls who damn sexy, good looking women are not exclusive to porn.

I see what you mean.
I'm merely saying that licensing for porn should be easy if said participants legally qualify. Taxes get paid and participants profit without so much overhead.
The present porn producers are more like filterers than anything. The same people shooting the same things gets old after a couple decades. I see the present system as Anton Lavey termed it, a "conspiracy of ineptitude". The good old boys want to keep their jobs because it's easy money.
I would rather see amateurs taking requests utilizing better cameras and lighting.

Prostitution is still illegal in the US and no one is ready to legalize it on a wide scale basis. Matter of fact Rhode Island just closed a loop hole in their prostitution laws that allowed it to be legal as long as it was "indoors." Go figure...
Either way, the reason why you will never see the industry go away is that amatuer porn usually equals prostitution ... a guy with a camera paying a girl to have sex with him as he films it.
LE would go crazy trying to enforce prostitution/pandering/solictation laws if amateur porn became widespread. It may even cause a backlash against porn. With the industry producing most of the porn, it keeps prostitution out of many bedroom communities. Porn is like prisons, everybody wants it - they just dont want it in their backyard.
Even people here in the Valley go nuts if they live next to a shoot house. I had several clients busted for shooting without permits.

The porn "industry" doesn't really exist to begin with. What exists are a number of independent competing entrepeneurs making and distributing porn to us, their customer base.
Industries typically band together to promote their common interests. The Health Care Industry is a current example. It, like every other product manufacturer or service provider, maintains a professional organization that lobbies for its own welfare, publishes data on its markets and sales, provides services to help its members, etc.
Nothing like this exists in porn, to my knowledge. No one, for example, knows for certain, how much porn is sold in the U.S., how many are employed making it. No one can even come up with a comprehensive list of porn companies.
No one can be blamed for this, although I personally think that creating a real porn industry that works together for its common interests would as HUGELY benefit it as it has every other industry in the world.
Porn is uniquely legal AND illegal at the same time, what, by its ubiquity, most people have or have enjoyed, but most people will deny having or enjoying and so on.
It has been in existence probably as long as mankind itself has and having opened the Pandora's box of general public sales of porn, we could not close that box again if we wanted to.

Unless you call it POV.
And I'm not sure that's the primary reason the industry won't go away, I think the main reason is because it will continue to be highly profitable for the foreseeable future.

Profit is not the cause of porn; it's the effect.
The cause is the peculiarly human need for sex apart from procreation. We are the only known species that has sex for pleasure, although I personally suspect there are others. Porn is our response to our need for sexual release far more frquently than most of us can find actual partners to fullfill that need, as well as our natural need for variety and newness to keep us satisfied.
There'd be porn if no one made a dime from it. There just wouldn't be anyone in "the porn business".

I guess this is the part where everyone shouts "Bonobo!" in unison. Plus my understanding is that sexual play for various reasons other than reproduction is not exactly rare in other species.

As I said, my own opinion is that you are right that there are many species that pursue sex for pleasure. However, humans are the only species definitely KNOWN to do so, and until we can reliably detect the sentience of other species,i.e. read their minds, our knowledge can only be what they do, not why they do it.
I suspect, for example, that roosters indulge in sex for pleasure. I have chickens and they fuck a WHOLE LOT more than they need to or than hens like them to, and way more than needed to keep eggs fertile.

LMAO..... yeah see the big pretty mansion on the corner? Yeah I live in their pool house.
I shoot amateurs for a company. It does well but If that was the only porn left to enjoy that would suck. I like to see the pro stuff, if its done right its awesome. Even the little details like the lighting and the outfits etc can be a treat. Amateur porn is nice and to the point... and the bad lighting and shaky camera makes it really hot when you're in the mood for that. But just like anything else I like variety. If I only could watch one or the other I'd feel incomplete ;( lol

I don't know about dogs as a species, but there is an interesting free video at kink.com about their two dogs, and it shows them fucking or sniffing each other's butts almost constantly all that day. Contrast that to the kink.com cats (there are three) where they sit on their perch most of the day and sleep -- and do their mousing at night. While mousing, a cat will make its way into a set and walk across the room from time to time if they are filming late into the night. Lochai called one "the wrong pussy" once during a Casting Couch shoot.

