Yeah I didn't think he was putting anything out like he did with Balls Deep at Anabolic. It seems like he wen't softer and the girls he was shooting weren't spectacular judging from Lex-Steele XXX. Who's fault is it to blame for the lackluster response since signing with them, RLD or Lex?

Dion, This one is a shocker to me. Where is he going to next? Also Dion keep up the great work
What will happen to the DVDs he released in conjunction with RLD? Will he retain ownership and still be able to sell them? I seem to think that's the arrangement with RLD, but I'm not certain. I agree that the Balls Deep line (from Anabolic) was the best of his work, and some of the Heavy Metal releases (from Rosebud) have been very good too.
Scott Fayner of Luke Ford just dropped a not-so-subtle hint that Lexington Steele just inked a deal with West Coast Productions (although he didn't mention Lex by name, it seems clear enough who he's referring to):Pontus
In the time since I launched Evolution in August, I have personally shot and edited 5 movies - Meat Pushin in the Seat Cushion, Asseaters Unanimous, Black Up That White Ass, Sodomy Sandwiches, and Just Ass For All, plus doing P.R., running the company, etc.
Since Lex joined Red Light in January, he has produced 2 - Lex Steele XXX 1&2
I'm just speculating of course, but maybe Dion found that Lex's work ethic just wasn't there. Perhaps Lex felt he had "arrived" and chose to rest on his laurels?
Who knows? Like I said, I'm just speculating...
It'll be curious to see how this plays out - will Lex be taking Lex Steele XXX 1&2 over to where ever he ends up? (I hear West Coast)
Tom you forgot Black Reign, Top Guns and Superwhores which were also released by Redlight but still the amount of output still seemed a little light considering how long he had been at Redlight but perhaps putting out one movie every other month brought in enough scratch for Lex. I wonder what happens to Lex On Blondes which I was looking forward to picking up. Lex out, hopefully Sean Michaels will be a little busier in both his own and other PXP releases.

5 movies all shot and edited by you in 2 months? That's alot of work. Do you have investors/partners is Evolution? 5 gonzo movies is like $125,000 budget.
Damn straight. That's why I currently have no life.Selling off my partnership interest in Extreme is funding Evolution until it starts generating its own income. That's why I currently have no money!Dave Gallegos (formerly of Sineplex) does my sales. I have a shipper, but on ship days we ALL get our hands dirty!
we will release Lex on blondes,we will still sell all the titles Lex put out through Red Light District,my deal at Red Light District is, if you own your own product at Red Light, and you leave all your prior titles stay at Red Light District, and the names of your titles stay at Red Light District, lex will get a pay check from me every month, for his sells of his product, his titles stay with me,but he still owns them,I won't allow holes in my catalog, now Tommy I'm holding that spot for you, unless you don't like selling 6000 pieces out the door, thanks for the kind words Tricia, you know how it is.
I just reviewed "SuperWhores" for another site and I was not all that impressed. As everyone else has said, it wasn't definitely not in the same league as "Balls Deep" or "Heavy Metal." However, aren't we giving Lex a little more credit than he might have deserved here. I thought that Heavy Metal was a Jules Jordan directed series before he left Pleasure for Evil Angel.
I have "Lex Steele XXX #2" coming in next for reviewing purproses. If this is of the same quality of "Superwhores" than I can understand RedLight and Lex parting ways.
These are not bad, persay. They are just not up to par with other RedLight product. And I too was not too blown away by the girls Lex was casting, though Avy Scott, Taylor Lynn, Bella Donna, and Cameron Caine were all nice.
After all of that, I am still very shocked to hear this, but I can rationalize it.
Good luck to Lex at WestCoast. Come to think of it, "Superwhores" did remind more of a Westcoast style production trying its best to be RedLight.
kelly
PS...I just checked up on my facts here. "Heavy Metal #1 and #2" are credited as being directec by Jules Jordan and "Heavy Metal #3" by Andre Madness. The only one I can't figure out is the newest one, volume 4, released just a couple of weeks ago.

