I've had a weird problem with the last two discs that I rented that were released by Red Light District and Platinum X. The discs were "Black Dicks & Asian Chicks" from RLD (on Friday) and "Feeling Black 2" from PXP (today).

In both cases, the picture had kind of a halo effect around every change in color on the screen. It kind of looked like watching a rear projection TV where the guns are out of alignment. Depending on whether the color was going from a darker shade on the left to lighter shade on the right or vice versa, there would be either a red or blue line right where the beginning of the ligher shade began.

This hasn't happened with any other discs (I've watched other discs on this TV between last Friday and today) and I'm sure that it's not my TV or DVD player (I tested "Feeling Black 2" on another DVD player/TV in the house.

Has anyone else noticed something like this on any of their titles.

Since RLD and PXP are "sister" companies, I'm assuming that they use the same outside companies to manufacture their DVD's. If so, it might be a good idea to check this problem out quickly so it doesn't happen to too many titles.

Edited to change "Feeling Black" to "Feeling Black 2"

Red Light used to author their DVDs at my building. Since last November they have changed authoring company. It seems that their new authoring company have a problem with their video cable when they encode the movie. I also read some reviews on ADT that they compress the video too low in real time. The magic for authoring is that if you need to compress it in a low bit rate, you do it VBR- meaning the encoder will re-encode over and over again untill all the pixalation will be gone. A 2 hour movie will be encoded for good five hours.

All the authoring in the world won't help the fact that PXP uses an awful camera with awful lighting. I always thought it was their dvd authoring to blame. But I took a look at Anal Expedition #2 and Full Anal Acess #2, compard the vhs to the dvd on both movies and found that the vhs looked EXACTLY like the dvd, dull and without colour OR sharpness. They have without a doubt, the worst looking porn (technical wise) on the market, and it pains me to say it because I like the action they shoot. Unfortunately they just don't shoot it with good equipment.
I'm no expert when it comes to cameras, authoring etc. But I do see that something is definately off with the camera or lighting they are using (PXP) to shoot their porn, it looks absolutely terrible. Some of it actually borders on being totally colourless, almost like it's been shot in black and white.
For some reason, Mason's movies are the only ones that look to have decent color to them, but the picture still looks somewhat dull and not very sharp on her stuff as well. Either it's the lighting or the camera. They better figure out who or what the problem is. I don't even rent their stuff anymore (vhs or dvd) because I KNOW it's going to look like hell.
I think Brandon Iron once said they use the same camera as RLD does, if that's true it might be the lighting, I don't know anymore, all I know is that they should look into it and quick. I don't buy their movies anymore (except for Mason's) because of the terrible picture quality and serious lack of colour. Their stuff looks like it was taken from a second, third or even fourth generation vhs tape. Whether its on dvd or vhs it doesn't matter, it looks really bad.

I also have a problem with a recent RLD I bought used. It would pixelate badly for a few minutes on one of my DVD players, and just skipped over by another one. Not a biggie since it's only a few minutes of bad data.

My Full Anal Access 2 has the halo effect you describe here. I doubt its due to poor encoding bit rate as it would not cause that effect. Something else is seriosly wrong and they need to fix it fast. I thought it may have been a one off, but if it carrys on like that I won't be buying any more!

One reviewer did notice the problem but isn't it funny how Selena Silver's ass kissing review gives it 5 stars for picture???

I don't think that Oren was blaming the halo effect on a low bit rate. He said:
That's probably a good guess as to what's causing the halo effect.

I think that he added the low bit rate issue as another one that can cause problems with RLD/PXP titles. In this case, pixelization.

I agree with you though, until they have this problem fixed, I will be renting their DVD's instead of buying them.

"They have without a doubt, the worst looking porn (technical wise) on the market..."

I absolutely disagree. While we may have problems technically that vary from title to title, the overall quality of our product meets or exceeds most other companies. Like you, I watch a lot of adult movies. To single us out as being "the worst looking porn on the market" smacks of a mindset that is predisposed towards finding what is wrong instead of what is right.
We put out good product at a fair price.
I am sorry you don't buy our movies and hope that we can earn your business in the future.

