I was just reading a bio on Bethany Benz and it said that she appeared on a VH1 Reality Show. It got me thinking about reverse crossovers from Hollywood to Porn and not the other way around. Read all the threads here on crossovers and they all went the other way from Porn to Hollywood (i.e. Sasha Grey). And when I say reverse crossover what I am specifically referring to is a woman who appeared in any mainstream moving images work such as commercials, music videos, reality TV shows, comedic / dramatic TV shows, and movies from small indie's to blockbusters and then reverse crossed over - meaning entered - into porn. Can we come up with a definitive list? Thank You!
If you make it on any level in mainstream Hollywood then you cerainly won't jeapordize that by doing porn or being associated with porn so the list is going to be tiny and probably old. I'm including a link from IAFD's RAME section that list those that have done a reverse crossover. As far as i can teel. These are people that probably chose porn later in their career and that was after they simply couldn't get hired for anything else. ^^^^^ I wasn't thinking of only people who have "made it" but of those who have not made it. An example of this would be someone who appeared on American Idol (I don't watch TV so forgive me if I'm off) and came in like 10th and upon effort determines that they have no chance at a recording career and decides to do porn. Given the advent of Reality Television, I would think the list would be longer and that it would be newer. Your point about Ms. Tequila is well noted.
Although I'm sure some exist, I can't immediately think of many. Guess you could start with the Late Marilyn Chambers. Teri Weigel is probably borderline. Chyna appears to be on her third porno film, so I think she qualifies right now anyway. Porn went through a brief (early 90's) period when they were trying to convert third-tier or bogus famous people into pornstars. Very few are ever really serious about it or able from what little I've seen.
I would have thought there would have been more. I guess if a woman did a music video and then became a pornstar (or at least gave porn a try and made a few movies) we would know about it…or would we? Oh well, whatever, nevermind.
Teri Weigel is perhaps the most famous to cross from mainstream to porn, having had some roles in B-movies and TV (most notably some episodes of Married With Children) before making a name for herself in adult. If there are any others, they must have had a very brief mainstream career before turning to porn. From Mainstream to porn in Italy has happened often in the past years , Moana Pozzi , Lilli Carati , Karin Schubert and Paola Senatore were all Mainstream actresses and not always played in B movies , Cicciolina herself was an actress and a showgirl prior to enter in porn , Milly D'abbraccio was well known either
I forgot about that. I think he played St. Peter, both in the movie and possibly on Broadway. He actually sang and played piano in one Golden Age movie. I didn't know that he had been a professional singer, and I remember being surprised at how well he sang.
So what I can see from everyone's post is that the vast majority of reverse crossovers were from performers in the early days of porn and not so much in the last 10-15 years. I think money is the main reason why you don't see a lot more reverse crossovers. If a Z celebrity can make 1000$ by making one appearance at a club then why would she accept to get fucked on film? Of course if that money dries up then she might consider doing porn but most girls find themselves a nice sugar daddy who has money so again no need to do porn.
Don't forget Stephen Geoffreys. He had a substantial porn career. I would say he is probably the most significant cross over in terms of how famous he was as a Hollywood actor. Not massively famous like Tom Cruise, no, but in the grand scheme of things and in terms of going on to porn, yes. He had lead roles, and is very much remembered and treasured as Evil Ed in Fright Night. Also, the kid from A Christmas Story. He made some porn. Also, Dustin Diamond. And, not Hollywood but you already included reality TV stars, so Stephen Daigle from Big Brother 10.
I was wondering about that myself, but I looked up her name on IMDB and all I could find for her were the porn titles she's done. Usually when they list a porn actress on IMDB they list her real name and her mainstream work along with her adult work. If Ms. St. Michaels did any mainstream work it must have been under another name that IMDB is unaware of--an unlikely prospect given how thorough they are on that site. Yeah there were definitely a few. Seem to recall Ron Jeremy almost always being involved. I know the imfamous Bobbitt was one. Hell I can't even recall his first name (John?) anymore. There was like a third-string football player who no one had heard of. Scotty Schwartz, or something like that. It was a brief phase, that unfortunately seems to be returning.
Laly is a French Reality-TV celebrity (she was in Secret story, on a major French TV network) and she then proceeded to use her newly acquired fame to star in porn movies (Dorcel) and get wide coverage by all the tabloids.
