Progress in this sexually oppressed society of ours. At first it appeared they were going for a gay version of "Baywatch" which would have been fine, not my cup of tea, but O.K. Then we get into, lack of moral, drug use, promiscuity, irresponsible un-safe sex, underage twinks..need I go on? I was utterly astounded. Like it or not, television is where most people get their ideas of "how things really are" and to many people, this will be their first and only exposure to a "gay" lifestyle. Their perceptions will be based on this incredibly irresponsible portrayal of the gay community. I am mortified that my family and friends may have watched this out of curiosity, and wondered if this was some reflection on my lifestyle. In a time when we are struggling for acceptance and the ability to be out of the closet without fear of rejection, violence or prejudice this is devastating. I cannot express how saddened and deeply disappointed I am. I feel as though the creators and producers of this show had a social responsibility, which they either neglected or willingfully denied. This is in part a letter I will be forwarding to Showtime, I strongly encourage you all to do the same. | netguy Member 687 Posts 12/99 | Posted - Dec 6 2000 : 4:15AM First off I have to admit I didnt see the whole thing-the person who taped it for me had a bad tape or vcr as the qulity was really bad and I couldn't sit through all of it. I'm hoping another friend taped it. But the little I did see I think the thing that bothered me the most was the "underage" aspect. Once the Christian Rights get ahold of that! Recently in NY there have been a number of arrests of men who have had either child porn or have had sex with minors and its really not a good thing. I think they couldve at least made all the characters of legal age. The graphic sex took me by surprise a bit, but then again, look at all the promiscuity on Sex and the City and some of the storylines on Oz! Sex and violence. On the other hand look at when you go out to the bars, I know a large number of guys who go out everyweekend, get stoned and drunk and sleep around all the time. When I was younger I did the same. But I grew up. It's all how you look at things. If I look at it as just a story/movie I thought it was hot and exciting...but if I take into consideration the political/social relevance...the underage factor has to be the biggest setback. Time will tell if it can hold an audience, or if being a father will affect Brian's sex life ( I hope not, at least for awhile!) Every show's got to have someone you love to hate. Although its not overly stressed.... I've found it compelling though and if a character gets me to react then they've done their job-Brian is an asshole who I want to kill and at the same time fuck! Give him some of his own medicine! Justins really cute and I remember my first time and how the next day I was rejected! :O( Boo hoo! I like the lesbian couple although I hope the blonde gets her head out of Brians ass! I like the other one though and her dialogue.... Anyway, cant wait to see what happens this week... While I don't like seeing it glorified and shown so much on TV, particularly the gay community, it IS as prevalent as the show has it displayed. Again, maybe the show is trying to shock up front and will mellow out. I do think the government is wasting millions fighting drugs that quite frankly I don't give a damn about. Legalization of hemp for textile and paper use would single-handedly cut the need for logging by 60%. The environmentalists have been brushed aside by crotch-sniffing republicans and soccer moms who think they should be able to tell us whether or not we can use the leaf off this tree that God planted on this Earth. Promiscuity? Meeting someone and having SAFE sex has never been a problem or concern to me. But once I'm together with someone, I don't cheat or go looking. 17 is not underage where I live. You are gay, and yet you sound so repressed in your life. As if you are gay, but still feel the need to fit all the moral rules, codes, and ethics forced on the equally repressed straight people. Life is too short for that shit.If anyone asks me, I'll tell them it's not quite that bad. They're pushing for shock factor I think. I've never been to a bar that had sex quite so public. And I'm frustrated that they're not showing people who *don't* like to go to the clubs anymore. I'm 24 and have already really outgrown them. I meet people online. And I don't do phone or cybersex either. Bleh.I think more gay people should have been involved in the creation and writing of the show. I haven't seen the British Queer as Folk so I don't know how far this deviates.I have quite a few friends who live the lifestyle on the TV show. I'm not ashamed of them. At times I envy their ability to 'land guys' whenever they want. At other times I pity their inability to see love and go for it, rather than the next fuck. [Link] |

He asked David if they could still be boyfriends, and David said "I don't want a boyfriend, I want a partner." Mikey got all teary eyed and left. It was all very sad.
