Hardly the case. My local smut shack told me that Red Light DVDs are their top sellers every month. Guys just want to jerk off to porn. I don't think most of us care about anything else.

Well, it's a year from the original post. I guess they still are around - I'm seeing a bunch of titles per month.

Yep,and Mark Wood and Francesca Le have helped to steady the ship now.
Juan Cuba is also doing well with Candy Shop, and so the Company is thriving and defying all predictions and inuendos. The good news is their Titles are flying off the shelves and thats how it should be.
Long Live RLD/PLATX/CANDYSHOP.

That what I read on my second favorite porn talk board. And that RLD will be putting out the bare minimum of titles and nearly everyone was fired.

Yes, PXP and Candy Shop are history. Cue theme: "Hit the Road, Jack." There's no margin on shipping 16 titles a month, is what people tell me.

Wow, I really think that Red Light District have made a bad decision here, in my opinion Candy Shop is producing consistent material than Red Light District recently.
I could see the point of Merging Red Light District and Platinum X's directorial talent base and allowing them to work under the Red Light District banner with an overall reduced output, keeping Candy Shop on a decreased film output and finishing the Amateur District label, which has not really lived up to expectations. You could have had 8 to 10 films a month instead of the 16 as the current situation entails.
Does this mean the end of the line for Juan Cuba with the company, if so someone should really buy up the rights to the Candy Shop name and lines and keep the directors doing the good work as at present.
Does anyone know how any releases we can expect before the closure takes place, how many films Red Light District wish to continue releasing a month and which directors are staying and going?

Looks like their new business model failed, forcing all the well known directors out so you could eliminate all the exclusive distribution deals they had. Thats what happens when you sell to someone who is purely a business man and doesn't have a clue about pornography.

Well, that is sad news. The word never really got out on Candy Shop. I think they had some solid titles, at the same time they were hit in miss.
PXP, lost it's edge when Stefano left and I said that more than a year back. I think whatever went down with Jewel was the final nail on those cats. I ain't puttin down the current roster, but when you are just distributing titles for directors, you fall below the radar like several companies I won't mention that struggle.
Everybody can't own everything and porn needs quality, not quantity and that's accross th board. Hopefully the market learns from this business module.

Isn't Stefano still a part of RLD?
Even if they fold up PXP and CS, I still think they'll continue to release a steady stable of strong strokeworthy porn.

basically when all the classic director's left i gave the new guys a chance but I was dissapointed I don't get why u let all your talent leave, in the whole discussion regarding RLD nobody has answered that, but for a spell and when I was 18 and first becaoming a smut hounf they made some incredible stuff

The reason the company dumped all the original directors is because those directors owned their movies, and so were taking a percentage of the profit, along with a director's fee. As more players jumped into the porn market, and as the internet started taking sales away from traditional companies, RLD was seeing a smaller piece of the pie, thus the desire to dump the director/owner model in favor of hired guns.
In other words, greed.

The problem is it did come back and bite them in the ass when they forced all of us out, as when they had all of us top people whom started at RLD/PX they sold three times the product now they have to give it away just about. They are making less money then before but when you don't care about whom you have directing or who puts it out and you think you are taking the easier cheaper route it will end up costing you big time in the end as it's already shown as fans look for their favorites by name. It's very sad as I think I had a great idea and a good thing going having exclusive directors/talent too bad I trusted people I shouldn't of. Oh well who knows maybe I'll start my own thing again and this was a tough lesson learned and now I'm smarter and stronger for it.