Sincerely,
Brandon

I can say I'm with Brandon here on PXP, I love that companies work and they are almost at the top (if not at the top) of my favorite companies. I have seen all of their titles from the start of the company (well i haven't watched some of the newer ones but will ) and I can say there has been only like 3 or 4 that have that halo/projection kind of look to them. And with saying that every company I have came across ends up with some technical problems, the ONLY one I know of that doesn't ever seem to have any problems is Evil Angel.

Brandon,
Instead of just disagreeing with a generic negative statement from M.B., how about addressing the problem with regard to a specific disc ("Feeling Black 2")?

There is currently a problem with the discs that you are releasing. The problem is not isolated to a single title (it's happening with a title from you sister company as well). It's a problem that needs to be addressed. If the problem isn't fixed, I will end up agreeing with M.B. If all PXP titles end up having this "halo effect", because nobody cared enough to correct the problem, your DVD's will be unwatchable.

Edited to change "Feeling Black" to "Feeling Black 2" and to correct the phrase "If the problem is fixed" to "If the problem isn't fixed" which is what I meant.

Bill,
I thank you for expressing your concerns with our product. I don't know what to tell you. I personally screen my DVDs and do not see any problems. They look the same on my television as they do on my computer when I edit them. Also, the edit masters look the same as the original footage that is shot on my Sony 3 CCD camera. I cannot fix what I cannot see. Believe me, I would be the first to change a process if I saw any halo effect. It's just not there when I screen my DVDs.

I asked our DVD guy what could be the cause of this and he said he wasn't sure. He will look into it and get back to me. I will then get back to you.
As a side note, there have not been inordinate numbers of returns citing quality issues. The overwhelming majority of viewers find our product enjoyable.
It dismays me to see such a discrepancy between so many customers re-ordering our titles and M.B. stating that it is the worst porn out there.

I don't think you would have seen returns because of this yet. I've just noticed on DVD's released with in the last week (March 5th & March 8th). Neither of them have been one of your titles. "Feeling Black 2" was one of Michael Stefano's releases and the other one wasn't even your company. But given the relationship between PXP & RLD, it's a fair assumption that the problems are related.

By the way, the problem doesn't exist on Photographic Mammaries, which is the most recent of your titles that I own.

The problem is more noticable on larger TV's than it is on smaller screens (it just jumps out on my 56" set) and it is noticable immediately because it actually makes it difficult to read the names of the performers in the opening credits.

The purpose of my post was not to complain about the problem (I didn't buy either of the titles, I rented them), but more to let you guys know about the problem before affects too many more titles.

I have only noticed it on some titles. Some are worse than others, but none of my PLX or Redlight DVD's even closely match the quality of other companies. The best redlight i've seen is multiple P.O.V.

I'll try get a shot of the problem if i can.

Bill,
Thanks for the input. I have another suggestion. Can you post 3-5 time codes of places in a Platinum X Pictures movie where the halo effect occurs?
This will help us to look at what's going on.
For your trouble, we'll send you any other PXP title of your choice.
Thank you,
Brandon
www.platinumxpictures.com

P.S. The more I think about this, the more I wonder if it has anything to do with Michael's use of a c-light. If the action is dark, perhaps the c-light was moved in too close and this resulted in a blown-out, halo-type effect.

I only rented the two titles that I noticed the problems with. So I don't have them anymore to be able to give you specific times. However, it really doesn't matter because in "Feeling Black 2" it is constant, right from the opening credits. I don't think that it has anything to do with the lighting because even the graphics of the performers names in the credits were blurry because of this problem.

It's most obvious in shots where there is a drastic change in contrast. So, in shots where the skin of one of the darker skinned black girls is overlapping with that of one of the lighter skinned white guys, the blue or red line is very noticable.

Hopefully, if sanchez_1960 is able to get his screenshots, illustrating the problem, posted, he will be able to include the corresponding time codes.

If sanchez_1960 doesn't get the pictures posted in the next day or two, I will re-rent "Feeling Black 2" and get you the time codes of points where the problem is most apparent.

