Due to the tube sites and credit crunch, many studios arent shooting anywhere near what they use to. I would estimate that mainstream adult production is down 70-80% from what it was 2 years ago.
With that, many performers are falling on hard times and leaving the industry - at least on a temporary basis. And there arent as many new performers getting in. Rates have also been cut in half in some instances for performers.
At the high there was 1300 or so female performers in the industry. That number is now about 850. So we have lost about 400 female performers in the last two years. And I would estimate that only 10%-15% of those performers are working on a regular basis.
And its getting worse. If fans keep getting their porn for free from tube sites and stop joining websites or buying DVDs, new porn will come non-existent over the next couple of years. And new stars will be fewer and farther between.

Yes, that makes sense.
If people don't buy porn dvd's the producers can no linger make as much or any!

Crazy.
I think we're finally seeing that trickle down to consumers. There just isn't as much out there anymore. Still, I know for a time last year it seemed like so many girls were getting in - in reality it was probably just ten or so really cute 19 to 21 year olds that entered the business around the same time.

That is just sad, imagine a world where all porn consumption comes on those crappy sites, i don't even get why people prefer that garbage over the DVD/VOD method, cheapasses.

If i rent porn DVD's instead of buying or getting website membership am i still contributuing to the problem. I like the variety i can get with a mail in dvd rental companies. But don't want to harm industry.

This is a little off topic, but that number sounds extremely small. I would have imagined that the number was in the thousands.

Anytime that people are paying, it eventually trickles down to the people in the industry.
@Sickguy - As for the number of girls, I was just talking about the women that are with an agent in Los Angeles. The pros so to speak. When consumers watch free porn thats who they are hurting.
@Hey Now - and you will see even less new girls coming in now. I constantly hear from my clients that few if any are shooting. The money just isnt there for production companies to keep shooting new content just to have it stolen and put up on tubes for free.
The consumer is going to see a massive change in the industry in the next 1-2 yrs. It will survive but not as it currently is.

There's work... Porn has been part of the human equation since we could draw in the sand
As with the music 'industry', if producers made porn that people felt was worth paying for, they would...
Porn is a billions-of-dollars-a-year industry... if you, as a star or a director or a camera man don't think you're getting what you think you deserve, the first place to look is to your own 'work'... not to tube sites...
People who get your content only off tube sites most likely weren't going to buy your shit in the first place.

I think a big part of the problem is similar to what is happening in the CD world: adult stores are cutting way back on their DVD inventory. Converting shelf space that used to go deeper into back catalog and non-"Mainstream" labels/producers and putting things like toys and lingerie in its place.
I just got back from Albuquerque and last year the local Castle outlet used to have 4-5 tables stacked high with withdrawn rental DVDs and this year they were down to 2 tables that were stacked about half as high.
The combination of the recession, credit crunch and online tube sites is a triple wammy of convergence to make the industry shrink in opportunity

Such a complex question. Of course streaming sites are hurting the business but as Newromancer says a lot of people that are watching those sites wouldn't have bought any porn at all if the sites weren't there. The industry should probably try approaching this more scientific with a survey and some popular scientist to find out what the next thing should be.

Recent studies have seemed to suggest that the people who torrent the most music, also BUY the most music... I see no reason why pron should be very different.
But tube sites and torrenting and such are easy excuses for the porn world... an easy thing to blame when their same-old-same-old is no longer as appealing to a consumer that now has easy access to quite literally anythign they could ever want to view/buy!
I'm sure that if I went looking for porn where 3 midgets dressed as clowns have swing-chair-sex with a well lubed toaster-oven, I'm SURE I'd find it.... and if that's what I wanted I'd be able to pay for it, so that I could get more...
IF there's any supposed 'slow-down' in porn revenue, I suspect that glut is way bigger a factor than file sharing... I for one doubt there's any such 'slow-down'... Instead I suspect that people are buying what they want from the people who are supplying them, and the big players are feeling the pinch, as a part of what was their slice of the pie is now going to someone else...