Your rhetorical style is kind of slippery. Earlier you referred to a "peculiarly human need for sex apart from procreation" which perhaps isn't so peculiarly human after all, but now you seem to resort to excessively restrictive definitions of "knowing" and "pleasure". We don't really "definitely know" the minds of even other humans if we want to get that philosophical.
Apparently there are known instances of animals (mainly primates) trading sex for other kinds of favours, i.e prostitution. Humans are probably the only species to have created pornography, though. Maybe sex toys too.
But this very much off topic. I don't really have anything useful to say to this topic. In some ways the idea of independent porn creation sounds attractive, but there are practical issues: how to keep things legal and civilized, for one thing. And it would mean the end of big productions. I guess I would like to have some kind of industry along with an indie scene.

That's a valid point. Questions of 'knowing' and what we may infer from observation ARE very slippery. But humans communicate among themselves and, notwithstanding that they also lie to one another, are often mistaken or misled, and typically hide themselves from others, that communication in all its forms is what we must rely on. Relying on it has accounted for pretty much all the fuck ups, large and small, of our history, and it certainly keeps the divorce courts hopping.
With animals, all we can do is observe and infer. It's why I have, for example, a lot more respect for my Vet than I do for my doctor. Time and again he correctly diagnoses and treats creatures that can't even tell him where it hurts, while doctors, these days, won't tell you what color your eyes are without running a dozen tests first.
Anyway, like I've said, the notion that we are the only species that fucks for pleasure is the conventional wisdom only, and I, like others here who have resonded to that, suspect that's not so. Still, we ARE the only species that we can be can be certain is so devoted -- anatomically, physiologically, and spiritually -- to sex for pleasure.
It's somewhat dated, now, I suppose, but Desmond Morris' "The Naked Ape" still does a fair job arguing just HOW devoted everything about us is devoted to enjoying sex.

I started doing video myself like a year ago. Only amateur stuff though, I'm not good enough for pro stuff yet, still a bit shaky LOL. I did direct my own pro DVD "Kelly's Black Book" after I was in the business for like 6 months. I wanna direct another pro movie so bad but I haven't gotten it together at all yet.

Under the heading 'Never Gonna Happen' but the hardcore ADTer's could pool resources and form their own 'ADT Productions', making porn that incorporated the qualities that a concensus of fans here want to see in porn.

What people seem to not realize is that in most "professionally" shot porn, there is a level of skill, knowldege and equiptment that far surpasses what most "amatures" out there are, or would be, able to produce. This doesn't mean that there isn't "professional" porn that isn't crap (for a meriad of reasons) or some amature stuff that can't be suprisingly good.
A non porn example: even the people who work on producing some cheap local Saturday morning show are still 100 times more talented than you average amature. What keeps any perceived production values down, most of the time, is the budget behind it, not the lack of talent. Imagine the porn you could produce if you shot for 16 hours just to get 70 seconds of usable footage?? FYI.. That's a typical Hollywood ratio for a movie. An entire day of shooting for one minute of usable footage. Bit you see how much that would cost.
Porn is the same way. Were not talking Hollywood budgets here.. So even the most ambitios porn.. Is still relativly low budget. They may not be using Low end consumer level equipment, but neither are they using $80k cameras either. But just some decent lighting can make all the difference in the world. Something that's usually the first big problem with a vast majority of amature porn.
And production wise.. There is a huge quality gap between even modest professional porn and amature porn.
If there were no professional porn.. To see what we would have would be like YouTube. With low cheap cameras, inexpensive software, and stock music sites... Anyone can create content. But are you willing to give up on professionally created shows, movies? I think not. Yes... Occasionally there are some amature videos on YouTube that are worth checking out, but for every video that's worth watching, there's probably 10,000 that are garbage. And the few that are worth watching, half of those still have poor quality production... Only something in the content was interesting.. But would have been 100 times better with better
quality production.
I know some guys get off on something about the "amature" could be the girl next door aspect of amature porn... But let's not let the professional stuff die... I would hate to be left with only amature stuff.