I've heard both sides of the RLD story while in LA recently straight from the horse's mouths so to speak.
My .02 on the matter is that all this bad blood between the directors and Dion/David/RLD boils down to poorly written contracts.
Dion pitched a great deal to some directors (a few were aspiring directors at the time) and essentially gave them a no interest loan to finance their productions for a while. The contracts defining these deals weren't either clear, understood or in some cases didn't cover all of the aspects of the business relationship. The vagaries became misunderstandings and hard feelings.
The financial plan and compensation structure was initially conceived around a wholesale price point that made sense at the time but simply couldn't work as competition drastically increased, wholesale prices dropped and cash flow suffered. It's unfortunate.
Take a look at the directors that came and went through RLD over the past few years. How many of them are better off now than they were prior to RLD? (some are, some aren't)
From an outsider's perspective (mine) some of the RLD departed learned important business lessons from their time there and at someone else's significant expense. The time at RLD was a valuable stepping stone from being a performer/director to businessman.
There's a lot of hatred for Dion. IMO some (not all) of it is misplaced. He left the company and the business model changed.
Where would some of these folks be be today without RLD?

I don't blame Dion with the PX thing it went down as soon as we moved in the RLD after Dion was long gone. The problem in my eyes you had business types instead of porn minded types in there that didn't want to deal with the top porn directors they wanted 100% control and a true pornographer does what they want not what they're told. It boiled down to others thought they could do our jobs and in the end it wasn't as easy as they thought. Everyone could of remained and made money but there was to much of a power struggle and greed.

I think what determines how gonzo product sells is the qualities of the product and not the business model.
And, to put it bluntly, juan is boring, while pete and mark are annoying.
Only John Strong is mediocre and not lame.
With these stable of directors minus one, I hope they close everything down.
Personally, I would leave on my own if I had to put these guys in my movies just because the company told me so.
The managers right now at rld have no idea what good porn is and I hope their time is up soon.

RLD and it's associated brands have valuable name recognition and a significant catalog of titles that could be used for comps, web, etc. One would think that a buyout could be in the works. I've always thought Red Light District was a pretty awesome name for a porn company. Someone has to want that, wouldn't you think?

Another comment: I've predicted something like this happening for several years now. There are just way too many gonzo companies out there putting out cookie cutter porn. Even without real numbers, it was evident that the business model couldn't be making sense for everyone. I keep an extensive wish list on AdultDVDMarketPlace.com, and when you see prices for new releases plummet for some companies within a few weeks, and you see that consistently, then it's pretty obvious what's going on.

If they wanted to avoid the cookie cutter stigma, they could have hired better directors.
They could for example hire Toni Ribas (now at Private), Jean-yves Le Castel, Skeeter Kerkove (robert hill), Tony T (anabolic) who I think they would easily move to Red Light District from their current projects and maybe keep John Strong with them.
But I have the suspicion they didn't even know these names then or they don't even care.
The product put out today has nothing to do with the Red Light District moniker as I knew it and honestly I don't know for how long more it's going to count as a selling point.

Well Like I said before I think in today's market you have to have a name as a director so the fans can identify with you. No brand name as a director your sales will suck. It's a different scene in porn and talent has shown to of been the strongest point when directing.

Yes I had an easier time getting my money and titles back as I was once an owner and put my own money into the company when it started so it was a different sort of respect level.

Is is important for people to remember that RLD and PXP were different entities? From what little I know the PXP owners and directors had different deals than the RLD guys.

From a purely business perspective which business models make more money for their owners: Vivid, Hustler, Wicked or the horsed of gonzo companies? What portion of revenues is licensing, video sales, internet, etc?
I'm not advocating that one business model or another is better or worse for the industry, just think of it in terms of profits. That's the way a company owner would look at it.