Message to NewRomancer:
You cannot compare the music industry to the porn industry as they are similar in many ways but completely different on the income sources. I was in the music industry for over 20 years before getting into the porn business about 8 years ago or so and I do know quite a bit about both industries.
Porn Law is correct (Wow Michael you are finally listening to what I have been saying for 3 years now! lol that this business is going away quickly. The average guy does not need to see a porn movie from the beginning to the end nor does he need to watch one of our parodies unless he is a fan of the TV show. Many guys quickly jerk off on free sites and move on to other things before they go to bed.
My opinion is that ALL free sites are poison to the industry and will kill the incentive of companies to create new product. Advertising as a main source of revenue is at least 7-10 years off if at all.
You would not believe the number of girls that tell me they are out of work or haven't worked much in months. I have no idea what is to come but it will not be as fun as the past few years and that sucks for a lot of people.
Lastly to Agent_Zigzag yes if you rent porn movies and not buy them you are really not helping much to keep new production going. I don't fault you for renting but think about how many purchases would have been made if rentals were not around. It is not like renting a mainstream movie from Blockbuster.
I love this fucking industry and will continue to have fun until there's no more fun to be had. X-Play is still alive and doing well as we are shooting Not Mash XXX next week.

As a new girl, Jeff is correct on all counts. It's even harder on the new girls though. I'm friends with a couple of other girls who started around the same time as me, and unless you're an under-21 girl, there's not a whole hell of a lot of demand for us. Sure, we're working, but no where near what we'd like. The girls with names seem to get more work than newbies of any age (why take a chance on someone new when you have someone you know is good), and a lot of it seems to pay less than what some girls say they used to get. For me, I'm perfectly happy to do a scene for prices that some people indicate are roughly half what I would have gotten two years ago, so I think we're achieving some kind of balance. I'm not greedy, I just want to pay my bills and work more to save up for my future, so I've come into the industry with the idea that I'm not looking to get rich, just get my bills paid while the economy is in the tank and maybe come out a few years down the road with enough to start my own business.
And Jeff, if you're ever looking for a short blonde with big boobs, I'm absolutely available.

I chat on a regular basis with many newer and a lot of established pornstars and there is absolutely no doubt that work is scarce and the pay is considerably less than previously paid.

I never said the industry wasnt changing, I just said it isnt going to disappear. I have clients that have doubled their online sales in the last 3 yrs. I talked to a client yesterday that has 6500 members on their site and thats up from 4000 two years ago. I have another client that has held steady over the past two years.
There is money to be made. But its not in the b/g market. Its in niches. And its online. The one thing all those clients have in common is their content is niche specific and it cant be found on tube sites.
Clayra is right on with her assesment. Stars are now getting more work than newbies. The focus is off gonzo and new girls and onto features and seasoned pros. And Clayra has the right attitude, lower your rates if you want to work. So many of the agents are holding rates across the board in fear that if they lower them, the rates of 2 yrs ago will never come back. And they are right...
Clayra - if you are serious about your rates, I have clients that will shoot you. Contact me at michael(at)fattlegal.com and I will send your pics over to them....
I think the biggest problem with many in the industry is that it use to be easy to make money... lots of money. Now its a business like any other and profit margins have been cut... to non-adult business profit margin rates. However, people in adult (Jeff excluded) are use to having a printing press in their warehouse and that's no longer true. They have to work harder and smarter to make the same money.
And Jeff I will come by the set next week... You're sets are the best.

I am glad that you are able to help Clayra, Mike. It is too bad that her agent can't do his job rather than try to preserve what isn't any more. $450 (that is the low end of the scale) for a 6 hour scene is a lot more than my father ever made as Shop Superintendent for local foundries and machining operations! I understand that millwrights (that was what my father was starting out) are starting at $12-$15 an hour right now, down from around $19-$22 an hour. If Clayra can perform two scenes a week, she would make more in 12 hours than a millwright makes in 60 (and the millwright is a much harder job)! Yes, she has to move to LA to make it in the adult industry, but she will be much better off financially.

So the business isn't going away... it's changing... Porn is NEVER going to go away. The idea of a feature length movie might though... Porn as movies started as short loops... Seems to me like it's going right back there.
Again, maybe the porn industry would do well to change that....

