The First Word: In her sophomore directorial effort, Brit Tanya Hyde dishes up a frantic and non-stop fetish-filled masterpiece, one of the best of the many Private videos I've seen.
Plot Synopsis: Looking very much like a bizarre music video and showcasing the music of Canadian techno group Audio Assembly Productions, Twisted Dreams features six, well, twisted, fantasies from the mind of Tanya Hyde. The visual style is cutting edge and experimental, using a lot of stop-motion, reduced frame rate, and color-altering effects to accompany the unorthodox camera moves, lighting, set design, and costuming. Without the ultra-hardcore content, many of the scenes would be right at home on MTV's late night lineup. Having no dialogue (except for a short narrated voiceover introduction) and no production sound, Hyde uses the techno beat and isolated moaning as the movie's audio.
Each of the six fantasies are heavily influenced by fetish clothing, such as latex, plastic, leather, stockings, leashes, chokers, corsets, and gloves. The sex acts are also on the extreme side with heavy lesbianism, shaving, anal, big dildoes, oral cumshots, male anal penetration, DPs, strap-ons, domination, humiliation, and cum play. The subject matter is controversial too, most notably the use of women dressed up as nuns in some really perverse fantasies. As a side note, causing controversies isn't new for Private--after all, they depicted a priest having sex back in the 1970s. For those of you who have seen Private films in the past, the videos in their Pirate Video Deluxe line are much more focused on alternative sex and have little (if any) plot--it's Private, but to the next level.
The first fantasy is called "Insanity" and was filmed in and around an empty swimming pool. It begins with two maids going at each other for a bit before they turn to their employer, a wheelchair bound gentleman in a tuxedo. "Nuns and Burglars" is the second scene, beginning with two young nuns masturbating and having a girl-girl encounter. Later in the scene, two burglars break into the convent and find the double-headed dildo that the nuns were using before. Just then the two nuns return and proceed to make the two burglars very happy. Scene three, "Abused Maid" has the dominant mistress of the house turning her attentions (and her strap-on dildo) to her little French maid, after which she sends her to satisfy the well-endowed man of the house. In an all-lesbian fourth fantasy, "Chauffeurs," two female drivers with a classic convertible take care of themselves before assisting their glamorous client. Then, in a common fantasy the world over, "Cops and Hooker" shows a bust in the red light district. However, the tables are turned in an unconventional way on one of the cops before it's over. Finally, the S&M is in full force with "Slave Boy Training," which along with the typical dom/sub fixtures (including riding gear and face-mounted dildoes), has the guy get fucked in the ass by one of his strap-on wielding mistresses.
Notable Performances: It's strange--even though I'm not in to S&M, I was so captivated by Twisted Dreams style and presentation that I enjoyed every scene. I guess curiosity was part of that fascination, with the other part being the knowledge that I was watching something incredibly perverted and ultra-hardcore. While everyone uses the term XXX to describe their products, Private certainly earns all three X's with Twisted Dreams. I'm sure that if this DVD impresses a guy like me who is not normally turned on by this fetish stuff, then it will probably be even better received by those who have enjoy this sort of kink.
Keeping in line with my general preference away from the leather goods and domination, my favorite scene on this DVD is the second one, "Nuns and Burglars." As irreverent as the subject matter may be, the women who play the nuns are gorgeous and the girl-girl action is destined to win awards. And, BTW, when you think nuns, don't put the image of "Mother Superior" in your head, but rather of 20-year olds that just arrived at the convent. It's just such a juxtaposition to see costumes that are associated with chastity and purity doing things that are considered neither chaste or pure. Following the lesbian introduction, the scene shifts gear to some serious anal when the burglars show up.
Dislikes: Other than acknowledging that the subject matter may not appeal to most people, I have few concerns with this video. The biggest irritation with this production is that it's a bit much to have to watch 90+ minutes worth of quick cut editing and reduced frame rate video--it's almost like watching the action under a strobe light. For those who can't stand not seeing action at full speed, you'll probably want to stay away from this one. The audio is also a bit of a disappointment. Although I agree with the musical choice, I don't like not being able to hear the actual sounds of sex. I also could have done without the echoing moaning effect that was looped over and over in the background. There's an unexpected bonus from the music-only approach though: people who complain about the language dubbing irritation that nearly all Private videos suffer from have nothing to worry, since the actors don't say a word...
DVD Notes: Wow...talk about a slick and cool looking DVD! Everything, from the menus to the movie to the extra content screams high budget. The extras include a standard-sized photo gallery with magazine quality pictures, a short behind-the-scenes video, mainstream-quality cast biographies and filmographies, film production notes, and a number of preview trailers for other Private movies. The audio and video quality are very good and present the film in the best possible light. The picture is sharp and detailed, obviously not just a transfer from a VHS source, but digitally mastered. The soundtrack is only in Dolby Stereo, but there is clear left-right separation and adequate bass. All in all, I'm extremely impressed with the DVD quality of this feature. I do wish, however, that Private would have used real Amaray keepcases instead of the hard-to-open and easily broken ones from Spain.
The Last Word: This is a must-have DVD if you're a fetish fan or are looking for something a lot more hardcore than your typical American porno. Even though there are a lot of extreme hardcore and fetish videos on the market, few can even come close to the quality and polished look of Tanya Hyde's Twisted Dreams. Private DVDs are rather expensive, but this one is really worth the extra bucks.