Hello ADT members, its your boy. I don't even know where to start my defense. I'm the newest addition to Red Light District. So this is new for me and I realize I have big shoes to fill. The Directors that were here before owned their own movies so there was no budget, so they could do all this crazey gonzo stuff that the people liked. As you know very well the market is now flooded with crap, making movies that cost $30k to 45k is pretty much impossible to make a profit. There for, we've toned down the craziness a bit. But this is stuff we already know cause most of us here on ADT are directly connected to the business, you know who you are! As far as Henry Black, stop being a hater! If you have a problem with who's in the product buy something else you like, problem solved. Guys like Mike John and Brandon Iron are innovators in this porn game. No matter where they go they will be successful. You two keep up the good work. Speaking of the past, Manuel Ferrera and Erik Everhard were some of the greatest performers around back then and quite frankly they still are. They both evolved to become great directors. There future's are destine for major success! Good shit!! See all these guys I've mentioned I work or worked for as talent.I've been lucky enough to perform for the best, names like Staglino, Jules Jordan, Mike Stephano Joey Silvera, John Leslie and all of them say I'm amazing performer. The compliments range from One of the Best to The Future of this porno shit. Now as far as my Directing, I'm learning, give me and the others at Red Light a chance. Oh yeah before I forget I want to send a shout out to the Puninsher, I won't say anything about your spelling cause mine isn't the greatest. But dude get a life, you sit there and watch me, I don't write about you. But you sure do observe us then go on the internet and talk crap. Where is your wife and kid when your doing this. Oh, your probably single. I'm a family man myself. Anyways Red Light isn't going any where we just got rid off the dead weight. We're like the new 4-Horsemen, Stefano, Wood, Pete, and Strong till the finish! Although things have changed we lost some future legends but we will built future ones. Good luck to the past players and the present. Jewel I remember you, what's up Vinnie too.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the current stable of players it's just not as big as it once was and when you cannot let the talent have free range it makes a huge difference in the product. We had a good thing going and it got spoiled all of us could of still been there if it weren't for greed and the stable could of gotten bigger with the addition of the current players and we would of been alright but to many chiefs and not enough indians was the biggest down fall. At one time it was the greatest company to come along in ages and it saddens me to watch it die.

And I think it hurts to put out movies with no director credit like I've seen many of the movies currently being released at PX when PX was known for being a company that let the talent direct.

Redlight is a class act.
i posted a while back about getting the same Martin Del Toro movie with two different titles.
Redlight contacted me and explained the mistake. They sent me a bunch of new DVD's with my favorite girl, Aubrey Addams. Also as a kicker, sent me an autograph picture of Aubrey, signing it to me.
Thanks Mr. Berg.

I'm not sure what the point of Mr. Pete's post was, but I hope he was saying that they are going to put out fewer titles, but with better quality. I hope that's the case.
Also, I think it would help if John Strong wasn't in every other scene. That would improve the quality right there.

I took his comments to mean that they've toned down the craziness to make more $ in the bottom line. Trouble is, that craziness is what made RLD great in the past. They were pioneers with some of the hardcore genres and people came out in droves to watch/buy.
My recommendation to RLD is to limit the # of releases but put more effort into them. If they want to compete with the likes of JJ, EE and the other EE they'll need to make things stand out a bit more. I sure hope they don't decide to make more 1 on 1 flicks cause they're cheaper. That'll really turn me off.

I think Drew said it best getting it straight from the Mare.
For me it boils down to bad business. Contracts need to be better written and people on boths sides need to be less greedy.
Do I think porn is capable if that...? Not really, but hopefully situations like these teach a lesson. I don't know if any company grew ass fast as RLD & PXP did and honestly (imho) the crumble was equally as fast.

You don't really need a big budget for gonzo.
I mean, what budget did Le Castel had when shooting the 'ass wide open' series? The man had a fetish that he wanted to shoot not a budget to spend.
If you want to shoot gonzo with an edge you must have a flair for it.
I would buy an Erik Everhard movie even if it was under the label 'you're an asshole for buying this crap' period.

If you had read all my posts on this thread, you will notice that I've been checkinng out a lot of stuff from PLATX/RLD/CANDYSHOP.
Most Importantly I have been enjoying the joints.I can't understand why all this animosity towards them.
I've been Impressed by the joints made by Le-Wood,Mr.pete and Juan Cuba and Diana Devoe from Candy Shop.
Their titles are selling very well in my neck of the Woods.
Please lets just support some good Gonzo Porn, and enough of this mudslingin.
