It would make an interresting discussion, but I'm pretty sure it has been discussed more than once in the past.

Etymology just has the answer >>>

pornographie, from pornographe, pornographer, from Late Greek pornographos, writing about prostitutes : porn, prostitute; see per-5 in Indo-European Roots + graphein, to write; see -graphy.

I think I recall Rob Black once saying that the only difference between porn and prostitution is a camera.

This has been discussed before. Porn stars and prostitutes are both paid to have sex. Yes, both are basically the same thing.

But porn stars are paid by a company, prostitutes by an individual. Porn stars are not therefore having sex with the thing that pays them, and are not therefore prostitutes...?

Irrelavant, both are being paid to have sex, it doesn't matter who pays them. Neither would perform the act for free.

I'm not saying this to be critical of anyone. I have nothing against either hookers nor porn stars, I love both. It's just that I make no distinction between the two.

Close, but not quite, else Microsoft could pay women to have sex with potential clients and it wouldn't constitute prostitution.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'll take a crack at the question. The difference is that in prostitution money is given by one person so (s)he can use the other person's body for pleasure, while in porn, money is given to both persons for profit. Whether either performer derives any pleasure from the sex is beside the point.

From a personal point of view, there is an important difference: A prostitute would be interested in having sex with me , a porn star most likely would not.

here's $0.02 worth from a newbie..take it for what it's worth...

The similarities between porn and prostitution begins and ends with money for sexual acts. After that...it's like comparing apples and oragnes.

To illustrate my point...

Porn = legal in CA
Prostitution = uh...no

Porn = participants are tested for HIV
Prostitution = uh...no

Porn = Almost no fear of physical harm
Prostitution = uh...no

That's just a few off the top of my head anyway.

I hope this adds some light on the subject.

Also definitions from the dictionary

Prostitute(1)to offer for sexual intercourse for money

Prostitute (2)A woman or man who engages in sexual intercourse for money

There are other definitions that don't have to do with sex.

Prostitution-The act or practice of engaging in sexual intercourse for money.

I would say that these definions also apply to porn stars.

Whether it's legal, tested, etc is irrelvant, after all, prostitution is legal in much of the world and porn is illegal in some parts. Bottom line, people are having sex for money, and it's all good.

Main difference between pornstars and prostitues :

We are videotaped, and paid for selling the rights for diffusion.

Pornstars are creating a product. They are are indeed being paid to have sex, but, it is to make a video. Just the same as if Tom Cruise drives a car in a movie, he is not being "paid to drive a car"- it is part of the movie he is being paid to be a part of.

I think pornstars are prostitutes, doesn't make it bad for me because I don't believe prostitution should be illegal.

Seriously though, they get paid to have sex. That's a prostitute.

You don't illustrate your point. You just show that performing in porn is a subset (special case) of prostitution.
The legal arguement - shows that lawyers can split hairs.
Testing - was only done to keep government out. In some places where prostitution is legal, testing is mandatory.
Also individual prostitutes have themselves tested.
As recent events and Marc Wallace show, testing can be circumvented.
Fear of physical harm - well some of this has to do with the level of prostitution you are talking about. Also it has to do with how legitamate/mainstream the pornographer is.

I would say that Melissa Lauren has mentioned the main difference.

No offense taken here, but i d don t like when someone refers a pornstar as a "whore". You can use the word "prostitute" to illustrate your opinion.

Well, when Anthony Hopkins plays a cannibal, do you believe he s evil and eats humans at home?

No offense but totally NOT the same thing. Mainstream actors are role playing someone they're not. Porn stars are simply paid to fuck, as are prostitutes. You don't act the same way in your personal life as you do on camera? Neither do hookers. To them it's a job.

No, but I believe he is an actor and entertainer like a person in a play or a guy eating fire for tips.

When a porn star dresses and pretends to be a nurse or maid for a scene, nobody believes that is what they are, but they all believed she was paid to have sex in the scene.

None of this says that the porn star will have sex for money outside the context of studio work.

And soldiers get paid to kill people. Does that make them murderers? Unless you are a jingoist, context is important.

Actually, it does make them murderers, just that it's legalized in the case of a war situation.

It's all a question of semantics and culture.

Personally I think most people are prostitutes, as most people hire their mind, body or soul for money in doing their jobs.