It's probably the lighting, the camera, or the master tapes that are being used. Or all of the above.
Somewhere along the line that master tape is getting fucked up. I'm pretty sure it's not your dvd authoring because I see the same colourless effect on the vhs, as well as the overlapping and blurry credits that was just talked about. It looks like the master tapes you guys are using are second or third generation for whatever reason. I'm not saying that they are, just that it looks that way.
During Anal Expediation #2, Katja Kassin was getting fucked by Steve Holmes in a scene with Manuel, Ashley Blue, and Julie Night. The picture looked rally bad, colourless for about 10 minutes then all of a sudden the camera moved and it looked light a light came on or turned off and the picture looked pretty good after that, the colour had returned. It went back and forth twice during this scene I believe. But that still didn't change the overlapping double image people are talking about. I'm sure it's not the dvd authoring because like I said before, I see this on the vhs of PXP's movies as well.
Someone over there is messing up the master tapes someway somehow.

But if it were the lighting or the camera, there would be no problem with the credits, as neither of those have anything to do with the credits. If the same problem is occurring on the VHS versions, it's possible that the problem is within the editing process.

Hi,

I've sent the email to Steph. I've been in the US for a few days on business.

Btw, I noticed on some PLX movies that the halo problem isn't on the main movie, but appears at "upcoming" movie preview at the end. So maybe it is the master tapes?

Here you go:

This is grabs from Full Anal Access 2 highlighing the problem.

As you can see around the text, you get the chroma/halo effect. The overall picture looks very blury too.

Here's how it is from Full Anal Access 3 (Which doesn't have the problem). Almost as good as other studios DVD Quality!

Oh no it looks like Micheal, Taylor and Steve Holmes all have Halo's above their head.

Taylor still looks a little blue huh. She's glowing, even around the eyes!

Good job. Thanks Sanchez.

Brandon, if you look at the 3rd photo, you will see a good example of both conditions of this problem. Around the outside of Michael 7 Taylor's heads, you will see the blue halo.

Around this inside of their hairlines, where their hair meets their skin, you will see the red halo.

The two pictures that Sanchez provided, contrasting the credits of a movie with the problem and one without the problem, is a great example of we are seeing on some of PXP's discs.

This is exactly what I was trying to explain when I wrote in an earlier thread about overlapping double images and blurry picture.
It looks like the master tape they use isn't the original, or that it's a third or fourth copy. I see this in most if not all of PXP's releases and it's the reason why I refuse to even rent their movies anymore other than Mason's because for some reason her movies seem to escape this problem, why that is I don't know.
I rent to find out if it's worth buying. If I know the quality is going to suck ass, I won't even bother with a rental because I already know what it's going to look like ahead of time. I have Full Anal Access #2 because I thought when I rented the tape that it was just a problem with the vhs, a bad tape or something. The action was so good in this movie I ordred the dvd thinking the picture would be much better, but when I watched the dvd there was no difference, it looked just as awful.
The problem is with the tape somehow because this problem exists on their vhs releases as well.

Even if it was the 3rd of 4th copy of the original DV tape they used, there would be no loss. Digital Video copies are identical to their originals.

I think the problem here has come from mastering the discs. While I did write earlier that it may be a master tape problem, it can't be since the graphics used in the movie are fucked too. I doubt the authoring house even check the disc as it was finalised and ready to go out to replication. If they didn't notice the awful picture then they are hardly worth having as authoring studio and should be fired.

I think the other Redlight and PXP owners and directors should be alerted this thread. Jewel De Nile is always going on about "I don't want that in my company", so maybe she should be saying "I don't want poor picture quality associated with my company"!!

Brandon, if and when you find out the problem please let me know as I will be putting PXP and Redlight movies on hold for now on purchase. I can only rent when I'm living in the US so it’s going to be disappointing for me not getting to see my "otherwise" favourite two companies. You don't want to be recognised for poor quality, just like Extreme Associates was do you?

Question for Brandon/PXP:

Sorry if this is off topic but as long as we're on the subject. I just recently ordered my 1st PXP movie, Full Anal Access #2. If the disc has the same problems as mentioned in this thread, will PXP, as a courtesy, provide a replacement/exchange?

Well, we can add today's new release: "Nuts, Butts & Euro Sluts" to the list of Platinum X DVD's that have this problem. Once again, it was apparent immediately during the opening credits.

