my gf sometimes get cold sores around her mouth. i understand it is possible she could give me HSV-1 genital herpes through oral even when she is not showing any symptoms. i think its called assymptomatic shedding. i have been trying to find out what the risk of this happening is, but i cant find any info.

This might have some good info on the risk of getting oral herpes that way.

You know, I don't think anyone actually gives numbers for the percentage of risk. They wouldn't really know for sure unless they studied a large number of people who took the risk and reported back on the results.

This article seems to have a lot of good information. It's interesting that oral HSV1 can confer a lot of immunity to both HSV1 and HSV2 in the genital area.

It sounds unorthodox, but perhaps you should try to catch her HSV1 by kissing her, assuming you are one of the 20% of people who don't already have it.

(Usual disclaimer. I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. Warning, hot coffee is hot! etc. etc. etc.)

Unfortunately there is no medecin for herpes, just a medication that reduces the effect.

Cold sores are only transmittable til the point that they're dried in again. But until that time the risk is very high. So yes, it's wise not to touch the sores at all. That also goes for things that have been in contact with the sores, like towels and such.
