Is anyone else surprised that the price of physical DVDs hasn't come down more with the advent of the internet, streaming sites and the sheer volume of lovely adult content you can get from a subscription site?
i think way fewer are being pressed\ made so with the low supply they have to keep charging the same as when they were mass producing to offset costs. also i think they know a very small fraction of collectors and older viewers still crave physical media so they can charge whatever they want knowing that the small quantity they produce will still be some what in demand amongst those niche audiences.
You mentioned "sheer volume," and that really is the core problem-working at that scale comes with a huge cost to quality. I didn't notice it at first because I bought a few of my favorite scenes on DVD and was disappointed, so I switched to subscription services. I actually found a lot of my all‑time favorite scenes that way. But then I ran into a pack that included the original DVD source, and they had run it through QTGMC. It looked better than any subscription service or VOD purchase I'd ever seen. That pushed me to try it myself, and I was honestly stunned by how much quality was hiding in the disc once it was processed correctly. The bigger issue now is that the old "pirating scene" isn't what it used to be-most DVDs are basically lost media at this point. And you can't get the same results from progressive‑scan sources or newer releases, because they're already progressive and don't benefit from the same deinterlacing/upscaling workflow. A lot of DVDs from around 2015 onward are progressive too, so they're not great candidates either. That's why older DVDs are getting more expensive. Archivists and preservationists are hunting them down because you can genuinely remaster them better than most studio contractors can. When you're not trying to process an entire library under a deadline, you can afford to spend a few hours on a single disc-and the results end up better than what studios push out on their websites.
cool screen name btw! lol. glad to meet someone else who still enjoys physical media and you clearly have a good amount of knowledge. this QTGMC is an upscaling program of some sort? i am intrigued as the majority of my dvd's are from pre 2015 because in a lot of cases that is the best quality that exists of say the old classic red light district scenes. i would like to be able to watch some of my old dvd's on my 4k tv and have them look decent as opposed to having to watch them on my tiny CRT tv. this software you speak of may be my solution!
I personally use StaxRip. And just to clarify the timeline: 2015 is only a rough estimate. The real "goldmine" for high‑quality, well-authored DVDs is the early 2000s and earlier.
My recommended workflow for doing QTGMC in StaxRip is: 1. Rip the DVD - Use DVDDecrypter first - it produces the cleanest, most predictable VOB structure. - Only fall back to MakeMKV if DVDDecrypter fails or the disc uses newer protections. 2. Load the VOBs into StaxRip - Use Merge Files and add all the main VOBs for the movie so StaxRip treats them as one continuous source. 3. Set up QTGMC - In the Filters panel, deselect everything except the source filter. - Add Deinterlace → QTGMC. - Choose the preset you want (e.g., Slow, Slower, or Very Slow if you have time/resources). - Set Mode = Interlaced (for true interlaced DVD content). - Move the QTGMC filter right below the source filter - order matters and QTGMC should run early. 4. Crop if needed - If the DVD has encoded black bars, re‑add the Crop filter after QTGMC. - Some DVDs don't need cropping; some do. 5. Preview and trim - Use the Preview window to scrub, mark in/out points, and trim the footage to the section you want. - This part is confusing the first time, but once you understand the timeline markers it becomes easy. 6. Choose your output format - In the encoder dropdown, pick the format you want. - If you plan to run the result through Topaz Video AI, choose an intermediate codec like ProRes (ProRes KS) or DNxHR to avoid generational loss. 7. Run the job - Start the encode and let StaxRip process the QTGMC pass. - When it finishes, you'll have a clean, deinterlaced, stable source ready for further processing.
