Hey, I recently purchased some DVDs from Asianplayboy. They were doing a sales on some Japanese titles and American. The Japanese were on sale for $4.99 and the American titles were on sale for 8.99. The price is really cheap, but how do they make a profit? Is the wholesale price that low? It kind of makes me think of getting into the business.

I can't answer your question directly, because I don't know the specifics of the situation.

What I can say is, "very easily." Blank DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs are available retail for less than 50 cents each if you buy in bulk (100 or so). I'd guess that wholesale bulk prices can't be more than 25 cents for porn companies and probably even less for Hollywood (probably = almost certainly).

Once a DVD has run its course and made back all of it's production costs, returns are almost 100% profit. That's why companies can sell DVDs in the bargain bin for $5 each.

Once production costs are met, a $10 DVD is at least 900% profit (that's allowing for a roughly $1 distribution cost, which is probably excessive).

Low quality adult dvd's can be purchased (wholsale) for as little as a dollar each (that's the lowest we have ever bought. To get this price we had to buy in 1000 disc lots and it was low end 4hr comps. We usually sell these for an average of $5 - $10. We also figure a defect rate of 1 in 20 (case damage, missing or wrong disc).