I was at a party the other day and someone was taking a picture of someone in front of a window. Somebody said "hey, move over so you're not in front of that bright window". I thought to myself, holy shit...if only the porn industry was half as smart as that person.
Fact is, I would rather give my money to a site like assteenmouth.com mainly because they use a room with no windows. This means no glorious light flooding their backgrounds and showing off recent purchases of home decor. They have one guy doing one girl, decent lighting, and a decent camera which puts out decent resolution. The girls are hot and willing but unfortunately for me, these girls never, ever, ever wear sheer stockings. Sometimes they even wear tennis shoes in bed...WTF. Eventually an amateur will figure it out.
It's not that complicated.

The very thought of nothing but am porn makes me shudder. There is nothing wrong with a good healthy porn industry. Sure beats the mainstream world which is so PC and censored now that I can barely watch any major release these days. Talk about white bread. Hollywood (driven by advertisers and special interest groups) has lost its balls.
Long live movies, videos, whatever for ADULTS... amateur, pro-am, professional, I say let it all live. Diversity in nature is good!

Hollywood, just like the political arena, is a cult. The porn industry is the same. The logos they use will verify this. How many pyramids, left eyes, swastika patterns, suns, and pentagrams can you find? The media is thoroughly drenched by global elitists who do not share my vision, but their vision....a boot stamping on a human face, forever.
Amateurs are ignorant to the agenda, and that is their strength.

The essence of paranoia is the belief that one is important enough for others to bother with. The quality common to every paranoid delusion is that one person sees the truth that all others around him do not see. Paranoia is a kind of conciet.
The plain fact of the matter is that the powerful of this world do not require hidden agendas and mystical symbolism and other forms of subterfuge to exert contol of the powerless. They do so and have done so openly and arrogantly since the day the first caveman showed up with a bigger club than everybody else.
It's always been comforting for us to believe that we need to be tricked and secretly manipulated by those with real influence and power; that we're the smart ones and can see through their tricks; WE'RE the ones with the power. That's the real delusion.

The statement you just made allows the type of unseen hand to exist without resistance. Would you call Jesse Ventura (ex Navy Seal and former governor of Minnesota)a paranoid? I understand what you are trying to say, but the depth of the layers behind that which I speak is so very deep, the center of it's gravity is never revealed. The blame is always shifted to these people or those people, Christians vs. Muslims, Jewish vs. Nazis, it's all the same shit to them.
Do you really believe that all these companies use the esoteric symbolism they do out of coincidence? The information on this "conspiracy" is extremely well documented, the cat has been out of the bag, people who want to know the truth have only to take the blinders off. If you can't see the radio waves in the air, it doesn't mean these waves don't exist. When you turn the radio on things start to make sense.
Pornography is only a small aspect of what I refer to in this "conspiracy". The controlling powers realized a long time ago that controlling the media was one of the most important aspects of control. Instead of just killing people outright, they decided to take over our minds. Why do you think they call them TV "programs". It has something to do with programming. Porn is pushing way more garbage than erotica. Television doesn't educate, it hypnotizes and stupefies.

Mike Quasar, it's totally cool. Your right to think I'm ridiculous is what I love about this country. As far as laughing at me or disliking me, I'm more than willing to accept it either way. As the future unfolds, we will see who was right or wrong.
Back to the porn, I put my money on independent contractors with websites. Especially well hung black men with dirty Asian girlfriends. I hope you're listening. I'm standing by with my debit card in hand.

