Paying for sex is a matter of fantasy or convenience -- and most people do it even without realizing it. (Hmmm, throwing down a couple hundred for dinner, drinks and a concert for a date ... repeat a few times ... finally, get laid, a few times, doesn't work out .. start again)
I mean, there's a cynical/practical view ...
There's also just meeting someone you really like and hanging out and enjoying a mutal attraction, and that doesn't have to cost a thing ...
I couldn't help but wonder what effect legalized prostitution would have on the economy after reading your post. Which businesses would be hurt most, which would gain? Not really looking for answers, just thinking out loud. After all, to get the politicians to listen there needs to be a financial incentive for everything.
Medical clinics would get more buisness. That means more demand for lab techs, nurses, and nurses aids. More state/federal workers to keep track of the paper work - make sure the tests/liscensing is up to date. (Possibly outsourced to third world country). More tax revenues & liscensing fees. Finally, you can make tax money from prostitution. Don't forget sales tax and hospitality fees. Any buisness traveler can tell you how ridiculously every city sets their hospitality tax (hotels, rental cars, etc.). Less cops getting freebies. Before anybody gets their backs up, I'm not saying all police are dirty. Some are, because they are also human. I'm looking forward to the ads and franchises. Just to see what it would be like, not to patronize.
Maybe it's different in the UK, but here most women work as well as taking care of kids, etc. so from what I've observed it's more like legalized slavery.

I'm with croy. Legalizing prostitution would benefit a lot of industries and people.
As far as marriage being prostitution, like DB said, married women work too. We don't need a man to buy crap for us. Besides I don't see how a household appliance is a gift for the woman. Gee thanks for the washer now I can wash your clothes more efficiently. Holy 1950.

As long as our society remains tethered to religious doctrines and dogma we will never accept prostitution as legitimate. Politicians are going to pander to a populace that firmly believes that sex outside of marriage is wrong. People believing that they're born in sin will always have a rationalization for their hypocrisy, living one way and preaching another. Prostitutes provide an absolutely necessary service. Repression, especially the sexual variety, is very dangerous and the cause of a tremendous amount of pain and truly abominable acts. I believe that the only way we can effect a change is by standing up for our beliefs and making our children more enlightened than we are. We shouldn't hide the fact that we're sexual creatures. We need to become a more sex positive society.
I agree. Although, I'd add tht this is an industry where I would want to see some regulation (like how bars must have liquor licenses). Streetwalkers, unless possibly in a designated location, should not be acceptable (just like someone can't stand on a street corner selling shots of Vodka to passers by).
While this topic has generated a lot of discussion, I think it's important to point out the distinction between wanting something and having a reasonable expectation for obtaining something.
A number of posters have pointed out that they think prostitution should be legal. This is a personal opinion, and while everyone's opinion should be respected, it's the broader consensus that determines if it will be legalized (or remain legal where currently so). I'm not sure what my personal opinion on the topic is. Picman articulated the point very well though: So long as our common culture remains entrenched in a moral crusade, entertaining the thought of a society that is more accepting and understanding of things like prostitution is pure fantasy.
I think I addressed the licensing issue. Being the inspector for such establishments would be interesting enough. How about lingerie/costume sales? Every strip club I've frequented has a couple people drop in now and then with their wares and catalogs. The decorating/ambience type stuff. Let's face it, Home Depot doesn't sell the fixtures needed. Convention cities would have a harder time competing. This is especially true for small and medium size trade shows and conventions. Many Midwestern cities would have to change their way of thinking to remain competitive.
Personally, I don't think street walking should ever be legalized. In Amsterdam, where prostitution is legal, they have designated area's where john's can go to pick up street walker's who wait in bus stop type stall's, then once picked up they drive to a parking stall within the same designated area. Why anyone would choose that over the many brothel's and the red light window district is beyond me.
As for the endless supply of individuals who mark marriage as legalized prostitution, get over yourselves, it is not the same. Extremists. Similarities exist only within the spin-master's mind, or within bad marriages. A healthy marriage is nothing like paying a prostitute a sweaty wad of cash for nasty impersonal sex.
Last time I looked, this was a thread on porn stars who escort, not a generalized arguement over prostitution. Let's get back on track people.
I'm amazed at people saying that Escorts will go bareback.
During times when I've been single I've been with more Escorts than I can count or remember. Bareback has *never* been on the menu. [*One* girl spontaneously offered it to me - she didn't want more money for doing it, it was because she wanted a non-pro relationship with me so I don't think that counts]. In my opinion sex with a professional is safer than sex with a girl you pick up in a bar or disco.
I'm pretty sure there have been a number of medical studies published, done on professionals in Nevada eg, and all the girls always used condoms [why would they risk their lives?] and no instances of STDs were found amongst the girls during an extended test period.
In my opinion sex is a natural bodily function - so long as both parties consent to it, and neither is cheating or lying to someone else about their involvement I see no other moral dimension.
One thing I did learn, which surprised me, about working girls is that lots of them are *not* hardbitten pros. I know the hooker with a heart of gold is a cliche but it was from girls I was paying for that I learned to appreciate the essentially kind and caring nature of women in general.
I remember a 23 year old German medical student I chatted up in a pub. The next day she 'phoned and said "Take me out to dinner and you might get something nice at the end of the evening if you use a condom". [Germans can be very direct]. So I spent a bundle on her and I got to have safe sex with her. Doctor's are like, from the uppermost strata of society, in a conventional ranking - right? Me, I didn't see that much difference between her and an escort. And I don't have any problems with either of them.
To see them when they are not 'working' you wouldn't know what they do.
These girls do what they do for whatever reason that they do what they do.
Anybody who criticises them should look at themselves first.
I am basically a prostitute if you use that logic. We are all whores. Go on argue it. Do you work cos you love it? Or do you work for free? I hate my job but i get good money. But i use my hands not my genetalia.
I'm not criticizing what they do nor who they are at all. I have no problem with them and have thought for years it should be a legal and controlled industry.
I just think that comparing marriage and work to prostitution isn't right. The negative connotations that have been associated with that word shouldn't be used for yourself or your wife let alone for the noble men, women and AC/DCs of the profession.
Comparing prostitution against other trades is simply an issue of classification. A prostitute is a class of worker, anyone that has a job is a worker. A prostitute provides a (sexual) service for a fee but providing a service for a fee does not make you a 'prostitute', it merely makes you a worker.
Admittedly if you freely use the word prostitution you can have fun renaming professions: Doctors - Healing Prostitutes Receptionists - Phone Sex Technicians Astronaut - Prostitutes in Space Database Administrators - Data Whores Truck Drivers - Cargo Sluts
Of course prostitutes (and even udder fluffers) can be great people. There's no generalization that says a class of worker are good or bad people (except lawyers and politicians)
You're dealing with them in the role of friend (or neighbour or family, whatever) and not as a "John". I'm sure if you knew them only as a client they generally wouldn't care who you were. Of course there can be exceptions with that too, but that depends on how frequent a customer you are.
p.s. Lemonaid, I have no problem with you and have enjoyed your posts in the past. To use some British vernacular, I'm not taking the piss on you. (correct?)
Perhaps I should have prefaced my previous comments with a disclaimer about the posts being my opinion... and that they are, as warped as they may seem.
If you want to consider yourself a prostitute then that's your choice. And if you want I'll start calling you a brit-whore, man-servant or any other derogatory label you want.
But really you're just a worker bee like the rest of us (prostitutes and plate lickers included)
never understood that cliche, same goes for "bob's yer uncle" what the f does that mean? That's also the song title by what amazing British band... Let's see how old you are by your ability to name the band.
Religion? ouch, that makes my skin burn. I thought people stopped asking me about that stuff after wearing my "Jesus was a quitter" t-shirt.
Didn't I make it clear that prostitutes are worker bees like the rest of us? They have to work to live too, just an analogy. They're common folk with uncommon jobs.

