pornography wasn't sex but fantasies of an impossibly hospitable world

Interesting, although the author of the piece could have done a better job navigating readers through the difference between this 'hatefuck scene' and BDSM and comes close to blurring lines between all sex work and abuse.
The 'hatefuck scene' sounds similar to some degree to the 'scene' that grew around Chico Wang, JM Productions, Max Hardcore and Khan Tusion in the 90s.
In the US 'scene' they often made conflicting statements, claiming it was all real at certain points and then suddenly claiming the apparent lack of consent and misogyny were just a put-on at other times. I'm also a bit dubious about Rafael's claims in the article that his social media spiel was merely a 'put-on.'
We've seen posters here with that kind of doublethink in action, seeking porn with women 'really' in distress, then claiming that it is all an act, then when probed declaring they don't care if it is an act or not.
In some ways the old Wang/JM claim that their racist, homo-hating and misogynistic statements are not meant 'seriously' prefigures the nihlistic 'sarcasm' of 4chan and much of the net in general.
The blurring of verbal and physical violence seems to be the most insightful part of this article. The degradation of meaning and civility in language is often a precusor to real life violence.

^ I made similar comparisons. I don't think it's problematic to see much of this stuff as...well, problematic.

What I try to do as a fan is make distinctions between kink sadism (a turn on for me) and what I perceive to be actual cruelty (a turn off).

^ Me too. Do you feel that you can usually tell based on watching the scene or do you research the company?

^The prior, but I view it as subjective. It's about what I perceive to be taking place.

I agree with misspornusa that the distinction between the two can usually be communicated within the scene. Particularly in a 'gonzo' scene.
