I need a new sound card because my line-in is now refusing to work and my MoBo has support for 10 USB slots but only has 4 built in on the back and they are a pain in the ass to reach. I can install the thing, no worries about that. Also No-Frills. it doesn't have to do anything special. I only use right and left channels and have my sub woofer hooked to my stereo receiver. Cheap is the name of the game. Thanks. [Link] |

I have it and am very happy with it. Two other options for front-panel connectivity (but ones that I can't vouch for) are Creative's X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 PCI ($62.99) and its X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 PCI-E ($65.99). Creative is the first mainstream manufacturer out of the gate to have released PCI Express sound cards. If you just want extra front-panel USB and Firewire ports, modules are available from a number of manufacturers. One is probably about as good as another. |

And even if someone says "I tried that before and it didn't work...(or whatever)" try it again. Deliberately eliminate and isolate the problem. It make take doing things that you have already tried, just they you hadn't tried them in the right configuration , (etc). One day I spent around 9 hours trying to fix my computer only to discover one of my RAM sticks was *slightly* loose. After all the elaborate shit I tried all I had to do was make sure my RAM was snug. I wasted tons of time thinking that I had a much more complicated problem then I really did. Same thing with a graphics card once, I updated and wiped and updated everything. Rebooted in safe mode and made sure the drivers had a "clean" install. All I needed to do was adjust the cable leading to my monitor. Everything was fine. Try all the simple solutions you can think of before delving deep into any machine's guts. (and drivers, and BIOS and so on) Of course if you post I will try to help you if I think I can tell what is wrong. Remember that any modern sound card any windows machine should be able to work with. It may be as simple as uninstalling the drivers, removing the card. Turning back on the computer. Shutting it down. and then putting the card back in, rebooting the computer and let "plug-and-play" do the rest. |

For some weird reason I have a fire-wire card but no fire-wire devices and I think you are absolutely right about just buying a USB card. I have a 3.5in bay free on the front of my machine that I thought would be perfect for something... Bob, can you point me to any good PCI sound cards? They must have a working line out and line in, I don't even need a MIC jack. And it is okay if they are only accessible in the back. I was having a wishful thinking moment. |

If you read a few other topics of mine in Tech Talk you'll notice that right now getting to EB and getting some kind of satisfaction from game purchasing is my most major concern. That diamond is tottaly affordable, and does exactly what i need I'll try to get it next time I am down in Buffalo (stuff in the States is slightly cheaper now). The ultra media dashboard looks like something I could get lots of use out of as well. Too much stuff and not nearly a large enough budget. |
