Is it going to be like email at all. As in I can opt not to make my email public and thusly not receive private messages?

I'm grabbing this from a previous post in a different thread:
Yes, here's a screenshot of the page in your profile area that controls your private message settings.

There will also be an "address book" and an ignored users list. The address book will be used for two things: 1) a quick way to sent a note to someone and 2) your list of approved senders if you choose to use it for that purpose.
We won't display the PM icon along with your posts if you don't want PMs from everyone OR if you only want them from people in your address book. If you're using the address book mechanism then only those members will see the PM icon along with your posts. If someone is on your ignored users list they will still see the icon and think they are sending you a message but we'll silently drop it in the background with no notification to them or to you.

With the PM system your email address will never be made public, even if you do decide to accept private messages.
The current system we have in place also doesn't share your email address with anyone.

I think you answered my question in the other thread.

I haven't gotten back at this yet. It's most likely going to be another week before I do.

This is exciting! I don't use PMs on most forums that often but it's still really nice to have the option.

I have a question about post notification emails for Topic Subscriptions. I plan to change the current Topic Subscription notification mechanism to use the PM system instead of email. So it will insert a PM into your box instead of sending out an email for each new post. Is this OK?

I'll give it a try. In my time here I have never used the post notification functions at all.

That works fine for me. Then again I'm not subscribed to very many threads.

I guess it's a nice function to have if someone uses it but I've personally never purposely used it.
But yes. It's fine with me if you do it that way.

Sorry to bump an old thread but is there a reason why I'm unable to send and receive PM's?
Someone said they sent me a PM a week ago but I do not have the 'private message' tab at all in my edit profile as per the screenshot above. It just says email and I have no options at all relating to private messages.

As far as I'm aware, the private message system has been talked about from time to time, but never actually implemented. If someone says they sent you a PM, they probably mean they used the e-mail function.