I hope that wherever Lex goes he won't be restricted regarding his performances. The one drawback to his RLD deal was that he could only perform in their productions. I don't know how he was able to do more Heavy Metals, but all his other scenes were RLD and PXP. Now maybe he can be used by Jules Jordan again or Anabolic (they could really use him). I'm sure Tom Byron could fit him in and Zero Tolerance could use a little color, too.
So technically, no one REALLY '"owns" their titles, they just get a sweet percentage deal. "Owning" means, at least to me, when you leave, you take EVERYTHING - masters, stock, film, etc., much like Patrick Collins did when he left Evil Angel. I appreciate your not wanting holes in your catalog, but to say that your directors "own' their product when it stays at Red Light when they leave is a bit misleading. That's not to say your guys aren't making a ton of money, I'm sure they are.At the risk of giving away trade secrets here, If I were willing to sell my product at the low price that you do, I'm sure I could sell comparable numbers. I prefer to maintain the integrity of my pricing structure. You may have made a brilliant decision keeping your prices that low, it means more stores are going to have more of your product in stock. You're giving people good product at a good price. But, lower prices means you have to put out that much more product to meet your bottom line, and in the end, one might find oneself compromising quality.
Competitive pricing does, however, raise the bar for us "little guys" to make our movies that much better, to give consumers much more bang for their buck. So, all in all, the customer wins!
And that's the way it should be.
Thanks Dion, for the offer. You're a helluva nice guy and a very astute businessman. If, somehow, Evolution doesn't make it, I'll be bangin on your door with all the titles that I own !

Tom, what trade secrets are you talking about? porn is shot pretty much the same from company to company. there is no secret way to do it.
Tommy, I won't even responed to you saying I sell cheap, remember,I'm the salesmen for Red Light District,I know what just about everyone sells for, especially those sweet deals you give that isreally guy Tomar,so be carefull when you talk out of context,I keep my pricing at a fair wholesale price, now try to save up enough money so you can comeout with another title, and also if you don't think owning at red Light District is the right thing, why don't you ask Vince or Mike John hows it going over at Red Light District, put that in your pipe and smoke it Mr Icon.
Enough said,Dion Red Light District.

I agree with the general sentiment that Lex's best work was with Anabolic or shooting for Jules Jordan. It also seems like the prevailing opinion, at least among the raincoat crowd, is that Lex is much better as a performer than he is as director. While I think that opinion is largely justified, I doubt Lex himself is very comfortable with it, and I can't help thinking that must have something to do with his moving on.
Ah, the joys of living in a capitalist society. Being a consumer and nothing else I think I'll bow out of this one.

