This probably has happened on some levels in the past, but could some porn studio do the Project Greenlight thing with porn?
(Basically, the HBO series gives an amateur film maker a chance to make a low-budget movie after being selected in a contest.)
I guess it would be more about giving a regular Joe a chance to direct his (or her!) own porno using the popular porn stars (and not really the process of making the movie like Greenlight shows.) They would be given the equipment, the crew, and the money to shoot it, edit it and release it that a typical title from RLD (just as an example) gets.
I think this is a great idea. Much as I'd like to do it myself, this is perfect for Dion - Project RedLight. Seriously, it really is a great idea but whoever does it needs to make sure that if the "winner" ends up having no clue as to what needs to be shot, a pro should be on the sidelines to salvage a potential disaster.
I dunno about that, Quaze - maybe part of the appeal would be letting the disasters through. The whole point is that the amateur gets to try his hand at it. If the resulting product is a mess, and the view says "hey, I can do better than that!", now you've got that many more amateurs begging for their shot, and your series is a hit!
I think it would be a total hoot to shoot for this, I'd love to be shot by someone who wasn't jaded (yet). It might be frustrating and/or hysterical, but it wouldn't be dull.
That is a SUPER idea and I agree with Kimi, there should not be much of a safety net. Maybe just an experienced producer to make sure that nothing illegal happens and that something watchable results, but no pros waiting in the wings to assure a certain quality. The allure of Project Greenlight is not in hoping for a great movie to result, it's watching the drama and the angst as a bunch of people who are not nearly as smart as they think they are struggle with something that's way over their heads. If things ever ran smoothly and the set was free of anger Project Greenlight would S-U-C-K!! We all watch just hoping for a trainwreck to happen so that the producers, the directors and the writer get into a slap fight.
C'mon Dion, do this, it's a killer concept and even if the movie itself is terrible the "making of" disc should be a huge hit.
I dunno if this a great idea or not. I can see the winner making five scenes that all revolve around his/her tastes. That would get kinda old, and it would only cater to those that have the exact same tastes as the winner. Perhaps if their were five winners, each shooting one scene, or short story. Much in the same way the AniMatrix is.
I don't think there should be a contest that involves any particular competition - make it a lottery, just draw someone's name. Nobody gets to make 5 movies (unless they're really good and some company decides to hire them - but that has nothing to do with this project), or go round after stupid round being eliminated... blah on all that reality TV stuff.

I love the idea of the real Project Greenlight. But I really think that the executives in charge of the project purposely picked the 2-director team because they knew it could cause the most conflicts, which would make for a better story. Me, I'd rather see less arrogant, more serious people working through real-life filmmaking problems rather than tons of personal bullshit that has nothing to do with filmmaking.
As for a porn version, it could be very interesting. I would think that a search rather than a lottery would be better. There's a lot of psychos out there that it wouldn't be a good idea to have them on a porn set, let alone pseudo-controlling it.
And on Project Greenlight, there ARE studio execs there streamlining decisions and heavily influencing things.
Glad everyone seems to like the idea. (Do I get credit? Okay, how about a free DVD?) I think it WOULD work better if there were 4 or 5 winners shooting 4 or 5 scenes instead of just one....though maybe the logistics of that wouldn't work out.
As in the real Greenlight, there is a somewhat extensive contest online to weed down hundreds or thousands of contestants down to a smaller number and finally to the winner. This could be an interesting process, with contestants bringing forth their ideas, etc.
Overall, I see it as a chance to bring new ideas, thinking outside of the box, different attitude to porn. But in the end it would probably just be an semi-mess.