Too often your last sentence seems to be true. I think in an ideal world everyone involved in a scene should be satisfied equally without the fixation on the male talents pleasure.
Your definition gets a bit shaky given the fact that some male talents/producers are only in the game to satisfy their own sexual desires that there is a camera going comes second for them. I won't look up the zillions of different definitions for 'prostitution' as imho the job 'pornstar' can easily be subsumed under the broader term 'prostitution' in almost all of them.
However some talents (no I won't give you examples) think there is some kind of difference that makes them something better. Who cares let them talk. If you have what it takes to be a successful prostitute be proud of it!

BTW, I do think it can be a serious advantage if you enter the pornbiz with the sexual experience of a professional prostitute. Not only considering your erotic skills but also psychological you will likely face less problems than an eighteen year old newcumer.

You can read more about my position on this topic here and here!

Not all pornography involves penetrative sex . Are the participants of that type of product also prostitutes ? And how about mainstream films with penetration , are those actors and actresses pros too ?

I'm a little bit slow today but yes if you just pose for a camera you prostitute your body for the photographer and later the viewers of those pics.
You wouldn't believe how many photographers get their kicks by just shooting photos without wanting any sex. Not that a real prostitute wouldn't try, but this is a strange breed of people I have given up to understand.
No, those are bloody amateurs :)

By that logic Britney Spears is a prostitute as well , unless you believe her success is down to her wonderful talent for singing ! ;) And if using your body to get a reward is the only criteria for being 'on the game' then I can think of a few past girlfriends who might qualify too . Or do expensive earings and trips to Harvey Nics not count ?
::cough :: Sharon Stone :: cough ::

How about simulated sex scenes . Do you guys see that as prostitution too ? After all , the intended effect for the viewer is the same . Or is willy in punani the defining moment ?

Prostitution is everything and everyone. To make it understood between the all of us reading this, prostitution is the Selling and buying/ (exploitation) of sex.
Sex is an essential need for most just like Money is.
SO even if you DONT do porn or prostitute you are bound to become one anyway just not so directly or literal-like.

We're all trying to get stuff that we need and want, we call that consumption,,,Sex and money are most commonly acquired from our fellow humans...Humans have many denials and dramas caused by the expectations of the society they were raised in. If you want something from someone you know to be nicen' kiss ass or trade something of equal value, nothings free.
That stay-at-home-mom you just married was a prostitute when she spotted you at the night club on Sunset and noticed the "Doctor" infront of your name and your nice Rolex watch and sick ride outside, she wanted that money, that 2 million dollar tennis bracelett, I mean that 'security', and what do you think she plans on doing to make this relationship an equal one, she needs that leverage and she's gonna use the amazing powers of her Putty Tat.
But like any other well-orchestrated business transaction, there was an Equal trade between both parties, both got what they wanted/needed. Now that they are married she's still a prostitute for her primary, primitive intentions,,, to acquire that security(money) and he'd be a promoter of prostitution because his primary primitive intention was to get laid, and both are fully aware of these basic beliefs because of enculturation.
Everyone is a prostitute, it was the very first established market back in the Mongolian days during the times of the first civilaizations of the world.
In the highly hypocritical days of Queen Victoria of England, the strict mannerisms of that society demanded you to be so utterly perfect and precise (they even covered the legs of tables!!!), but this was also a time of the highest rates of child prostitution and highest rate of gentlemens clubs, because everyone was so restrained, and denied in their everyday lives they had to let loose in even more extreme ways like with children and stuff. Where ever there is extreme amounts of restraint (like with priests that cant have sex, not even once),,,you're bound to see all the sick and dirty crap seep out somewhere. So America musn't be like the Queen of England and never deny us our Porn!
It provides an extremely harmless yet very efficient "pleasure outlet".
So the difference btwn. porn and prostitution???
The Laws of America put it most clearly, consistent or not with all the other laws, porn is legal and prostitution isn't, whether they are almost the same or not at all, thats what the law says so thats that.
I look at porn as a different style of adult entertainment, compared to prostitution or stripper clubs, etc.
Cable porn is a different style of porn compared to Pure raw hardcore Gonzo. But it's all the same to me, even that stay-at home mom I talked about and her rich successful doctor husband played a bit of the prostitution game when they first met at the club and on into their 'marriage'-(which happens to also be a traditional business proposition)JUST like prostitution, just not as long term.
Give and take is what we were born to do, BUT nothings for free and thus we must all buy and sell ourselves and eachother to get the things that we need/want from others that have what we dont have.

Did Britney Spears do any hardcore shots? With this floppy bosom she can forget it! And for the record, Angels can sing better than she too.
Besides expensive earings and trips to Harvey Nics are no 'rewards' but basic foods for women.
But now excuse me Sir, I have to cook a meal over here.

