One with a free trial would be great (I'd buy if it truly works). The problem (as always) - everything I find is for PC. The consumer report I have found which indicates which ones work, only shows ones that are PC. Can anyone help? Thanks. Consumer report I looked at Edited by - jrsl76 on Apr 3 2009 [Link] |

Probably the easiest way, which will work on any Mac, is to boot from the OS X DVD that came with your Mac. I assume you still have it or can find it. Once booted from the DVD, OS X will assume you want to reinstall or add new software from the DVD. During the install process you can quit out of install and run Disk Utility. In Disk Utility you can select the Mac disk you want to erase ( be careful, select the CORRECT disk if you have more than 1). Once you select a disk you can select 'erase' in disk utility. Then you can select 'security options' which will allow you to write zeros on every byte on the disk multiple times. I think 35 times is the upper limit, which I believe passes NSA security standards. Note that more passes require progressively more time to complete. With a large disk 35 passes can take a really looong time! BE CAREFUL. ONCE YOU DO THIS THERE IS NO WAY TO RESTORE ANYTHING. PERIOD. THE ONLY OPTION IS A COMPLETE REINSTALL OF OS X. IF you can't find / don't have an OS X install DVD (which came with the Mac), then the other options become boot the laptop in target mode and address it from another Mac, or make a Linux boot CD/DVD and boot from that. -- hope this helps |
