The development of the brain is relevant, especially the part of the brain that does impulse control.
"The greatest changes to the parts of the brain that are responsible for impulse-control, judgement, decision-making, planning, organization and involved in other functions like emotion, occur in adolescence. This area of the brain (prefrontal cortex) does not reach full maturity until around age 25!"
Thus it could be argued that people are not adults until age 25. That is probably how the Republicans picked that number.

Do you think anything will change if those people win? It'll just make them worse and more obnoxious and determined. Many of them just happen to be the same people trying to destroy porn altogether.
The reason they're such assbags in the first place is because they know they're making an impact. They'll only be bigger assholes if they make a dent.

In this case, they shouldn't be...
1. Driving. The idea that a 16 year old is fine behind the wheel of a car but an 18 year old is hopelessly overwhelmed in porn is just bizarre. But if 18 year olds shouldn't be doing porn, they shouldn't be having sex or driving, either.
2. They shouldn't be allowed to go to college until they're deemed old enough to have sex and make porn. College is a far more complicated decision with consequences that are just as far reaching and potentially devastating.
3. Anyone who can't be in a porn scene shouldn't be on a battlefield. I think everyone could agree errant impulses in a war zone could really ruin someone's life.
4. Anyone who can't be in a porn scene shouldn't be fucking their GF/BF at all. Because fucking, as it turns out, often results in pregnancy. Unwanted pregnancy, even. Should a 19 year old have a baby? What if she regrets it five years later and neglects the child (or worse)? Really, just having sex has almost as many potential consequences as doing porn. Sure. They won't have to worry about being recognized and harassed by some dirtbag with an attitude problem but if they run into some of the other problems they could have just from having sex, they are going to be just as traumatized.
5. They shouldn't be allowed to buy cars because if they can't pay the loan, it could ruin their credit.
6. They shouldn't be allowed to leave home until they're deemed old enough to be capable of functioning without impulsively self-destructing.
7. They shouldn't be working in any job. This one should speak for itself. They'll definitely regret it if they work a crappy job. And most jobs an 18 year old can get don't pay enough to justify getting out of bet at 6 every morning.
8. They shouldn't be on the internet at all. The internet is a place fraught with danger for someone who isn't capable of understanding the long-term consequences of their actions. Signing into a web site has more consequences than it might seem to. Signing up for an email account is a complicated decision with many potentially unwanted consequences. You almost need a law degree just to fully understand the user agreement for a site like Facebook or Twitter or a typical ISP. You're telling me a person who's too naive and underdeveloped to make a very simple decision with obvious consequences is perfectly capable of making the decision to practically sign their life over to a web site or an ISP? How is it that they should know they won't someday regret signing up with Facebook or Twitter? Such a decision could potentially come back to haunt someone 20 years from now. Porn isn't the only thing that never goes away once it's online. Nothing anyone does online is as simple as it seems. If they can't figure out they might regret being in a porn flick, they shouldn't be anywhere near a computer.
9. They shouldn't be buying any food at all. Everything you consume affects your health for the rest of your life. Making the wrong decision is something you'll definitely regret. Teenagers are notoriously thoughtless about what they eat and drink.
Yep. They should just wrap themselves in a cocoon or something and wait to develop.

Why doesn't it make sense? My comment was in response to the claims that some people were making that 18 is too young to perform porn, which basically translates into saying that 18 is too young to have sex. If the laws that exist in most of the world allow for people to legally have sex before the age of 18, then how can people rationally argue that it is too young of an age? Not only this, but most people have been having sex before the age of 18 ever since time began. Why would it be an issue now?
I am also aware that there is a difference between the age of consent and the age to legally perform porn. But again, that wasn't the point of my comment. There are atleast three reasons that the age to perform porn is 18, whereas the age of sexual consent is lower:
1. Ages of sexual consent vary by location. 16 may be the legal age of consent in one state, but it may be 17 or 18 in another state, which would mean that watching a video with a 16 year-old participant would be illegal in those states. To prevent this from happening, the age for porn is 18, which would make it legal in all states. For example, the age of consent in California, where most American porn is produced, is 18, which means that having sex with someone under the age of 18 in California is illegal even if it isn't for porn.
2. The age for porn is determined not by age of consent, but by age of majority, which are two different things. The age of cinsent is the age at which an individual can legally consent to sexual activity. The age of majority is the age at which the law recognizes an individual as an adult, and no longer a minor. Depending on the laws of the locality, one doesn't have to reach the age of majority to consent to sex. However, one does have to reach the age of majority to consent to performing in porn. One main reason for this is because a person cannot legally enter into a contract prior to reaching the age of majority. To perform in porn requires signing legal contracts (e.g., model releases, etc.). Since legal minors (those under the age of 18) cannot legally enter into most types of contractual agreements without parental consent (not even marriage), they're not legally able to agree to do porn.
3. Porn produced and distributed in the U.S. must adhere to 2257 statutes, which requires that all individuals performing in pornography must be legal adults, which is again set as the legal age of majority at age 18. This is also probably why other countries have set their legal ages to 18 for performing in porn. In order to have their movies legally distributed in the U.S., the participants in those movies would also have to be 18. Hypothetically, let's say that it was legal in a European country to shoot porn with models who are 16. Those movies would be legal to sell in that country, but not in the U.S. Since most foreign porn production companies do want to be able to sell their porn in the U.S. because of the huge market that exists here, then they are of course going to make sure that their movies meet the same legal requirements that they need to meet to sell them here. If they want to sell their movies in the U.S., then they have to follow what the U.S. does.