PS..."While I think that opinion is largely justified, I doubt Lex himself is very comfortable with it, and I can't help thinking that must have something to do with his moving on."
When I posted up above about how I basically thought that his RedLight stuff wasn't so hot and made me wonder what happened to the Lex who was involved in two of my favorite Taylor scenes from "Heavy Metal #1" and "Balls Deep 2" I couldn't help but think what Lex would think of that. If he were to mosey on over here, I am sure he would be happy to see that we all think he is just a beast of a male performer but frustrated that some of us aren't sold yet on him as a director. I imagine he will try to prove us all wrong with whatever he does at WestCoast.
WHOA Dion, little sensitive there, don't ya think?
I never said you sell "cheap" I said you sell a good product at a good price. But, you and I both know mine goes out just a tad higher. That's not to say your way is bad, as I said before, you're getting a lot more of your product out to the people. Time will tell which method serves us best, I could very well have to lower my prices in the future to stay competitive. Oh, and just for the record, I don't sell to Tomar.
Also, I NEVER said owning at Red Light wasn't the "right thing" - I simply challenged your definition of "ownership" - I'm sure Vince and Mike John couldn't be happier.
Let's all calm down, take a breath, think happy thoughts...sheesh!
As an outsider I always assumed that the deal at RLD and the very reason for the mass exodus of talent from Anabolic was so that they could OWN their titles. To me that meant they could take their titles with them if they chose to go to a different distributor. Oh well, you learn something new everyday I suppose.
Personally, I really don't give a shit about who works at what studio, who owns what titles and who's most profitable - that's an issue for those in the biz. As a viewer, I just want good flicks. Let them worry about the rest...
Now back to the subject matter:
Bottom line, from the titles I've viewed, Lex wasn't putting out good releases at RLD. The move was a wise decision, no matter whos it was.
Dion, I think Tom is at that point where the currency to tempt him is a little sleep. Tell him you can handle sales, replication, shipping, advertising, equipment, hiring crews for shoots, etc.
The thing I don’t think most people realize is how long it takes for a project to turn into revenue. I bet from the time that Tommy spent his first nickel on Meat Pushin’ it was at least four months before he got any revenue. There’s nothing like a small business victory party for first project completion or first shipment where all you can afford is Pepsi and Pretzels!
The last couple of years has seen a lot of talent start their own companies. But in almost every case there was at least one partner to handle all of the business side of things and the talent needed to merely shoot, edit, etc. I think Tommy is unusual in that he’s apparently handling the business side of things too.

I think you have read incorrectly. Dave Gallegos does sales for Tom Byron.
Best of luck to all parties involved and especially to Mr. Steele if he does in fact join WCP - who in my humble opinion produce the best interracial hardcore on the market today.

Dion, I am a big fan of RLD. I think I saw your post that NCD by Mike John sold 14,000 pieces. Can you please tell me which RLD titles are the top 5 sellers. I already own NCD and would like to own the other top sellers.
1 No Cum Dodging Allowed-Mercedes 2 CumDrippers #2-Monica sweetheart 3 Just over Eighteen #2-Jenna Haze 4 Break em in #2- Peaches 5 Cum Swapping Sluts #1
Hey dion. This list made me think of a question for you...what sparked the release of No Cum Dodging Allowed when you already had a swallow title (Swallow My Pride)? Is there a slightly different fetish you are trying to target or are you just trying to get more of the swallow market? Just curious.
It's sad news being a fan of Lex & RLD! But should be a good move on both parties. Maybe Evil Angel can now go after him. You guys don't have a Black Director yet.
I noticed Lex likes using Big girls & fake boobs in his movies. Usually a no-no policy at Red Light.
Hey Tom Byron, were you on the debate team in school? hehe
Brandon did the first two voulumes of Swallow my Pride and david lugar did volume 3 for Red light District, and than Mike John came along and I offered him ownership and he wanted to do "No Cum Dodging Allowed". his product, his idea,I just sell it.
Believe me, I wish things could of been better between lex and Red Light District,I had big plans for this, but we just seen things much different,I wanted him to be more infront of the camera with young new fresh girls, and with mike John shooting camera, this porn business isn't rocket science,it's just fuck films, keep it simple, big black dick and little white young new chick,is a beautiful thing, wow if he would of just listened he would of got rich at Red Light District, but he likes older girls that been around longer, and he wants to do more of his own camera work,I wasn't happy with the work Lex did at Red Light District, and he didn't feel comforable at red Light District,so I'm happy hes gone and I'm sure the feelings are mutal,if W.C.P. is were he ends up,I hope he can captiolize on his strengths,Like Jules did with Lex the Impaler, best wishes to Lex.
Tommy you know I love you,and that box with Taylor Rain was amazing good for you,I was a little upset about the game lastnight when I responded to you, fucking Tampa Bay.
I agree, Lex's Red Light stuff wasn't very good. I didn't buy not one of his RLD titles because there was always either a black on black scene or too many fat ugly chicks. I wanted to see Lex banging young white and asian chicks in every scene, but he kept putting fat old white chicks and too many black girls in his movies. I want to see major interraical action, not Lex banging black girls. There's such a glut of black on black stuff out there it's not funny. But there isn't enough good solid all-interracial stuff out there. West Coasts stuff sucks with that scrub Jack Napier in every one of their movies, and he can't even keep a hard on. Lex could have cornered the market in this genre becuase nobody is putting out a quality series featuring black dudes with only white/asian girls. The only decent series out right now is the BiggZ And The Beauties (Digital Sin), and that's about it. Anabolic's Up Your Ass series died when Lex left. We need a really good interracial series that sticks to interracial scenes.

