It would make an interresting discussion, but I'm pretty sure it has been discussed more than once in the past.

But porn stars are paid by a company, prostitutes by an individual. Porn stars are not therefore having sex with the thing that pays them, and are not therefore prostitutes...?
Irrelavant, both are being paid to have sex, it doesn't matter who pays them. Neither would perform the act for free.
I'm not saying this to be critical of anyone. I have nothing against either hookers nor porn stars, I love both. It's just that I make no distinction between the two.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'll take a crack at the question. The difference is that in prostitution money is given by one person so (s)he can use the other person's body for pleasure, while in porn, money is given to both persons for profit. Whether either performer derives any pleasure from the sex is beside the point.
From a personal point of view, there is an important difference: A prostitute would be interested in having sex with me , a porn star most likely would not.

There are other definitions that don't have to do with sex.

I would say that these definions also apply to porn stars.
Whether it's legal, tested, etc is irrelvant, after all, prostitution is legal in much of the world and porn is illegal in some parts. Bottom line, people are having sex for money, and it's all good.
Pornstars are creating a product. They are are indeed being paid to have sex, but, it is to make a video. Just the same as if Tom Cruise drives a car in a movie, he is not being "paid to drive a car"- it is part of the movie he is being paid to be a part of.
You don't illustrate your point. You just show that performing in porn is a subset (special case) of prostitution. The legal arguement - shows that lawyers can split hairs. Testing - was only done to keep government out. In some places where prostitution is legal, testing is mandatory. Also individual prostitutes have themselves tested. As recent events and Marc Wallace show, testing can be circumvented. Fear of physical harm - well some of this has to do with the level of prostitution you are talking about. Also it has to do with how legitamate/mainstream the pornographer is.

Too often your last sentence seems to be true. I think in an ideal world everyone involved in a scene should be satisfied equally without the fixation on the male talents pleasure. Your definition gets a bit shaky given the fact that some male talents/producers are only in the game to satisfy their own sexual desires that there is a camera going comes second for them. I won't look up the zillions of different definitions for 'prostitution' as imho the job 'pornstar' can easily be subsumed under the broader term 'prostitution' in almost all of them. However some talents (no I won't give you examples) think there is some kind of difference that makes them something better. Who cares let them talk. If you have what it takes to be a successful prostitute be proud of it!
BTW, I do think it can be a serious advantage if you enter the pornbiz with the sexual experience of a professional prostitute. Not only considering your erotic skills but also psychological you will likely face less problems than an eighteen year old newcumer.

I'm a little bit slow today but yes if you just pose for a camera you prostitute your body for the photographer and later the viewers of those pics. 2.) 100 % agreement with X-RAY regarding the "be proud about it, if you are good at your job" aspect.
3.) Can someone explain why this topic is so important that it comes up every other month? Is it the "romantic" approach that tries to convince people to believe porn is better than prostitution? Or what? I do not have a clue.
I think porn and prostitution are certainly viewed differently by most people.
Prostitution has got a more 'sleazy' reputation possibly due to the fact it is usually hidden away and often carried out illegally.
Porn however is very open (heavily advertised) and almost always legally made.
I don't know about 'romantic' but i think in many peoples eyes being a pornstar has a more glamorous ring to it than being a prostitute. Think... appearing on TV, appearing in glossy magazines, appearing on boxcovers, appearing in advertisements etc.....You basically become famous.

I know about this approach to the topic, but I still do not get it. This approach has a wrong starting point. Well, at least when it comes to EE girls (and those are the only ones I can talk about, because I neva met a PornStar who was not from one of the EE countries personally). EE ladies do not enter the biz to become famous or to be featured in glamour magazines and all. Money is the prime mover for them. And you know what? Most funnily those who find out later that working as a "real" prostitute is much safer (say: condoms), means far less stress (say: no dozens of people around, when you pretend to have some fun) and gets you more money, will stop working porn and do `escorting´ only.
So, why view something that is basically the same thing with different eyes? IMHO the world is not like "porn is good" and "prostitution is bad". Basically it almost is like one thing leads to the other.
If stardom and fame comes along with doing porn, I would say: Enjoy it. Generally this stardom does not last long. In porn you may be a star today but you will be forgotten tomorrow because new and fresh talents are knocking on the door to stardom. But OTOH I heard that lots of EE ladies really prefer the anonymity {<-- spelling?} of `escorting´ over the worldwide presentation of porn. Especially when they think about having a family later. Which is another aspect why most EE ladies do not really want to become famous pornstars......
Even Extreme Elitist ladies may recognize that achieving a certain amount of fame through porn movies can tremendously increase the rates you charge for your services in case you work outside the biz. This is not a good idea if you want to be sainted though. Neither being a pornstar nor being a prostitute will give you an advantage in the parents representative election for your kids class, on the other hand, who wants such an ungrateful job anyway?