I'm surprised this didn't happen more with some of the Scream Queens of the 90s. They weren't making that much as B-level actresses and they were doing simulated porn anyway. Then to top it off pornstars came along and took their places in those Skinemax type movies. I would've loved to see Julie Strain, Glori-ann Gilbert, Monique Parent, Shannon Tweed, Tane McClure, Shannon Whirry, etc., do some porn. Some B-Girls have actually done hardcore but not for any major companies. Julie K. Smith, Monique Gabriel, and a few others have hardcore stuff out there but you have to special order it.
^I think the simplest answer is that they had so much mainstream work that they never had to. I checked IMDB and Monique Parent has over 70 titles in the 90's, Julie Strain just as many, Glori-Ann Gilbert has only a couple in the 90's but she started late and continued shooting as late as last year, Tane Mcclure has over 40 titles to her name and some of these are for a mainstream movie and a TV show and it's the same for all the other you mentioned. I think the main reason why some porn performers have taken the place of these women is that it's probably cheaper to hire a porn performer. Of course they don't really shoot all that many movies of this type so the demand is significantly smaller. The 80's and 90's were the hey days of "Z" horror/sci-fi/sexual drama(with softcore content)movies.

She starred in a number of films directed by Russ Meyers, including "Beyond the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens" which was written by film critic, Roger Ebert. These were basically softcore porn. She got noticed by some Hollywood types, and soon she was appearing topless in mainstream films: Airplane! At the same time, she did a few non-sex roles in porn. She was also touring the country as a stripper. Some of the clubs were pretty sleazy. She wouldn't protest when guys pulled down their pants and jerked off during her show. (I have witnessed this myself. In fact, it's possible ....) During an interview, Robin Byrd asked her about doing hardcore, and she said, "I'm making more money now than I would doing hardcore." So it was clear that having spent some time on porn sets-- and serving as eye candy during sex scenes-- she was ready to take the plunge if the economics favored it. Yeah, pity Kitten Natividad waited so long to go hardcore. She still is a regular attendee amongst the burlesque legends at the Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend each year in Vegas.
For me the letdown was that she started doing the hardcore stuff when she was older and past her prime. The stuff she did near the end of her short porn run wasn't pretty. But I did enjoy the softcore stuff she did earlier in her career with John Holmes joined with Uschi and Keli Stewart. They were so close to actual penetration I'm surprised John didn't just go for it. I remember seeing Paul Thomas in porn movies -- shot on film porn movies shown in actual movie theatres -- before seeing him in Jesus Christ Superstar. I recognized him immediately when I saw Jesus Christ Superstar. In a mildly interesting note, I also saw Jesus Christ Superstar at a private invitation-only event in New York before it was actually released in theatres.
The movie was not a porn one but doing a full on BJ on-screen does classify as a porn scene. She didn't do simulated fellatio to Vincent Gallo. She should have at least been nominated for an Oscar for doing that to him because the guy is not what you would call all that gook looking. I know a few other mainstream actresses have done as much or more over the years but none of them has the status that Chloe does. Mind you she was not exactly a stranger to roles involving sex on-screen. She was a main player in the "Boys Don't Cry" movie and that required her to do a little bit of lesbian interaction with Hillary Swank and then there's her more intense lesbian scene in "If These Walls Could Talk 2". Her BJ scene doesn't seem to have affected her ability to get mainstream roles but I don't think Hollywood is ready for mainstream actresses who do more than softcore to maybe midcore sex scenes. That's not to say that Hollywood is prudish because I've heard enough rumors about casting couch horor stories to make me think that they prefer to do it on the down low.
I think your definition of mainstream actress is a little too generous. She had a couple or roles in mainstream projects but none of them were starring roles nor were they of any major importance. She appeared in Cherry 1 and 2 but she did non-sex roles and these are porn movies so I'm not sure if she really classifies as a mainstream actress who did porn.
As far as I'm concerned Judy Thompson counts as a "crossover" because she's an actress who's worked for mainstream studios and then an adult studio and then back to mainstream. In the Cherry movies she didn't have full on sex but she did kiss and fondle several female porn stars and was on set and on screen when other women were having sex with each other. She took a risk with her career doing this. Kay Brandt, the director and writer of Cherry 1 & 2, wanted a trained actress to play the role of Cherry. That's why she cast Judy. Actually, Kay Brandt is a crossover too. She's not a performer, but she had a background in mainstream TV & Film and crossed over to Adult when she went to work for Girlfriends Films as a writer.