That is perhaps the most absurd statement I've read since your last statement on this issue. If that were true, HMV, Sam Goody, The Werehouse and Tower records would all still be standing proud. File sharing of music and movies is the ONLY reason why those stores are gone. You're argument about making something that people feel is worth paying for is also absurd. People feel a Mercedes Benz is worth paying for but if they could steal one with virtually no chance of ever being caught, they would. Every major Hollywood movie can be found on torrent sites. Are none of them worth paying for? Dark side of the Moon and the White Album are on every file sharing site. Not worth paying for? Or is Newromancer the arbiter of what is and what is not worth paying for?

Please... brick and mortar stores are going away, but music that is smart enough to be making itself available via other avenues is doing quite well...
"Every major Hollywood movie can be found on torrent sites. Are none of them worth paying for?"
Are you on dope?!?! You're seriously going to try to suggest that that Hollywood movies aren't making money?!?! Check the dailies dude... Get Harvey Weinstein on the phone and ask him what size cardboard box he's living in these days.... Then give yer head a good shake.
"Dark side of the Moon and the White Album are on every file sharing site."
Now you're talking about ancient history.... How much more money do Pink Floyd and The Beatles have to make off old shit?!?!?

You know what killed Sam Goody and Tower Records: $18.99 plus tax. Ridiculous to adhere to such a greedy pricing sceme: it practically begs that your customers go online and either buy individual songs or steal it from limewire. If Tower, (which by the end had become as homogenous in their selection as any boring Best Buy) had dropped their retail prices to $9.99 they would still be around.
Ultimately people felt that $20 for a CD that cost pennies to produce was a rip off and that they weren't going to lose any sleep over finding a way to get it free. I think of that sometimes whenever I go into a porn store and see titles that are only for sale being listed at $39.95. I'm never going to pay that full fare for a porn disk.
And I don't steal porn, but like in music, I keep lists and troll til I find what I want used

YES TORRIS!!!!!!!!!! I myself buy much more music now that I can get it for $11.99 per 24 songs. Before Emusic, I paid 99 cents per song at Napster. People will buy if they get it for a reasonable price. I don't steal, either -- but I don't buy as much porn as I would like, and I could see more of your movies if they were $9.99 like Wal-Mart's. Even $19.99 and you would have more customers than you do now (and probably make more money). Modern business is all about VOLUME, not soaking people at $40 a movie! I usually buy adult movies when they are discounted to $10-$15. I support the industry's right to make a living, but I bet if adult movies were priced at $19.99 instead of $39.99 that you would sell more than twice the number of movies that you do now -- so much so that you would come out ahead of your current practice.

Y'know what? You're really an aggravating cunt. It's not for you to decide whether Hollywood or the Beatles or your next door neighbor has made enough money. From one side of your ignorant mouth you say that people should create content worth paying for and then from the other side, you arbitrarily decide who's made enough money already. You're a dick, plain and simple. You are yet another thieving maggot making excuses for his actions.

I'm not sure where the complaint about overpriced porn comes from. The average price at just about every online retailer is 20 bucks for a new release. You can find compilations for 5 bucks. There's a huge sale on Elegant Angel movies at adultdvdempire. They're all 12 bucks. And yet, more porn is being stolen than ever before and DVD sales continue to fall.

Given that this issue in the industry began within the past 2 years, which is interestingly enough contemporaneous with the recession, it's the recession that is the most likely issue significantly contributing to the industry's problems.
Furthermore, I would also concur with those who postulate that it's also the surfeit of content online being sold contributing to profit margins decreasing.
And when one combines that with the worst recession since the great depression it's only logical that the business will have financial problems.
So obviously when the economy improves, the industry's sales will improve.

Imaginative (R.I.P) already brought this up in another thread, but when asked to produce all he could bring to the table was ONE online (i.e. statistically inaccurate) survey commissioned by a biased group. Please produce these 'studies' you claim exist. From what I've seen it's the same BS study being cited on every link.
Also, your claim that the music industry is doing fine now is bizarre, loads of people have lost their jobs, and the promise that musicians could make their money off of touring has only panned out for the megastars who weren't going broke to begin with. Independent labels are treading water and barely surviving, most talented musicians have to work day jobs. Yeah, it's great I tell's ya.

