For the past week or so every time I start my computer I get the Windows' "Found New Hardware Wizard" pop up.

The hardware it wants to help me install is "Unknown"

(Damn right it's unknown, because it doesn't exist)

There is no new hardware unless the gremlins have been doing sneaky night time upgrades for me.

Any ideas why I'm getting this?

It's not really a problem, as I can click it away. I'm just confused about why it thinks there is new hardware.

Have you checked the Device Manager for anything that has one of those yellow exclamation marks?

Just checked.

I didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

Seeing the dialog box everyday kind of saddens me. It makes me wish that I had some new unknown hardware to install.

The only thing aside from mouse and keyboard that's plugged in is a usb cable for a camera.

I can't see why that would suddenly become an issue as it's been connected continuously since some time in december.

Conquistador, do you have Automatic Windows Updates enabled? It sounds like you may have a new (and buggy) USB driver.

I do. If I roll back the driver wont the auto update just grab it again?

Without autoupdate a rarely remember to update anything from board and graphics drivers.

Yes, if you continue using auto-update then you'll get the latest driver re-installed. Worse, you may not be able to get a copy of the old driver to see if that fixes your problem.

Regarding updating your drivers, my perspective is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The only time I look into updating drivers is if there's a security flaw involved or the driver is actually causing me a problem. The fact that it may be buggy performing some operation I'll never attempt doesn't concern me in the least.

That's why I always set the updates to allow me to choose which ones to install. And to be honest....if you've had your PC for a while, using XP....the only updates that are probably going to matter are security updates. I've found that driver updates often cause more problems than they're worth. If I'm not having problems with that device, I don't install them.