I think you would have to be pretty naive businessman to believe that when RLD says that certain porn directors 'OWN' their product that means ownership with no strings attached. That would be ridiculous, RLD would be left out in the cold any moment the director/owner on a whim decided to cross the street and go someplace else.
The strings attached are that RLD has distribution rights on the product, the director does still own his product and gets his cut, which from what I'm told is a pretty new thing to the porn movie biz. Evil Angel was doing this before RLD I believe, or are there differences between what RLD and EA do?
Does the director/owner put up the $$$ to shoot these movies or is it shared?
Nobody has to answer these questions btw, business always interests me so I ask questions.
I don't understand why companies owners think that a good performer will also be a good director. They're two different things. Too many performers become to easy directors and it doesn't work.
I think "directing" in porn is sometimes a different concept than directing in Hollywood or indie films. For a lot of gonzo, especially, it's more about the shooter -- or "human tripod" -- than whomever's name is in big type on the box. Is Joey Silvera a "director"? Absolutely. Like Leslie and Stagliano, for instance, I consider him a porn auteur with a very distinct and cultivated vision (Leslie is the most "filmic," Stagliano, perhaps, the most obsessive and visionary). I think a lot of actors turned "director" are only nominally directors; I don't think they would be able to make a non-sex film. Mike John could (though he's really more of a shooter-turned-stunt-cock -- and terrifically so!). Jules Jordan could.
I was very disappointed in some of the titles Lex did for Anabolic in which he was credited as the director. His "Initiations" was terrible, coming on the heels of Vince's volumes of titles. I think his best stuff was when he was paired with JJ. That was an ideal teaming of visual talent and studsmanship and, for the record, I dig that Lex digs more seasoned and rumpdilicious women -- though there is always something very exciting about the "Black dicks, white chicks" premise (even though, when the cocks are that huge, it all ends up being a bit of a circus stunt/Guiness Book of World Records kinda deal rather than intense and intimate exploration of sexuality and American's color bars.)
Uh, well, anyway, that's all I had to say. I'm glad also that Tom Byron has his own thing going with Evolution. And I really appreciate his congenial good-naturedness. He, for one, has made the transition from performer-to shooter-to director-to mogul appear seamless, even though I know he's sweating his balls off (in every way possible!).
P.S. I really hope Lex doesn't end up at Weast Coast. Their dvd's are lame IMO. Wish he'd go back to working as a performer with Evil Angel and Jules. I'm crossing everything for a "Lex the Impaler 3"!!
I dig the fact that Lex apparently wanted to work with the girls he worked with and do things his way. I especially appreciate that he wanted to work with more seasoned performers. I am lusting after a lot of new girls (Betty Sue, Jennifer Luv, Nevaeh Ashton, etc), but if I had to choose between Lex w/ Bella Donna or Lex w/Taylor St. Claire as opposed to him with some new girl I would take Bella and Taylor any day.
Lex had his shot at doing things his way with RedLight and it obviously did not work. I don't think that means he should quit trying to direct. If he really wants to direct then I hope he finds his vision or way with WestCoast or Evil Angel or whoever he goes to. It's just that I still see him as a beast of a performer in front ot he camera who has yet to sell me on his abilities behind the camera. Like I said earlier though, I hope he proves me wrong.
Another big black dick buries itself in the West Coast graveyard. Congrats if that is where he is headed but I think Dion will more than be able to work with Sean Michaels and improve upon the Lex titles he was releasing. Word of caution though, Sean Michaels can put you to sleep during many of his scenes. It's okay Sean to really get into fucking a gorgeous girl...promise!!!!And as for West Coast...how many 13 inch dicks does it take.Looks like they've given up the non-interracial market. Thank God for that. One gripe though....more black lesbians....repeat with feeling...more black lesbians!!!
No probs D. Gotta give it to the Colts, though -what a comeback!
What I said obviously struck a nerve and upset you, and for that I am sorry. Sometimes I get a little too heavy-handed in my analysis of things.
Truth be told, I was sick at home with the flu I caught from ECVS, my DV recorder was out so I couldn't edit, so I spent a lot of time on the internet and on this message board dealing with my boredom.
You've got a great thing going over there at RLD. It's really stand up of you to share the wealth with your guys and they should consider themselves very lucky to have you. Lex should've listened to you. I doubt things will be much better for him out in the cold cruel world.
Best of luck to you and everyone at Red Light District!