From your lips to God's ears....however I doubt it. Younger porn consumers arent porn purchasers and I dont think it has anything to do with economics. The 18-25yrs old dont buy anything on the internet - except hard goods.
The turnaround is going to require a technological revolution that will take porn to the next level. Maybe its 3-D porn but I doubt it. But there will be something akin to the Apple Ipod that will help the industry out of the slump.

Maybe to someone whose head is firmly jammed up their ass I am... Brick and mortar stores are rapidly becoming a thing of the past... Hollywood movies and musicians are a PRIME example of people who are still making buckets of cash even though their product also gets copied and distributed over the internet... I may be an aggravating cunt, but you're a whiny little bitch who just seems like you're pissed off that your gravy train might be ending...
Source please...
I've seen no reason to dismiss it as BS... Can you provide any, other than it being an online study? Who is biased?

I understand that I, as a consumer, have choices. I want these stores to stay in business, especially now that I'm single, I have a lot of free time and I like to spend that time in record/cd stores, headshops, book stores and porn stores. If they go out of business all we have is online and that isn't as satisfying for someone like me who finds some of the best and unique stuff through serendipity of browsing in a store. Especially the bargain racks. And I agree Mike $10-15 is my sweetswpot for porn purchases. I'll take a chance on a title if I like the girl at $10; not so much at $20; almost never beyond that. And I'm the kind of customer who buys his stuff in baskets b/c I travel alot and seek out stores when I get to my hotel: just open up the yellowpages or pick up the local entertainment tabloid
I agree that in a saturated market, $40 for a DVD is not going to interest me. $20 is my threshold for a porn purchase; $10 for a CD. It's only on rare occasions I will splurge beyond that. I don't see what good it does for a porn store to have tons of new stock that isn't moving b/c the price is too high. NOt in this ecnomomy, not with the bittorrent sites just begging for a person to succumb to the temptation to thief porn.
But my guess is the porn store is being held hostage to the pricing scheme set by the porn production studios. If Evil Angel won't drop their per piece price, the porn store is just gonna mark it up 30%. And I know the labels are loathe to do this in a tough market, but that is the same error the music industry made.
My last comment on this is rewards for loyalty. My "local" porn store in EVanston Wyoming (part of the Goldie chain); gives me 5 bucks in gift cards for every 100 I spend; 50 for every 1000. That incentivizes someone like me to up my volume. Same with local music stores that have punch cards. They get my business b/c I get a token in return for my loyalty to them. Our Virgin Records store in (SLC) was the best CD store in town. They had double punch Thursdays. And I went there every thursday.

NOt everyone has the opportunity to buy porn online. I support the online stores that will ship to my zipcode, but I can most assure you in the brick and mortar shops: for quality labels, $20 is not the norm. Double that and you're in the ball park. Your label Mike Q, Zero Tolerance, retails for no less than $25-$30 at the Evanston porn shop I go to most often. Evil Angel is $39.99 to $49.99. Too high.
Mike Q: do you think that from the consumer end, $40 is not overpriced for new (shrink-wrapped) porn. Did you think it was ok and fair and economical for $18.99 for a new CD release?
I think this mentality of the high price per unit for a porn DVD is the same shallow thinking that is leading to its undoing. I'll give you an example from the music world: We have the equivalent of Sam Goody called FYE. It's a brick and mortar chain that sells new and used music; DVDS (no porn), books and novelties. The store by my house insists on $18.99 for new releases and the parking lot is practically empty. Yet they have a pilot store in the suburbs that is selling all new (non-import, non-special editions) at $9.99. Go there on a saturday and the place is packed. People of a certain age are still buying CDs. Just not at double the price they are worth.

Seems to me that porn is exactly the same as music in one respect...
It's the 'studios', the middle-men, the management and execs, that are the ones feeling 'the pinch' as the internet changes things like the distribution model, and the payment methods, while the artists are doing as well as they ever did, or in the case of the ones who are smart enough to change with the evolving business model, doing better than they ever might have...
And to address something MQ brought up earlier... Fine... Guilty.... I have NO sympathy when it comes to examples like The Beatles and The While Album... After it being released on LP, 8Track, R2R, cassette tape, CD, DVD, BluRay, over and over and over there absolutely comes I time when -I'm- gonna say "enough"! and NEVER pay for it again... If you want to get suckered into buying it over and over and over, it's your money... waste it how you want.
The estate of John Lennon has got all the money it's EVER going to get from me...