The full saying is bobs your uncle fannys your aunt. I'm English and i don't fully understand it. Not true. It just means that everything is a okay.100%
one in the same... you should know that stuff, they were huge for a while. I'd like to see 'Bob's Yer Uncle' used for a dirty interracial scene... either way, B on W or W on B.
I liked Shaun Ryder and the Happy Mondays and Bez. But i was more into death-metal and hard-core at that time i.e Alien Sex Fiend and Napalm Death. Otherwise the option was Kajagoogoo or DuranDuran. I would rather kill myself.
Nevada leaves it up to individual counties as to whether they may have legal brothels. There are very few actual state laws governing prostitution. The only ones are
1)No county with a population over 400,000 (applies to only Clark County/Las Vegas) may have legal prostitution.
2)All sexual activities must involve a LATEX condom.
3)The ladies must be tested for HIV. Some counties also require testing for other STDs and hepatitis.
4) All legal prostition must originate from a legal brothel (IE No escort agencies) though some counties allow outdates technically all sex must take place in the brothel.
The counties that have prostitution have various laws and ordinances governing it.
Funny that everyone mentions the (Moonlite)Bunnyranch in this forum, despite the fact that there are several better houses. Dennis Hof does seem to be having an impact with his high profile, something not good for the industry. No, anal is at the discretion of the lady. Most, however, will not do it. They say "It isn't allowed" to keep guys from pressuring them, in the same way they say "Kissing isn't allowed", when in fact there is no law against it.
Try and keep them on the TV. Once they climb out of the television and start gyrating on top of your coffee table, that's improper pornstar placement. Try to usher them back into the TV at that point. If they don't respond to gentle nudging, threaten to call your wife into the room.
They were set up to be our fantasies, so of course I fantasize about them, and even keep tabs on which ones escort, because that's part of the fantasizing. But if starlets are going to start being havable, then why did I waste all that time and energy fantasizing? Because much like President Bush I "work hard," and watching porn has always been "hard work" for me. That's a lot of labor I've put in. Okay I'm not really sure where I'm going with this anymore, but you'll find out as soon as I do thanks to the stream of consciousness method!......
When pornstars become attainable, all that does is remind me of how other people besides pornstars are attainable locally and--dare I say it?--for free! Or for a negligible fee. Plus, with pornstars you've often been treated to visual proof of their reddish STD breakouts, whereas with a local mall girl there's at least some chance you'll emerge unscathed. .......What?
I'd like to apologize for the writing of this post. To my doctor, my preacher, my "ATF", my father, my cats, and my legal counsel--I'm sorry. But most of all, I apologize to you, gentle reader.
I have to post this... me and a few other girls were just talking about this recently. Exotica uses pornstars pics. Half of those girls don't even work for the site! They steal the pictures and either send someone else or as stated before... say she's booked. I know of 2 girls AT LEAST on that site that DO NOT escort! Don't believe everything you see... simple fact.

Exotica is legit. I know first hand. What they are guilty of is leaving pictures on the sight when the girls are no longer available.
I don't know your friends Genesis, so they may or may not be telling the truth. You would know better than I. But I can tell you some girls aren't exactly screaming from the roof that they "work" on the side. I've been with two contract girls, and I've read interviews of both in which they adamantly denied ever doing -- or wanting to do escort work. It's just the way it is, and those that don't use agencies find other "under the radar" ways to be more discreet about doing it.
