There has been a lot of discussion in the general porn forum about "rough sex", sparked in part by the release of Brandon Iron's "I LOVE IT ROUGH". To me, it's an interesting topic in the realm of actual sex, as well as in porn viewing. lindi wrote a very thoughtful piece on the subject, which can accessed by clicking here.

In the column referenced above, lindi focused primarily on various aspects of the psychological appeal of rough sex. In connection with other dialogue in this forum about the origin of sexual preferences, I also believe that there are certain largely physical elements, which vary from person to person, that also play a pivotal role in influencing the appeal (or negative appeal) of rough sex.

I’m thinking primarily here of people’s differing sensitivities to physical stimuli, and whether a particular person’s body “interprets” or “experiences” those stimuli as pleasure-filled, painful, neither, or a mixture of the two (in varying degrees). I myself have a fairly high pain threshold, and I generally find rougher sexual contact – such as having my nipples pinched and pulled hard – extremely enjoyable on a purely sensory level, all connotations of passion aside. My wife, on the other hand, has a relatively low pain threshold; for instance, sometimes she finds someone else brushing her hair to be painful. As a consequence, she has always experienced rougher sex-play as uncomfortable at best, and downright unpleasant at worst (so it’s not something that we’ve engaged in much and, even then, quite a while ago). Although my wife is perfectly willing to indulge my desire for rough nipple stimulation during gentle intercourse, rough intercourse is quite literally outside of her comfort zone.

I’m interested in hearing about other people’s experiences with “rough sex” in their personal lives, if anyone cares to share.

Sorry Bob, but the only experience I can relate is that an old girlfriend of mine was much relieved to find I wasn't rough like her previous boyfriend had been. I wasn't into 'rough' back when I was dating and nothing I've seen in porn has given me a desire to get into it. It's not that I mind seeing it when it's being enjoyed by both participants, but it does nothing for me psychologically.

As usual, I'm with Hardware on this. I've never been into rough in my personal life. In fact, my wife is more interested in exploring it than I am. I mean, we've certainly done some bandage and light dominance stuff, but nothing that would be remotely considered rough.

However, I love to see dominance and a little roughness in my porn... I don't know, something about the release of fantasy I suppose. :)

You know, we don't really have a definition of rough for this one.

In porn, I am not interested in seeing choking, heads in toilets or girls dragged on their knees by their hair. I put up with that part to see the dominance, rough thrusting, mild hair pulling, and a bit of the gagging, which is closer to my reality.

In real life, my definition of 'rough' that I'm willing to do is closer to 'passion' - dominance, rough thrusting, pulling hair (mostly as a handhold, not for pain), grabbing on, pinning each other down, minimal gagging (with me generally in full control), and bondage. It's mostly the psychological thrill, with physical intensity, not pain. There's no real discomfort in any of it.

I should probably have made clear that lindi's definition of "rough sex" sets forth the kind of rough sex to which I was referring in my original post -- and my own sexual experimentation falls somewhat shy of that actually, when it comes to pulling hair (even as a handhold, my wife's scalp is way too sensitive) and minimal gagging, which I've never done (although I might enjoy some minimal gagging and being gagged under very controlled, safe-word, purely "psycho-drama" parameters).