We have the internet and that make an industry superfluous. Before the net when the industry was all we had, 1985-1995, what did it give us? Synthetic people acting their way through simulated sex scenes. Nothing authentic. No BBW genere, No Mature, No big butts, no ethnic just endless skinny blondes with big fake boob. The industry has yet to delivery the very thing it owes its exsitence to... sex. Porn requires different nomenclature, different camera techniques, performance requires a whole different skill set. The industry produces porn.

I don't see how this refutes my point. No reasonably sane person wants to have content of them in a sexual situation available on the net, unless they are already living a somewhat fringe lifestyle. I don't think this is even debatable. There are plenty of ways in which this can have a negative effect on one's life, the details of which aren't really relevant.
Of course not. You can always argue that it's the person's fault for trusting someone, but I don't think that porn which is entirely based on criminal action is a reasonable substitute for professional porn.
Maybe you are just watching the wrong kind of professional porn if it does not appeal to you?

With all due respect, by the looks of the new releases out there, I see the choices are the slimmest they've ever been. All I see is blow jobs, big boobs, fat women, gay, lesbian, transsexual, incest, and pitiful straight porn. This "professional" industry just needs to be put out of it's misery. Seriously.
Combat Zone....Oh my God, who are these people fighting? The porn viewer?
If you're not a Jay Sin, Jonni Darkko, or L.T. fan....you're fucked I guess.

Of course you do not see it, but your statement VERIFIES the very thing it is at pains to refute.
Of course it is true that the wealthy and powerful manipulate others to retain wealth and power. When has it been otherwise? You know it and I know it, and the wealthy and powerful KNOW that we know it.
Why bother with arcane symbols and strange rituals and secret societies to obfuscate something that's as plain as a pikestaff anyway? All that stuff does is enrich the swindlers like Icke who use it to convince their audience that he provides YOU with some power over THEM that makes YOU smarter or more powerful yourself.
Go ahead and enjoy yourself. If believing the moon is a spaceship of the aliens that control us or are going to eat us or whatever gives you comfort, far be it from me to cast any doubt. If the moon IS a spaceship, what exactly do you or Icke propose knowing that is going to do for us?
What I fear for your sake is that the idea that you live amid a vast conspiracy to do you harm is DOING you far more harm than ANY actual conspiracy could ever do.
I have worked with many who think as you appear to think, and I have much experience to believe that you are heading for a life of nothing but distrust and fear and terror and panic; a world emptied of the beauties and pleasure and self respect and love and intellect that no conspiracy, no manipulation by the wealthy and powerful can ever touch. All that CAN affect the stuff that REALLY makes life more that a pointless few decades of toil and trouble, is your own conviction that powerful secret enemies are out to get you.

^ Is there some particular reason why we're discussing this in The Porn Pool? I think it would be an awesome discussion in the right context but I'm reluctant to get involved as long as it's off topic.

I think MOST discussions in this forum tend to vere off topic now and again, don't they? You sort of come to expect it after awhile, and there isn't a whole lot you can do about it, I don't think.
I've seen mods lock threads because of it, and of course efforts like your own to get things back on topic, which are fine.
Perhaps mods ought to have the option to move off topic responses into a thread of their own in cases where the different topic threatens to hijack the original subject.

In other news, psychology degrees continue to make for a good career choice... Seriously though, given your boring obsession with seeing feet during RCA shots and a few other things, if that's the mental price I'd have to pay for attaining your level of wisdom and clarity about the true state of the world I think I prefer to remain clueless and have my world continue being run by the Illuminati actually.
Edit: In any case, I'm with duefuss on this. If the supposed conspiracy is really as vast and as powerful as it's claimed to be, you pretty much have to assume that dropping enough hints to draw in the paranoid subset of the population is part of the strategy. What better way to enfeeble people than to have them trap themselves voluntarily in a persistent bit of self-imposed tunnel vision where the existence of the conspiracy permeates every waking thought?