I very much doubt anyone here was saying that people shouldn't have sex if they're under the age of 18. Your 'translation' is a huge leap in logic with no basis in what anyone here has been saying. There are those in the industry itself who say that they would like to see the age raised to 21, do you really think they're advocating that 19 year olds shouldn't have sex?
The rest of your post is certainly true, and states the obvious, that 18 is the age of majority and that's why in the US that is when one can legally perform in porn. I don't really have any desire to see the age raised btw, but let's not forget that the OP was wrong from the get-go, there is no real push for the age to be raised in the US.

I guess I did. But I actually don't know what the law is on gun ownership. I know I had a shotgun when I was 12 but where I lived, that was very common. I don't know what the law was on that then, either.
Good point, though.

They may not think they are but that's how I interpret it. As far as I'm concerned, porn is just sex with an audience.
If they actually believe the age should be raised for the reasons they apparently do, then it makes no sense for them to believe 19 year olds have any business fucking at all. They have as much a right to be hypocritical as anyone. Almost everyone is on some issue or another at some point in their lives. But it IS hypocrisy.

How about lowering it to age 17. I'd have no problem with that, it would help the industry.
I think you can get a drivers license at age 16.
Did you know the age of consent is 16 for young people to have sex in many states.
Interesting chart worth checking out if you doubt me.

^I know 16 was the legal age for a girl to do porn in a certain Country but I can't remember which one. I'm tempted to say Norwegia but I could be wrong. I know they changed the law years ago so that anyone that had content made prior to that year would have to destroy it or be accused of having child pornography in his possession.
I don't think you will ever see the age of consent lowered from 18 and I wouldn't be surprised if it got increased. I know the argument that a girl who just turned 18 is no more mature than a girl who happens to be 17 and 364 days but the law is that you have to be 18.

I don't know when they made the "official" age to be 18 to perform in an adult film but I know a lot of people have entered legally at age 17 or even age 16.
Summer Rose started at age 17 and Jean Jennings as young as age 16. I saw Jean Jennings in Defiance of Good from 1974 which is pretty good and she was just over age 17, if that.

Listen up simpletons, the original poster posted an inaccurate statement when titling the thread. It is not REPUBLICANS that want to raise the porn entry age to 25, it is an asshole California politician that proposed it and happens to be a member of the Republican party, big surprise there.
One person is not representative of the entire Republican party. The OP got their nuts off by making a broad factually wrong generalization which works great if you can't think for yourself.
By the way, somebody, Original thread poster, please post the name of the politician who proposed such a thing. I read your post and you mention no one by name. I'd like to search more into it.
WHO IS THIS ALLEGED POLITICIAN????? If it is true I'd like to search more into it. I have not come across a name in all these posts of the politician unless I missed it.

Are you denying that the Republican party is anti-porn? Please show one single candidate that has defended porn, either in or out of office. Please note, I'm not saying the Democrats are pro-porn, no one can afford to be in US politics, but come on...

Indeed, there is no party line that will say they are anti-porn. There are communities where those in power are anti-porn. I can tell you the people in the area where I live vote predominantly Democrat and if you try putting an adult store in their area they would not be given a permit to open shop.
Hence I conclude Democrats are against porn.

I agree, its Location. Also the Republicans, although its just part of freedom, are more apt to EXTEND individual freedoms to the Citizens. Some want to legalize weed, and some drugs too....let the people run their own lives, thats the TRUE freedom, not Big Government involved. If we legalized prostitution, the Government would TAX it.

While certainly not all Republicans are "against porn," GOP candidates are far more likely to take such stances.
This just came out today, and features three candidates for the Republican nomination for President taking an "anti-porn" stance.

I don't think that all the Republican party is against porn but unlike most Democrats. Most elected Republicans would have no problem spending tax payer money on fighting it in one form or another while Democrats prefer to use a Don't Ask Don't Tell attitude. case in point. Has one studio or porn producer been accused since Obama has been in office? I know some might argue that the last one agains Evil Angel went really bad but I don't think that would have stopped anyone if Bush and his team were still in office.

