So I start the files then they all share the bandwidth and more or less finish up simultaneously. But what I would prefer is to have one hog most of the bandwidth and finish up, then the next does the same, and so on until the whole queue is processed. Mostly this would allow me to go ahead and watch the first file, and also it would reduce exposure to dropped downloads if there's an internet hiccup (I've been fighting some connection issues lately). Also, I have seen some reports of the speed limit feature not functioning properly; maybe that is/was an old bug which has been fixed. IF the DTA speed limit does work properly, AND IF you are only interested in the first file downloading quickly, you could try this: 1)Start the first file downloading using the normal Firefox "Save As..." procedure. 2)Queue up and start the additional files downloading using a speed-limited DTA. The first file will (theoretically) download at whatever speed/bandwidth remains available above the DTA speed limit. So, by adjusting the DTA speed limit to a slow speed in relation to your ISP maximum speed, you could have the first file download completed much faster/sooner than the DTA downloads. This is just theory; I have not tested it. If you try it out, I'd be interested to know if it works or not. [Link] |
| zambi Senior Member 1451 Posts 3/10 | Posted - Jul 2 2015 : 4:37PM I use IDM (Internet Download Manager) which is not free but its fairly cheap with multiple PC licenses. I tried free download managers years ago and gave up on them after trying IDM which is actively supported. I found IDM to be much faster and more robust than free ones. In particular sites like youtube were changing their websites to discourage downloading videos but IDM would always have fixes. For downloads from PPV websites they use multiple streams instead of just one so they can download parts of the file concurrently instead of using one serial link. So you can download a file 4-6 times faster. You can also queue up files to be downloaded and adjust the order for priority. You cannot get around the expired link problem. Websites use temporary links which expire after few minutes to discourage automated robots and download managers from monopolizing their bandwidth and cpu time. However, IDM makes it easier to refresh that link I believe. And because it downloads faster you have to have a long queue of files to trigger that problem. Regardless its much better than trying to download lot of files manually. [Link] |