I see at least two examples in this thread of people misusing "you're" in place of "your." Quasar can be excused if watching and directing porn fills his head with hot women and leaves no room for grammar, but pornlaw is a lawyer. I wonder if he makes that mistake in his legal documents.
Also, the OP starts with some poor grammar, but it was moderated, so I can't comment about the original text.

I think most of what has been cited as the decline is relevant to all business across the board, not porns main problem. I think that porn is still taboo in society, and the direction it has gone over the last few years has helped to keep it that way. Porn had the opportunity to go mainstream years ago, they have gone the opposite direction. People are trying to compare it to music. I think TV is a better example. Fear factor, one of the first modern reality shows, was all the rage when it came on. People would tune in to watch people do and eat some crazy shit. But that ran it's course. Now look at the reality shows that people watch. Nowhere near as extreme. Porn went the Fear Factor direction, people got their thrill, now it has run it's course.

What killed Sam Goody, and the whole of the Musicland Group, was good strategy from a competitor in a lagging economy. When Best Buy sold the chain to Sun Capital Partners, they retained ownership of the distribution center, a vital aspect of the business. SCP didn't worry about this, however, as CD Warehouse had recently liquidated and SCP made a move to buy their distribution center. This move was blocked, however, by Transworld Media who purchased instead, which crippled The Musicland Group enough that Transworld (owners of FYE) were able to make an offer of purchase about two years later on all Sam Goody, Suncoast, etc stores. Notice FYE stores are still in malls, and still charging MSRP for CDs and DVDs. One thing most consumers don't understand is that there isn't that much of a mark up on these items, and there's an upfront cost of $18 on most DVDs being sold for $20. That's not enough of a mark up to make great profits when big box predators are using the main inventory of specialty retailers as loss leaders. In other words, imagine you're a fruit seller. You do well for a while, but then the big grocer down the road starts luring your customers away by selling fruit at less than cost, hoping to make up the difference in meat sales or some other product. That's what Best Buy and Walmart have done with mainstream music and movies.
I hate hearing that "over pricing killed such and such retailer, let's pirate stuff" because I've got a ton of friends from college who worked for these companies when they went under and got to learn what the real cause was...

Damn, I just signed on with OC Modeling and I want to give them a chance. Let me see how they do when I'm in LA next month, and if it's like it has been with other agencies, I'll definitely be in touch. Thank you Michael, I really appreciate the offer and I'm saving your email address!

the flooding of the market also contributes to bad market conditions, I would rather release 6 movies per month than 16, if we were to lower our price, we would have to double or triple our output to be able to operate the same.

Praise the porn gods! Pornlaw is dead on that we need a revolution, but I don't think it's going to be hardware. There's already separate hardware out there called FyreTV that makes getting porn on the cheap a reality, but it's proprietary and who wants to take up more space on a shelf in their entertainment center with a box JUST for porn? When I grew up, we had an, amp, an 8-track, a record player, a tape deck, a tuner, and a VCR. Later we added a nintendo. That's a lot of crap on our entertainment rack. Now, I have a receiver, PS3 and a cable DVR. If they'd allow me to run my TV reception through the PS3 Media Center and record in HD, I'd do it.
My point is this: We getting to the point where we have one or two devices that do the work of four or five. Look at all the things a smart phone can do. I don't need to carry a separate music player, movie player, camera, phone, PDA, watch, and game system, it's all in that one device, and a lot of people like it that way.
What would be ideal, I think, would be for FyreTV to make their service available over other devices, like next-gen blu-ray players, PS3, XBOX, and Roku. If FyreTV did that and was able to expand the amount of content they offered, all for ten bucks a month, we'd have the Netflix streaming of porn, and I think it would go over huge. If we make it easier to get porn in a way that doesn't break the bank, but is also difficult to pirate, I think we'll be on our way...