I have a lot of questions, so I will bold key phrases, to help people scan.
It would be interesting to know Ron Paul's thoughts on this matter.
I know he's unlikely to speak about porn in public. But has he ever made public statements about issues like drinking age, or whether the government should be in the business of licensing people of any age to drive?
Has he ever spoken publicly about prostitution (which I assume he would legalize)?
I'm sure everyone agrees that child can't make a decision to do porn. That said, what SHOULD constitute sufficient maturity?
I feel comfortable with 18, but that's only because it's what I know. On reflection, I suspect that Sasha Grey might have been ready to make the decision earlier than 18, and Shelley Lubbin was clearly not ready to make a mature decision when she did porn. So while the law requires a clear line, and age can provide that clarity, it seems that age isn't the real issue.
What is the real issue? To what degree are we concerned with the emotional and psychological well-being of young people who are considering doing porn, and to what degree are we condemning pedaphilia, and don't want to feed their "perversion"?
How is this related to having sufficient maturity to VIEW porn? Lots of children have looked at Playboy, and I know that people sold me tickets to enter hardcore movie theaters when I wasn't of age. With the internet, a lot of teens (and some younger children) are exposed to hardcore porn. This doesn't strike me as a big problem, but others may see it as a real concern.

25 is too old.
I would however want the age limit raised to 20, I mean so that the girls is a bit more grown up to make good decitions on what they want to do.
Besides so many 18 year old girls have no curves, I'd rather watch milfs than barely legal newcomers.

I was looking at XXX rated magazines since around age 7 and it did not traumatize me. It made me the person I am today.
If it is legal for 16 year olds to have sex with adults in many states it should be legal to do it on film. I would vote for any candidate that proposes lowering the porn entry age.

^ I tend to disagree. Having sex and appearing in a porn movie are pretty different. If you end up regretting your choice to have (protected) sex with someone, you will have bad memories. But porn stays around forever, and could create complications for decades to come. Certain employment opportunities may be cut off, potential spouses may terminate relationships. Children and teens can also be very mean. So its not just that a person's future children might see it, but their future classmates and acquaintances might. ("Hey man, your mom's really hot" could become, "Hey man, I was whacking it to your mom last night. You should check it out." "You're such a slut," could become, "Everyone knows your Mom's a total fucking whore. Your Dad probably isn't even your real father. No wonder you're the handjob queen of Richmond High!")
Young people often don't do a good job of anticipating the results of their actions.

Valid points you make. I think the real fear is not the sex itself, after all a 16 year old having sex is no different than an 18 year old having sex. It is the emotional consequences from the aftermath of the sex.
The real fear is the massive runaway population of 16 and 17 year olds that come from families of neglect, dysfunctional, abusive GUARDIANS, where the teens try anything to get out of that situation. That means they need money to support themselves while alone and I would take a stab at it that many of these young people would be swallowed up by the adult industry to perform on film for good money.
So with that reasoning perhaps it is why the age will not be lowered. Word gets around very fast where you can make decent money, especially legally earned money.
It would also be very bad business for McDonalds.

Hah. I think labeling women under 35 as MILFs should be punishable by law [:P)]. In fact, I'd probably want to raise it even more. Current titles make no sense. I'm barely 30 and there's gorgeous women younger than me who show no sign of aging that are labeled "milf", "mature", "older". That offends me, and its probably one of the many reasons that many women are turned off by porn.

I'm of the opinion that a higher entry age would give us better porn. In fact, there's no doubt in my mind that 21 or even higher would raise the quality of porn performances quite significantly. Do I even have to argue that case?
Edit: I've been trying to make a nuanced argument about the benefits of a higher entry age. I certainly believe there are clear benefits from the point of performers, but I'm not ready to legitimize divorcing more things from the (almost) universal age limit of 18. If we start going down that road who knows what certain people might start thinking of doing when it comes to other hot button issues (women's rights, abortion, etc). But because of the stigma, and the unfortunate risks (mental and physical) for women when it comes to porn, a universal limit can easily be argued to have clear benefits. It doesn't mean its necessarily a good idea, but there are good arguments. And yes, those are good arguments only because porn has a stigma (and especially so for women), so it is kind of circular, but that is the world we are living in.

I haven't read all the posts on this topic, but I'm guessing someone already mentioned that the government raising the porn entry age to 25 wouldn't withstand a constitutional challenge. The only way I could see this legally occuring is if a porn union had an agreement with industry companies to only use talent 25 and older. Of course, no such union exists. Plus, it wouldn't apply to any company that wasn't a part of the contract. I think this topic has lost it's focus from the original subject.

I say 25 is a good age for them to enter a legally binding contract. You can even rent a car under 25. Don't criminalize it for the performers. Just don't allow them to enter contracts where others profit from them. They should only be allowed to distribute and market themselves until 25. Which would be very tricky for them to do.

So are the Republicans going to raise the age to enter military to 25 years old too?
I somehow doubt it.
So it's okay to exploit a young person's naive mind to get them to kill countless people or die for political ambitions, but not to get them to be freaky on camera?
Hypocritical stupidity.

I have mixed feelings regarding Republicans waiting until they are 25 before entering porn. On the one hand, most Republicans strike me as born to whore themselves out. On the other hand, maybe the world would be a better place if people like Karl Rove graduated from college before becoming purveyors of sleaze.