I never understood what all the fuss was over Lex. Sure he is a good woodsman, but no better than Mr. Marcus, Brian Pumper or a slew of others. In addition, I never was impressed with his directing at all. Erick Everhard and Mike John are ten times the director of Lex. He doesn't even like anal sex! To truly highlight the beauty of a woman's ass, a Director must truly love the art of butt fucking. Lex, Skeeter, Mike John, and of course, Tom Byron are great examples of this. Lex always said he won't even do anal sex after his career in porn. After watching wonderful anal debauchery from all the other great directors, Lex's flicks were very vanilla. And I have reviewed every one of his current titles with RLD and lots of his material with Ana/Dia.
I don't get this, how do you see a bunch of vids with black guys with black girls as a glut? What about all the porn that has white guys with white girls,is this a glut?Or are you saying you'd much rather see the same performers but with interracial scenes?

I totally agree with this comment. The female talent Lex chose for his RLD movies was just not very good for the most part. And even when he did get good talent, like Sophie Evans, Olivia Del Rio, or Venus, girls who have all more or less made their careers taking it in the ass, he did non-anal scenes with them. This coming from a guy whose career highlights as a performer were in the Up Your Ass, Lex the Impaler, and Heavy Metal series.
I was thinking about just this very topic the other day. To be fair, West Coast does put out good scenes from time to time. But as a whole, West Coast titles just aren't on the same level as the better studios in terms of overall production values - camerawork, sound, editing, location, etc. - and I agree totally that there is just way too much Jack Napier. All the same, WCP seems to be the major purveyor of interracial content right now.
When Lex moved to RLD, I was hoping the Up Your Ass series would be continued over there under another name with Mike John, Erik Everhard and/or Vince Vouyer doing the camerawork. But that didn't happen, which is too bad. I hope, now that the Lex episode is behind them, that RLD regroups and puts together an all-anal, all-interracial product line. I think with Mike John, EE, and Vince, RLD has three of the best shooters and directors in the business and that this is something they could really do well. Since Up Your Ass died, there simply has not been any other serious entries into this category: all-anal with black males and white or asian females. Some of the stuff that Evasive Angles puts out has been pretty good, but much like WCP, they just don't put out the polished product that I believe the market is looking for.
To say that Lex is just another black performer is absurd, this guy is the total package as far as performance, charisma, looks. I'm sorry that his situation didn't work out. He said on his website that RLD is the #1 company so that's why he signed with them. I don't think he was thinking about the ramifications of using or favoring his kind of women as a director because he's the biggest star in the industry he probably felt RLD was just happy to have him.

At Evil Angel, the director has FULL ownership of his product. If he or she leaves, they may take their catalog with them and sell it someplace else, or they may choose to leave some or all of their titles with Evil Angel for us to continue to sell. As they actually do have full ownership and control of their product, it would be their choice.