Also, since I got out Full Anal Access 3 out of my cupboard I watched it and I've noticed it also has the problem to a lesser degree(yes the "other one" one i showed in the pics) However, it doesn't seem to appear much on the opening titles.

Nuts Butt also arrived on my door this morning. However, I would'nt say the problem is as bad as some movies! If certainly needs to be fixed, i'm a little dissapointed I didn't cancel my pre order. I won't be pre ordering any more titles for now!

Hi,
Thanks for the posts. Special thanks to sanchez for the screen captures. They really do illustrate the problem better than any words can describe.
As I am out of my league on this, I will refer this to our DVD author and ask for his comments.
Thanks for your help in identifying this problem. Of course we want to improve things.
Anyone who is dissatisfied with any PXP production should return them to the point of purchase for refund/exchange. Platinum X Pictures does not sell directly to consumers but we will honour all returns that come back for quality issues.
Thank you,

Just updating everyone that our DVD author is double-checking the masters in question to determine if this is an editing problem or an authoring problem.
He is as stumped as we all are as to the cause of all this.
Thanks,

Personally I haven't had any real troubles with
PXP & RLD's video quality on their DVDs.

Some of the earlier ones had some pixelation
problems which for the most part was taken
care of awhile back. That was mainly due
to jamming too much footage onto the discs.

There are some controls/settings on your
TV & DVD players you can try to improve &
sharpen the overall picture.

I still have a feeling it has something to do with the master tapes, I may be wrong but I compared the vhs to the dvd of some of the titles in question and they both looked somewhat the same (blurry, bad colour).
Hopefully PXP gets this figured out.

I don't get it. I just put 3 different copies of the Baker's Dozen dvd in my Sony DVP-NS300 player. I looked at it. An associate looked at it. It looks exactly as it should look.
This is really killing me.....

Brandon,

Having gave up, i decided to get Bakers Dozen in the end. Cool movie :)

If you look at time index 2 mins 37 seconds into the movie. You will see the effect is evident on Manuel's black shirt, you see a massive blue stripe as it blends into the background. Overall the picture is quite blury too. The effect appears on both my PC with LCD display, my Projector, Plasma and CRT TV's all with different DVD Players. All of which are high spec decks.

Brandon:

I, as a complainant, do not appreciate the inference that I may have a marginal or inferior system. I have a Sony DAV-C770 Dream System with progressive scan and a Sony WEGA TV.

I understand the stance, whether contrite or not, you are taking but before you further alienate PXP customers, I would like to hear that your studio is researching the issue at hand and that you will have a response in due time. You've expressed your incredulous disbelief often enough in this thread.

howie, I think Brandon is trying to find out the problem, let's give him a little slack on this as long as he's trying to figure it out.
Hell, I'd bring my player down there and hook it up, but I'm way out in Toronto, so that isn't an option.
Maybe the PXP guys are so used to seeing their movies look a certain way, that they can't see anything wrong with them, but I sure can. The picture is blurry, the colour (when these is some) bleeds from one image to another, and there are double images. Something is wrong, I rented the latest Latinas #5 (RLD) and it also looks to have a very dull picture, totally lifeless.
Maybe Brandon should pop a movie in from another company to compare PXP/RLD movies to, might give them an idea of the difference we are seeing.

My sister company have authored over 10,000 DVDs over the past five years. Brandon, tell the people who authoring your DVDs to encode PXP DVDs at 5.5-6.0 VBR bit rate. That would solve the problem forever and everyone will be happy. If they try to convince you other wise, insist that this is the way you want it.

Howie: You took my post the wrong way. By stating the type of DVD player I use (it cost less than $200, by the way), I was not inferring that you or anyone else has an inferior system. I was only relaying the equipment that I use for informational purposes. Far from alienating customers, I think I go the extra mile towards looking for solutions. This business is my livelihood and I take it very seriously.
Thank you for your patience.

First, my apologies to you, Brandon. I see now that you meant well.

The blurriness is most evident on far away shots of the performers. If the camera is not in for a close-up, the sharpness/clarity is lessened.

I hope the issue is resolved before the release of Ultimate Asses 3.

