I am confused about some studio's release strategy and fail to understand the idea behind it.
Now, since I know that I am no marketing expert and I also know that there are some serious biz-folks around here, maybe someone is able to enlighten me.
To give a recent example:
HardX's 'Maddy' is an almost feverishly awaited release starring Maddy O'Reilly and it has been made clear since a few weeks that the 'official release' date will be January 29. Ok.
Now, today (or even yeesterday?) aebn releases 'Maddy' on their site for streaming and 'download to own', a full week prior to the previously communicated 'release date'.
Saying 'download to own', of course everybody knows what happens to licensed content that much sought after the very moment it is available in digital form on the net, be it as streaming content or as a download.
This is, of course, what happened to the 'Maddy'-download.
Now I really thought that realizing that there will be a lot of demand for a title might lead to the conclusion that a company would at least wait for the release of the DVD and a few days plus before allowing it to be published in form of a download. Wouldn't that at least add some DVD-sales to those fans *really really* waiting for it rather than offering exactly those people a chance to get the full title well ahead? And then maybe not even legally?

I don't think it would change much, the DVD would be ripped and the content put on tubesites in a few days even before the physical copy reaches some of the stores , for example I live in Europe my store put his new material around one week or ten days after its release , this for many reasons , the content is usually already available on the net.
Such stores actually survive and I enhance the word SURVIVE ,because there are those who still pay for porn or movies either renting or buying DVDs and BRDs.
the number of video stores is diminishing and there aren't new ones to replace those closing.

They've probably figured out they can capture the most money by debuting online, followed by a later DVD release, than by doing it in another combination.
Whatever the format is, it will be on torrents rapidly so I doubt that's the concern. My guess is that companies get to keep a larger portion of the sale price from an online purchase than the physical DVD (no production and warehouse costs, no distributor, no retailer fees to be removed).

Yes, I see your points. It probably does not make that much of a difference.
As an update for the example I chose, however: 'Maddy' has been pulled from the AEBN content just one day after it was up and most of the tweets advertising it as available there have been deleted by the tweeters. Maybe this case *really* was some kind of unwanted mistake.

I don't know how quickly a new dvd gets released to tube sites but I used to keep track of the uploads on a couple of torrent sites and these guys were often able to upload the dvd before my store had the movie. I suspect most studios realized that if they didn't make the movie available on their site prior to release then there were doomed to lose sales to content thief so why not make some money from paid membership.

^^ I noticed the new Riley Steele film was also taken down at its physical release date. My guess here is that distributors/sellers have a non-compete clause with the studio for some period of time.