I am speaking of prices in general. I probably can't even count the number of new releases that are priced at $39.95 or $44.95. I will check that website next time I am able to purchase more movies. I agree that more porn is stolen and many people don't give a damn about the companies producing porn now. I still think porn in general would sell more than twice (if not three times) the number of copies of their movies if the $39.95 were $19.90 -- making more money in the process. Take a look at Adam & Eve's catalog if you don't believe me. As for thieves, the industry needs to figure out a technological feature to stop it or at least catch the uploaders so they can be jailed and fined.

@Harri Patel Probably for the same reason other college educated intelligent girls get into porn: It's good cash doing something fun. For me in particular it allows me the time to focus on other things, like the numerous art projects I seem to always have in front of me.
@mharris127 Like Jules said, if they start dropping the prices, they need to start putting out a ton more product to make ends meet. You cite Adam and Eve, but you forget that their main business is in sex toys and "novelties". They are probably using the porn they sell as a loss leader, just like the big box stores use it with mainstream DVDs to get you in the door. Even if you only buy the cheaply priced copy of Sherlock Holmes from them today, when you need a new microwave or fridge, you'll think of them first...

Independent labels have always been struggling.
And the music industry in the past 25 years, which coincided with the advent of music videos, has moved to a model of primarily supporting a small percentage of megastars with largely the same musical styles and generally ignoring the greater percentage of remaining artists.
As for file sharers purchasing the most music, there are numerous studies indicating that. Although I don't suppose it matters to some as as their argument against it is based more on ideology and opinion rather than actual evidence and facts.
Some of the studies:

I find it interesting though that in the first 7 years or so of this decade, industry sales were high, talent rates increased, and work was available for most. And while there was some grumbling about file sharing it wasn't taken too seriously because profits were high as the economy was doing well.
Then once the recession hit in 2008 profit margins contracted, work was sparse, talent rates decreased, and suddenly file sharing became the cause of it.
When the root cause of the downturn is the recession.
So the turnaround in the industry will likely be because of the current economic recovery.

Clayra, I don't agree with you here, although I appreciate that you have evidently at least taken some college classes in business from your argument here. I say they will sell MORE than double the copies of the same movies if the industry lowers their prices and eliminates the middle-men (which a few producers are starting to do). Since you are college-educated, I won't get into incremental economics here, but even with the relatively minimal extra cost of making more DVDs or processing more website members, they make more money -- without making a single extra movie or scene. The bonus is that they can make more movies/scenes with the extra profits they make if they wish (and some will), creating more work for talent such as yourself and even more profits for themselves. I realize that you can only take this so far before the incremental profits from extra production/lower prices disappear, but we aren't anywhere near that in porn yet, Clayra.
As for your art projects, I would appreciate it if you posted pictures of a few here for all of us to see. Maybe someone would even buy a work or two from you. Madison Young (a fetish performer with her own gallery) may even see it and invite you to display in her gallery in San Francisco someday (no, I don't know her personally -- sorry). No guarantees, but it is worth a shot in my opinion. If you are interested in displaying in a gallery, several of them (including Madison's Femina Potens) are accessible online for your perusal and possibly submission of artwork to them. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

I buy just about all of my CDs from Amazon.com and plenty of them are under $10. Are they all "loss leaders" so that I'll go back and buy something grander later?

Money is tight and price is often a decider. I have to ask myself, If I fork over #30 and the DVD has no replay value, then I might as well have set the money on fire.
Red Light has gotten at least some of my purchases of late because they are usually one of the cheapest selling prices (usually ~$17). There are cheaper, but Red Light usually does fairly well for the price. I am willing to still pay a little more though if I'm confident I will have decent replay value.
I suppose it is like the music industry in another way, in that I find myself buying more "Best ofs" and compilations rather than rolling the dice with my money on a CD that might have only one song on it (I still don't have an Ipod and probably never will). With porn it is the same way, you might end up with a DVD with only one or two good scenes.
I will echo a previous poster and agree that this desire to find more replay value does cause me to seek out more established stars (such as Rebecca Linares, Kristina Rose, Jenna Haze, etc)
...my 2 cents