Brandon,
Which Video connection are you using between the DVD player and TV? If you're using the Composite connection (the yellow jack), it could be masking the problem. The composite connection yields the worst color seperation of the three possible connectors.

What may not be visible through compostite, could be very evident through the component or S-Video connections. This doesn't mean that there is a problem with the connections, just that component and S-Video will more accurately display what is on the disc.

When I bought Lipstick & Lingerie earlier this week, I didn't do so blindly. I'm friendly with the people at the store and explained the problems that you are having with your discs. I told them that I'd like to see if L&L had the same problem as other discs before buying it.

We checked their rental copy on their 13" tv with a composite connection and the disc looked good. When I got home, I found that it did, in fact, have the same problem. It wasn't as apparent on L&L as it was on Feeling Black 2. But it was definitely there. Also, the problem was more pronounced in an area of the disc that we didn't check (I don't think that we made it all the way through the opening credits at the store).

After not seeing the problem on L&L at the store, I pulled the rental copy of FB2 to show them the problem. While it was very apparent on thier setup, I don't think that it was as clearly evident as it was when I watched it at home (it also may be due to the fact that I'm watching it on a 56" TV at home and they have a 13" TV in the store).

Thanks, Bill, for the information. My DVD player is connected using 3 coloured cords (yellow, red, and white). I did not try the S-video cable yet but I will look for one.
This may help us get to the root of the problem. I spoke with our DVD author last night and he informed me that it may have something to do with our lighting. Michael Stefano always uses a c-light that could cast shadows or otherwise contribute to different colour tempertures.
This does not, however, account for the blurriness.
His editors do the same work for him, Julian, and Jewel De'Nyle. We are confused as to why Michael's product seems to have the most problems.
If the DVD author gets any more information to me, I will relay it.
Thanks,
Brandon

I've been following this thread, mostly out of ideal curiousity. Without having the source material, the edited show, and the offending DVDs in the same place at the same time it's pretty much beyond worthless to hazard a guess at the cause. Never the less, I'm going to give it a try.

I'd look into the step between your final edit and your DVD authoring. My best (but still not very good guess) is you have an extra digital --> analog and/or analog --> digital conversion in your image chain. Are you exporting MPEG2s directly from your edit suite and giving them to your DVD author, or are you dumping to tape and sending that over? If you're dumping to tape, are you doing it via firewire or SDI, or are you going out to tape via analog? If that's the case, that could certainly cause the problem discribed.

Tech sucks.

Brandon, the C Light would not account for the same effect being visible in shots done outdoors.

Man you are really using Yellow, Red and White leads? Man thats awful, Composite gives a real shit picture anyway!

I am glad you are looking into it but as previously mention by other people. Its going to be hard for you to actually guess the souce of the problem unless you watch over closely each stage. As soon as you see the problem appear you'd have it sorted. Yet, you've gotta see the problem in the final product to know what your looking for huh! ;)

I think Brandon will track
down this problem, but as
some others have said, it's
very evident on a big screen
tv using the s-video cables.
This seems the best way to
test things out when a
solution is thought to be
found. That's where it is
most unwatchable. And other's
dvds look great there.

Brandon,
I can't imagine that this problem has anything to do with lighting. In the Rita Faltoyano scene in Lipstick & Lingerie, there is a picture with a black frame on a white wall all the way across the room. The blue "halo" on the wall next to this picture was so visible that it almost looked as if the picture was backlit with a blue light (which isn't the case because the picture was hanging on the wall).

Hi,
Thanks, everyone, for the input.
TonyC: This is how we master our movies at Platinum X Pictures. Camera masters are edited on Macintosh G4 computers. The footage is digitized using firewire cables and Sony DSR-20 decks. The edit masters are run via firewire to DVCAM master tapes. The master tapes are digitized using DVD authoring software. Check disks are made that are reviewed by individual directors. Once approved, DLT's are made. These are the masters that are used by the DVD replicator.
I will try to locate an S-video cable. I assume that this gives better resolution. I am worried that I am not seeing the problem because of the equipment that I am using.
Again, all the feedback is appreciated. Many customers have big-screen TVs. We certainly don't want to provide an inferior product.
Thank you,
Brandon