Jay Sin used to work for SINEPLEX, the material he produced there consisted of the same format to which I always refer. He is another gear in the machine that would not show feet during RCA, unless it was somehow made to be a sabotaged depiction. Joachim Kessef and a radically bent, non-penetrating penis come to mind. He came full circle back to the "eVIL eMPIRE". SINEPLEX recently changed it's name to EVOLUTIONPLEX and is sporting the Illuminati pyramid with the familiar eye as it's logo. But I'm sure it's yet another coincidence.
Look, I'm a freak....I know. I can't shut up about the lack of RCA scenes that include sexy toes in sheer hosiery on the legs. What can I say, if the industry wasn't constantly coming up with new and innovative ways of preventing it from surfacing, I wouldn't be so persistent in my stance against them and their fanaticism. Even Stevie Wonder can see they are galvanized in their opposition to that which I desire to see, while I am quite the opposite. If they really feel the need to continue the endeavor to which I have stated so often before, I regret to say that I wish the industry a quick death. Somehow, I will get exactly what I want, I already have....but I want more, and faster.
Concerning paranoia and fear, please,... spare me. I come on a forum and speak my honest opinion about what I see as my picture is posted right there. If I was paranoid or afraid, do you really think I would do that? Fear and anger are negative vibrations that devour the soul. I am a silly, happy, loving son of a bitch that loves to throw down a gauntlet at almost every opportunity. If anything, I appreciate the advice about peace of mind, but references to moon spaceships and psychologists are way off target.

This is one of the best threads I've ever read on ADT. Just the other day there was an article in the NY Times about the FCC closing the gap on regulating the internet(sounds like they're trying to tear a page out of the Chinese book of internet control!)
Before there was a porn industry there was a stag film industry. Stags films had been produced since the invention of motion pictures in the 1890s with much of the now lost product being made in South America for the European market. Much of the stag films were quite amateurish albeit in some cases made by professional moviemakers incognito as the technology back then demanded some expertise. Making porn was illegal(in the US anyway) at the time and one had to be 'clandestine' in producing erotica. Groucho noses, grotesque dark makeup abound in many stags to hide identity where as on the other hand some women were prostitutes who wore no makeup and were readily recognizable as a way of advertising their services indirectly through being in the films. As the stag film morphed into XXX there was a gradual process with a middle ground, 'the drive-in nudie-cutie movie', itself an extension of the Burlesque house tease popularised by the likes of Gypsy Rose Lee. After the sexual revolution there was no more need for the drive-in nudie or even the stag in it's purest form. The best elements of the drive-in(theatrical) and the stag(hardcore) were amalgamated into the porn chic era or what became XXX-Adult feature films in the early 70s. The point being that nothing was instantaneous, rather the end result of what we take for granted and enjoy today was a gradual process aided by changing social mores.
The internet, has been another phase of gradual change, technology that is, I don't know what social changes there are left. In the Golden Era(80s) porn stars were treated like Hollywood royalty for a while. That time is gone. Home video made producing porn cheap, think of the glut of XXX junk of the early-mid 1990s. And I don't mean amateur. Im talking about porn valley produced material. Some well known triple x actresses from the Golden Era just wont have anything to do with cheaply made porn. Today the little guy with his oh-so sophisticated camera can produce a homemade porno that can have the polished quality of Vivid or he's a hack, can make a porno with his sophisticated camera that looks like the worst 90s junk. The choice is up to him/her. The big leagues in the late 90s began to adapt some of the styling of the amateur ranks such as the popular POV style of bj which by nature of the positioning is a cost cutting postion favored by an amateur guy getting his shot in close-up himself thus he doesn't have to pay a cameraperson to lense the shot.
Some fans only want to view amateur made porn, they won't have nothing to do with porn valley material or high end product. They don't care about high production values or camera work so long as the scenes are viewable and the sex is carried out by people who seem like they are unpretentious about appearing on camera. An individual or a couple might want to view another random couple in a scene which may offer an aura of spontaneity. A seasoned porn actress & stud in a similar scene may render a more mechanical offering than spontaneous one.
It's important to remember that you can't paint with a broad brush in porn or pigeonhole the aspect of peoples' choices. There's too much material and there's something out there for everyone's taste.
