The First Word: Freshman Fantasies is one of the best gonzo and young (18-22 years old) series out there, and this first volume demonstrates why.
Plot Synopsis: Professor Mike interviews new girls asking them to describe a fantasy of theirs that he makes happen. The format is the same throughout the series: interview, girl gets naked, girl masturbates for a bit, then the fantasy begins. Although the fantasy scenarios are scripted, the dialogue and interviews appear to be natural. Also, while most of these girls (with the exception of Lil' Mickey and Jade) have gone on to make many movies, this 1997 video has some of their earliest performances. The segment breakdown is: "Water Wench" with Jade, Lil' Mickey and Alex Sanders (three-way in the pool), "Peek-A-Boo" with Jade and Rob (seduction in the backyard), "Shag Like a Dog" with Katie Gold and Jay Ashley (submission involving a dog collar), "Assume the Position" (sex with a cop), and "2 Cocks Are Better Than One" with Wynona Winters, Rod Fontana, and Brick Majors (self explanatory).
Notable Performances: Most people key in on the girls in the three middle scenes (Dee, Katie, and Shay). Personally, I didn't really enjoy the scenes with Dee and Katie, but I can't get over how pretty Shay is (and her scene with John Decker was good). However, my favorite scenes involve the two girls that open and close this gonzo, Jade and Wynona. Jade is really cute and has that innocence you don't see in the professional girls. She's one of those fantastic "one-hit wonders" that do one video then disappear forever. Wynona, who isn't quite as gorgeous as the others, is one of those girls you'd just love to date: Great smile, no overbearing personality, and really, really energetic in bed. And, facial fans, both of those scenes end in nice facials.
Dislikes: I really didn't care for the Dee's scene. She acted dead through the first part of the scene, and I would have thought they would have gotten a better looking guy to play the neighbor she has a secret crush on.
DVD Notes: The poor video quality is the first thing I noticed. Although it's not unwatchable, there is a considerable amount of graininess and pixelization that is obvious on DVD. It's been so long since I saw this video on VHS, so I'm not sure whether it's a transfer issue or video issue. I'll just chalk it up as an early video in the series (many video series start out with rough production values and get better as the series gets more popular and the producers can afford better equipment and more post-production).
Aside from better video quality, this DVD could have used some more special features. The only value add was a small photo gallery. Without some good extras and the video quality the way it is, if you already own the VHS version, there's not much of a need to replace it with the DVD until your tape wears out.
The Last Word: Despite the DVD issues, I would recommend this disc if you've never seen a Freshman Fantasies video because it'll make you a fan of Professor Mike. I'd especially recommend it if you loved Every Man's Fetish. Not only are the girls here better looking, but the setups are less phony and irritating than EMF. Maybe then you'll see why I reviewed that DVD the way I did. Lastly, if you're a fan of the Real Sex Magazine series, I consider Freshman Fantasies to be equal in quality and value.