It was only a quotation. I know that you're an actress but some "bad people" try to present pornstars as Cheap Sluts, White Trash Whores, Cum Splattered Bitches and so on. Only marketing? Maybe.

And no, I don't believe Anthony Hopkins eats humans at home. I even don't believe he does it on the plan. He gets paid for pretending cannibal, not being.

Doubt it . But she has posed in those lad's mags like FHM and Maxim - which are marketed to adolescent boys too young to buy porn but still in need of quick , ahum , relief ! So you tell me , what's the difference ? Or going further back how about Sophia Loren's wet shirt scene in Boy on a Dolphin , was that a prossy-moment ? ;)
And Blowjobs aren't sex , they're just stress relief . ;)
Who said you could leave the kitchen in the first place ? I'm doing a curry with 2 week old frozen chicken tonight . Tasty , no ?

Jayna , I can see that argument and kind of agree with you . Maybe in the end it all comes down to just how blatant and obvious the connection between sex and reward actually is ? I once went out with a posh girl who had far more money than me : did that make me a ho for accepting a trip on Daddies boat ?

That's a nice point. The payment is for the sharing not the sex - which I guess comes down to contracts.

How does this fit with 'another $500 for a DAP' type conversations? I'm thinking of one of the XXX Road Trips where Vince negotiates... I can see him as the company owner negotiating on behalf of the company, but the argument starts to get a bit thin.

I'm tempted to say there is none since both use their bodies for the fame game,
however I don't like this universal interpretation of prostitution. If you want to be in my book of real prostitutes you'd better have some erotic skills other than just looking good.
Sophia Loren plays in a league of her own. In her early days she actually did some hardcore footage but her jealous husband bought all the stuff back from the producer. (He is Italian I think) Sophia is no comparison to this hydrogen addict chirruping grasshopper who somehow escaped the barbieland zoo.
fine, we can talk about stress relief once we're back from our trip to the Lagerfeld store.
What kitchen? She finds all ingredients in the store! Should she get hungry over trying on different out fits she will give Ray a sign. Trust me, this sign gives true relief, just in case Ray did not pass away peacefully til then.

Tip! You better cut short on the curry and eat pine apples.

Nice vicious circle. Without sex there are no rights to sell for 'diffusion'
The payment is for the sharing AND the sex

A 'classic' prostitute does not sell those rights just the sex.

three shorties for now:

1.) Yes.

2.) 100 % agreement with X-RAY regarding the "be proud about it, if you are good at your job" aspect.

3.) Can someone explain why this topic is so important that it comes up every other month? Is it the "romantic" approach that tries to convince people to believe porn is better than prostitution? Or what? I do not have a clue.

I think porn and prostitution are certainly viewed differently by most people.

Prostitution has got a more 'sleazy' reputation possibly due to the fact it is usually hidden away and often carried out illegally.

Porn however is very open (heavily advertised) and almost always legally made.

I don't know about 'romantic' but i think in many peoples eyes being a pornstar has a more glamorous ring to it than being a prostitute. Think... appearing on TV, appearing in glossy magazines, appearing on boxcovers, appearing in advertisements etc.....You basically become famous.

sir wankalot,

I know about this approach to the topic, but I still do not get it.
This approach has a wrong starting point. Well, at least when it comes to EE girls (and those are the only ones I can talk about, because I neva met a PornStar who was not from one of the EE countries personally). EE ladies do not enter the biz to become famous or to be featured in glamour magazines and all. Money is the prime mover for them. And you know what? Most funnily those who find out later that working as a "real" prostitute is much safer (say: condoms), means far less stress (say: no dozens of people around, when you pretend to have some fun) and gets you more money, will stop working porn and do `escorting´ only.

So, why view something that is basically the same thing with different eyes? IMHO the world is not like "porn is good" and "prostitution is bad". Basically it almost is like one thing leads to the other.

If stardom and fame comes along with doing porn, I would say: Enjoy it. Generally this stardom does not last long. In porn you may be a star today but you will be forgotten tomorrow because new and fresh talents are knocking on the door to stardom.
But OTOH I heard that lots of EE ladies really prefer the anonymity {<-- spelling?} of `escorting´ over the worldwide presentation of porn. Especially when they think about having a family later. Which is another aspect why most EE ladies do not really want to become famous pornstars......

Even Extreme Elitist ladies may recognize that achieving a certain amount of fame through porn movies can tremendously increase the rates you charge for your services in case you work outside the biz. This is not a good idea if you want to be sainted though.
Neither being a pornstar nor being a prostitute will give you an advantage in the parents representative election for your kids class, on the other hand, who wants such an ungrateful job anyway?
